I don't mind that they try to push premium pay services, and the free version is one of the very few choices for cross-platform video calls, much less cross-platform plus 3-way. Hats off to them for that.

This is the greatest video chat software ever invented. I haven't tried the Windows version yet, but on Android this is the only app that supports the Dell Streak 5's front facing camera. The Windows software can't be much worse than the Android version and it's not that hard to add support for a front facing camera in a video chat app under Froyo or Eclair. It's just as easy as it is in Gingerbread.

Sadly disappointed with the prog. The ads (which are hideous) add insult to injury.

I used to give this 5 starts - now if I could give it zero I would but guess the lowest I can go is a 1.
What it boils down too is the ad's are ridiculous. It's such a shame too. When ooVoo first came out I thought it was the best because the streaming audio/video worked better than any other videochat program I'd ever used. Now it's just a bunch of banner ads wrapped around a program! Like what the hell ooVoo!?!?
If they ever decide to give a crap about their users - I'll be back - but until then guess it's back to skype (along with all their other users no doubt)

tons of ads
and one of the ads gave me a fake anit-virus
ooVoo is the worst of the worst!
better to use Skype
SteveJohnSteele reviewed v2.8.0.37 on Jun 23, 2010
The program itself is fair - 3 stars
HOWEVER - I would gladly give this ZERO stars
Many of the adverts are from companies that routinely lie
eg "[Google mail logo] You have a new message ..." clicking on it take user to a website (nothing to do with Google) with a competition to win an iPad
I have written a strong email to customer services
"While I appreciate your software is financed by the revenue from adverts - the least you can do, is embed advert from companies that don't lie or misrepresent themselves."
and as alexsch8 states opens a door to all manor of horrors.
I will be staying away until they either remove the adverts (for free) or clean them up.
alexsch8 reviewed v2.7.0.65 on May 16, 2010
The free version of ooVoo is actually a virus distribution system via the online ads it displays. Be warned!
We were using at the office as a trial and two laptops got hosed with fake anti-virus trojans. Yes, of course we could have patched Flash but nonetheless, why even bother exposing yourself to that.
Bala7 reviewed v2.7.0.65 on May 13, 2010
beckster,
Sorry to hear about your problems. There is good reason why skype is #1. But more importantly never, never ever test any program on your main machine, ever! Always use a VM of test-bench - you will say yourself much grief.

VictorAnderson reviewed v2.2.4.21 on Jan 25, 2010
Well - this USED to be my favorite video chat application - that is until they filled the thing with banner ads and want $ for group chats....oh well - back to Skype.
UniversityofKentucky reviewed v2.2.3.24 on Dec 2, 2009
The advertising is large and in bad taste. It really distracts from the conversation. I do like the ability to add multiple participants, but there is a fee attached. I much prefer Skype.
niknetpc reviewed v2.1.0.51 on May 18, 2009
ooVoo is degraded from first CLEAN beta release some times ago, become to adware, displaying lots of ads in GUI and conversation window, slow down your PC. Compare with Skype?? Skype is better, latest version have perfect video and sound quality, lots of features and CLEAN .
anarkhy reviewed v2.0.0.94 on Mar 4, 2009
Skype is lighter. Oovoo has a better interface though.
dekid reviewed v1.7.1.59 on Dec 24, 2008
ooVoo has not altered anything on my pc system. I also do not have a publicity bar that I have read others complaining about in other forums, nothing but a white blank rectangle, unlike my cousin who tells me she gets advertisements in Spanish, which she can't read. So I can only give this free program a 100% thumbs-up. If I give this less than a 5 rating, it is only because it does not allow for full screen resizing of windows.
Ain Soph Aur reviewed v1.7.1.59 on Nov 21, 2008

Wintings reviewed v1.7.1.41 on Aug 19, 2008
I much prefer ooVoo to Skype -- it has a better interface and allows multiple connections at the same time.
If you don't want the program to install the ooVoo toolbar, you simply need to uncheck that option when installing it. Also, it didn't "take over" my browser's start page --that remains blank as always.
Highly recommended!
Cekay reviewed v1.7.1.41 on Aug 18, 2008
As mentioned: Installs Toolsbar, changes Website, pro features have to be paid. Better get Skype, it's free!

I don't mind that they try to push premium pay services, and the free version is one of the very few choices for cross-platform video calls, much less cross-platform plus 3-way. Hats off to them for that.
However, the latest version installs toolbars and changes your home page without asking. This is a significant step in the direction of malware. Please, Oovoo, do not pimp your integrity for a deal with Yahoomever. At least ask the user's permission.
Racerbob reviewed v1.7.1.35 on Jul 31, 2008
What are you talking about Monyet ? It is free. They do have a paid version ,but the free version does not expire. And is does allow for 3 folks in a video conference at a time.

Freeware?!? ... LOL ... thats SCAM!!!
Reverb reviewed v1.6.1.12 on Jun 30, 2008
Typical scam software site. Promises of "freeware". No where on their shiny website does it say you are downloading a 30 day trial, only that if you want to upgrade to the "pro" version for advanced features (chatting with more than 3 people). I used it for chatting with one person on their PC and now I have to upgrade to the pay version. Bait and switch scams are older than vacuum tubes.
Skype isn't perfect but it CLEARLY states that PC to PC calls are free forever and you only pay for PC to phone calls.
How come all scam websites have the same shiny look?

I think it is the best video communication product on the market.

I like the user interface a lot. A great program!
gnoshi reviewed v1.5.1.96 Beta on Mar 19, 2008
This appears to be a really good program, but its key issue is a lack of encryption. While this has been touted as a feature for performance (which is in some ways a legitimate argument) it is an argument against using this rather than Skype (which is already well-established in the market).

I have been using oovoo now for just a couple of months and found it to a great program. I use it side by side with Live without problems (sorry mpis362).
I have had several video conferences and am impressed with the quality of sound and video. My latest call contained people from Mexico, Canada, Tennesse, and Michigan. Because of the reliability, ease of use, (and cost) my business has standardized on this for communication with our remote sales staff.

VictorAnderson reviewed v1.5.1.78 Beta on Feb 4, 2008
Gets a 5 from me. The audio / video is awsome, and you can have more than one person in a video chat at the same time - something lacking in almost all other apps like this.
Plus now they've got it to where you can make free USA and Canada phone calls too!
As matter of fact, about the only thing I wish for is that when you have the application open, that you could make the window narrower without having to go into the 'favorites' mode.
...Anyway - really awome job by the developers of this application - I'm acutally impressed, and as a developer myself that's pretty hard to do...haha

I have to agree - my family has not gone to ooVoo for all communication. This includes family that lives overseas and even doing work in Africa (oil). The product is the best quality and functions. What we like best is that it goes right to video (instead of IM text chatting). The problem with ooVoo is that it's too good, and will be bought up for 1/2 billion (I know Skype got more). Truly to be the best and let us see a future, it make it an open source project they the owners manage. If not - they will sell it (which I don't blame them).
eviljolly reviewed v1.1.0.1 Beta on Jul 3, 2007

I've been using this program for a while. Best thing is it's truely free. No advertising, no nothing. It works perfectly. I've even had 6 people in one conversation. And it worked perfectly we were all amazed. Keep up the excellent work.
VictorAnderson reviewed v1.0.3.73 Beta on May 30, 2007
Application works quite well. The audio and video quality are great, and thus far I haven't seen any 'show stopper' bugs.
The only reason I give it a 4 intead of a 5: You can't resize the video chat windows. This isn't the 1st video-chat program I've ran across that doesn't let you do this though.
Perhaps the author will read this and see about ploping a resize control in the video windows....
Anyway - I recommend it.
