Publisher's Description

Zoom Player is a robust media and DVD front-end player. It was designed to be simple at first glance while being remarkably dynamic and flexible when used to its full potential. It works in two modes: a Media mode which can play any file supported by DirectShow (any file which plays in MediaPlayer) and a DVD mode which uses pre-installed DirectShow DVD filters to play DVD content. It supersedes media player in all it's functions and provides several important functions that media player lacks. It provides special zooming functions to improve TV-output quality by eliminating overscan.

Free for Non-Commercial use.

Tried out the Free version and uninstalled just as quick. It does not support HD monitors, useless software on a 5K screen running Windows 11. Or at least I could not figure how to set it up, expected it to work out-of-the-box.

Zoomplayer is the GOD of all PC video players. It creates the gold-standard for all other video players to be benchmarked to.

Make no mistake, this is the best HTPC video player on the market, hands down. It is stable, configurable in every way imaginable and controllable from a remote using Eventghost or girder.

Ignore these nincompoops below. They are purposely decreasing the rating for some reason

Best video player ever. Nothing even comes close and I've tried all of them (including MPC-HC + VLC + GOM + KMplayer)

There a lot of videoplayers, first generation did nothing to support codecs and they were leaving you into the desert of the unknown files and codecs. The generation that we see now are more grown up and there are some suksesfull ones like KMPlayer(lot of features), GOMPlayer(lost my intrest) and offcourse Zoom Player. Zoomplayer has a nice feature to update all neccessary codecs by an install center and even not all files directly worked with this player, after some inspection & configuration it worked fast like a rock it is definitily a keeper. With skinselector (press on N with mouse on the player) you can make any color you want. Highly recommended I rate it 5*

Only one question : Why are there so many versions out there? One freeware and one shareware would be enough i guess..

I'm surprised at some of the low scores and comments. I've been using it for years and I'm really into video. Maybe it's a matter of tweaking it; there's a lot to modify.

Basically, I pretty much use FFDSHOW audio and video decoders for most video. I installed my external decoders via the latest CCCP.

I still have KMPlayer, WMP11, WMP Classic etc. but Zoom Player was the only one that allowed me to get every last thing just the way I want it. One notable thing is dual audio and subtitles. I typed "english" in Settings to allow English audio even if another language like Japanese is first. On my Control bar I can quickly toggle the Subtitles and audio if need be. Anamorphic Matroska is another thing not all players have. There's too much to mention.

I've never had a single stability issue in two years with any version and I've tried all of them.

Honestly, very few people need to purchase this, but I bought it a couple years ago and just love it. I'm happy to see that changing version numbers didn't require me to upgrade like some programs I bought in the past.

Perfect for my needs! Very configurable and stable.

If you are looking for a replacement for windows media player because it slows down your system, then you should try zoom player. I barely notice it running and it has more options than I could ever need. It may not be as user friendly as the windows software, but chances are if you've found your way here, you don't need user friendly. So what if it doesn't play dvds, get a friggin dvd player for your TV, they are like $20 these days.

A nice upgrade from the previous version of Zoom Player. With the correct CODEC's installed (try K-lite Mega Pack), it plays everything I have thrown at it. I don't have any lock-up issues on any of the five computers I've installed this new build on, as another reviewer indicated (probably an isolated issue on his computer). I especially like the CTRL-O menu that lets you alter brightness, contrast, and color balance. Many other media players do not offer that (although WMP does). Try this build, it's useful and stable.

I've been using Zoomplayer for several years. I like to use it because of its simple interface. Although the configuration is not for average users. I could not give it a 5 because it does not play some movie files (the same file plays well in VLC); its forward and backward creates long delays with some AVI files (again, VLC does not experience this). It is still a great player!

I have not been able to get decent results with my player even after constructing a DVD Graph. Sometimes it plays and crashes, other times it won't display properly. It uses what appears to be a modified filter (I believe it is Quantum) that combines both audio and video. It came with an ATI DVD player and works fine with that. My machine will not handle either WinDVD or PowerDVD either, and I get black bars using Interactual.

The Professional version is a fully working trial, so you can easily test if the DVD functions work for you.

And I'm not really sure what you mean by the drive referrence, Zoom Player works with every computer that has a DVD Drive (or even without it if you have some DVD images lying on your hard drive), as long as you have DVD Decoding filters installed. I have yet to see a system in which playback wouldn't work due to hardware. 99.9% of the time it's some driver issue or misconfiguration.

patmc7

patmc7 reviewed v3.10 Release Candidate 1 on May 28, 2003

I dislike the practice of "upgrading" by removing formerly free features such as DVD ability. Having said that, I think users need some period to evaluate the DVD function since it isn't compatible with all drives, even with custom filters.

The new features of this are pretty cool. The skin tint presets and the new icon changer style are realy good. I dont like how the Media mode thing now says "Media Video" it just sounds swcward and if i'm not mistaked it;s an audio player to. That would perhaps be cool if it had a mode seporate from Media Vidio for Audio only. In audio mode it would remove the black video window and only desplay the bottom controll panel buttons (look and work more like winamp in audio mode). An EQ for for audio files wouldent hurt either but admitidly zoom player is primarily a video player even though it can play audio files. As for the TV mode stuff it probly isnt as simple as you would think. in order for it to replace WinDVD Recorder it would have to be able to handle all the features of WinDVD Recorder such as real time encoding of diffrent vidio types (Mpeg1 VCD, Mpeg2 SVCD/DVD etc...) as well as retain the WinDVD TiVo style features of pre buffering and pausing live TV and timer recordings. I would love to see it do it as i'm the owner of a VIA Mini-Itx system (8.75" x 8.75" mobo form factor) and a 36" Gateway Destination II XGA monitor capable of 800x600 60hz witch is PERFICT for watching DVD and other vidio files but I have yet to find the all in one application to run on it. Zoom Player is the closest but not there yet.

Lots of nice fixes in this version. Most of which I never would have missed as the last RC seemed perfect for daily usage. This is the perfect player for me. I don't watch DVD's on my computer, so I don't miss that function at all.

Cirque

Cirque reviewed v3.00 Release Candidate 2 on Apr 14, 2003

Wonderful program, although I miss the DVD ability since I had the impression that Zoomplayer would be free forever at least with the included standard features. I never considered features would be removed simply to be included in a paid version since that seems to go against the spirit of staying free. Looking past that, it is a very simple to use and feature rich media player that works very well with TV-Out or multiple monitors. It seems to be lacking a couple of useful features such as the zoom in via mouse drawn selection box like in WinDVD and as mentioned by others, no TV support which is EXTREAMLY simple to do using direct show/draw? filters even in a webbrowser. As far as creating two versions and charging for one, I would MUCH rather see the free version do Media/DVD/TV just not do it with as many features. To provide the basic abilities needed to watch a dvd or movie file, but perhaps not set all sorts of diff options or features would make more sense to encourage people to spend money.

GeneralLeoFF

New features keep coming all the time and support is better than in many subscription programs. Unbelievably, it's also free!

Thanks to Blight for this GREAT piece of software, which is actually the best player in the world. Also thanks for the GREAT support he offers on his forum. And also thanks for keeping it free.

If there was 10 Stars, this program gets all 10. Fantastic on ALL media types including MPEG4 (the Micro$oft dongled version). Fro those users who have Divx and have the problem with audio dub catch up (out of sync) this program handles it and the playback is as smooth as Sade:)

Top marks for a top programe:)))))))))

It's an excelent program, more stable, less resource, yet faster and full of control which is really for me that control-freak. :D. BUT, where is the screen-capture function? All i can see so far is black-blank-picture as the result of its native screen capture. Come on.....

This is an excellent app. It's small and very fast. I also like all the options that are available. Together with winamp Classic it's all you need to listen to music and watch movies.

Well, it's a really good effort, although I don't agree with the all too positive reviews written before me. This program doesn't play divx's too well and mov's (quicktime) not at all. The supported file types I nowhere to be found, so I don't now if the support isn't just there or if it's broken. Audio support is good. Under Win98SE I use it sometimes, but I keep my copy of the DIVX Playa near me...

bobad

bobad reviewed v2.71 on Aug 10, 2002

Excellent player! I use it as my default player now for all media except MP3, for which I use Cool Player. One thing I wish Zoom Player would do is play AVI and MPG files while they are downloading. The DIVX playa does this in most cases, so I know it can be done.(bobad@charter.net)

Kessen

Kessen reviewed v2.70 Final on Jul 15, 2002

This player seems to be very stable, reliable, and doesn't have a bug as far as i have been testing it. Plus you can queue files, and the toolbar disappear in fullscreen mode a few seconds after you stop moving the mouse. Also beautiful. The quality of the movies is very good. the only drawback is that i couldn't open one divx file that must have been encoded with a rare codec; all others divx play fine.

All in all a very good replacement for wmp for all files (apart the .asx format).

Very usefull indeed! Something I would wish to see is support for remote control devices (IR Man for instance). Other than that, the shareware version of my image viewing app. gave in last week and I went searching for a new viewer. To my surprise I found that ZoomPlay can do that a** well! Wonderfull app, keep it up!

paaltio

This is simply the best media player out there, no contest. The fact alone that you can do everything with the keyboard without needing to touch the mouse at all makes it a dream come true in my books. And the proper aspect ratio support (anamorphic!) and overscan compensation possibility are just so essential for someone like me who watches movies via a video card's TV-out on a 16:9 TV that I've been desperately craving for them for years and wondering why no one had realized the need for them. Add to that the fact that it's the total antithesis to Windows Media Player in that there's no bloat anywhere to be seen -- instead everything happens lightning fast -- and there's really no other way to describe this program than saying that it's media player heaven.

I haven't spent time writing reviews before, but now I just had to, since this program is really THAT good. Great, great design and coding from the author. Such quality and robustness is very rare these days.

A very good media player. If you are running a Multiple monitor setup then this is essential! Zoomplayer is updated frequently and has never caused me any problems at all. I only wish it could handle corrupt mpg files a bit better such as Xing player used to do, with corrupt Mpg files in Zoomplayer I get a "Floating point division by zero" error. That minor niggle aside, I highly recommend Zoom Player!

now that is ALOT of fixes!! Good program, does what it says it does and it does it very well indeed! I would buy this program if it didnt need PowerDVD or alike to be installed also. It is free though and i already own PowerDVD so i cant moan! Very impressed and very pleased, well worth download. I am running Windows XP Pro and Home and have had no problem at all! (unlike with PowerDVD XP!)

It has all the features wmp6.4 has and a lot more. I have tried a lot of players out there and zoomplayer is the only one that really meet my demands. The program is totally outstanding. A player without a "popup" controlbar in fullscreen mode is worthless ZP has it and does it well.

ManiaXe

ManiaXe reviewed v2.40 Beta 2 on Jan 18, 2002

Sublime features, especially the control bar is brilliant.
Only negative item are the looks and the disability to play Real Media or Quicktime medis (probably due to legal issues).

Definitely the first, and thus far only, windows media player replacement.

Two notes:

2.20 beta 3 has a new default skin which looks far better and offers a slightly different functionality.

The 2 column right-click context menu is as-such due to the number of features it supports and the need to have it fit 640x480 (for TV-Output use with remote mouse-type devices).

I may make it optional to have it appear as one column.
