PEWatermark embeds a hidden integer into any portable executable (EXE, DLL, SCR, etc.) for later identification and tracking. The integer is stored in numerous locations and obfuscated. While it is not impossible to remove the watermark, it requires a decent bit of effort, and knowledge of where the watermark is stored. The watermark in no way affects the operation of the executable or module.
