Interesting! Has promise. I *like* whatever third-party library he is using for his controls (they aren't Windows defaults). I don't like the default FONT though - that looks just awful. I'm sure it is adjustable, and otherwise things seemed good, though I did get some strange non-critical errors when opening some PHP files.

Seems like a great project, but needs to mature a bit. I'll keep increasing my rating as it gets better by default ;). Some give 5/5 to all F/OSS, but open source is just open source, doesn't mean it is better or worse than closed source. Anyway, for now I stay with Notepad++, but am keeping an eye on this!

UPDATE: The uninstaller needs some work. All in all, looks like a project in the early stages. Could end up a good one.

Wow! 5 Years in the making. Hate the sub-glacial development speed, but then it is already very mature so i guess that doesn't reduce it's usability or functionality. At least it is good, or rather very good. By far the best editor (not including IDEs) but it is heavy weight. Knocks spots off Notepad++, and that's saying something.

This was and still is a brilliant editor. The only issue i have with this is the speed of development which is a tad slower than continental drift. It's been about 2 years since the last major update if i recall correctly. That said this is still absolutely solid i've never had any big problems with it other than the odd plugin that is outdated.

roj: use the following to start it up: (with modifications to your specific environment) there's some issues with paint speed, but this at least cures it for me:

E:\Progs\base\Java\jdk1.7.0\bin\javaw.exe -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true -Xms64M -Xmx192M -jar "e:\progs\jedit.jar" -reuseview

Quality work as always, plugins enhance it the same way Firefox, TB etc. NIce

@Roj,

if you turn off the installed theme and just use the Windows native theme everything is fine. You're right though, if you do use any of the skin themes e.g. Metal etc, it really does slow down the repaint.

@Nighted,
Yeah, it is really unfair. And truthfully speaking i think the .Net framework is streets ahead of Java as well.
Anway for this editor if you spend some time configuring it i think you'll find it is simply head and shoulders above any of the other OS native editors out there.

Back to the review or sorts. This version seems to have a few problems updating plugins. Everyelse though seems fine.

Blah...I hate java apps. Tried this before, it's horrible! Ok if you're on Linux though, as if you really have much else to chose from.

One thing I never see is people complaining about having to install java, but all the time people b**** about .NET.

One word:

UGH!

Screen repaint speed is ridiculous.

Then again, what do you expect form Java.

Machine was a Athlon64 4400+ w/4Gb and an ATI X800 under XP SP3.

THREE stars.

Blast. The tabs plugin is broke in this version. Now i lost my most loved feature. Still good, but my tabs....(sob...)

Really is pretty good, but I miss tabs. Very much so.

(Yes, I know, plugins. Nonetheless.)

This one doesn't seem quit as snappy as the previous prev 10 version for some reason. Not really sure if this is just physcological or not thought. Still awesome though, and knocks spots of any other editor that i know of and i reckon i've used just about every one out there.

Still awesome. It's totally replaced my Ultra Edit installation. Does everything you could ever want it to and then some. My only gripe is that i still seem to get one or two plugin errors which never resolve themselves despite updates (doesn't happen in Linux), though these may be due to faulty plugins as opposed to the app.

This was just what I needed! It works incredibly well. I think jEdit is years ahead of Eclipse. Thanks so much for a wonderful multi-language, extensible IDE!

VelvetElvis, if you had a look at the plugins you would get TextTools that do sorting

anonymouscowturd

anonymouscowturd reviewed v4.3pre8 on Nov 24, 2006

Still my favourite editor by a long way. Still works brilliantly.
VelvetElvis, if you want sorting use excel! how many editors out there sort lines for you? the only one i know of is UltraEdit and feature for feature Jedit is superior in every other way. There are also loads of plugins that you can download if the numerous features don't hit the spot for you.

Its good but java? I wont argue about java so just leave it :p

If you are like me and want a small piece of software with highlightning, go for Sc1 - http://scintilla.sourcef....net/SciTEDownload.html

But that cannot be compared with this so I recommend PSPad over this. But it works and it works well so I have to give it 5 :D

VelvetElvis

VelvetElvis reviewed v4.3pre7 on Oct 7, 2006

First thing to check, does it do sorting?
Nope.
Next...

anonymouscowturd

Still as awesome as before. Easily comparable to UltraEdit. A few plugins still don't work but that's more to do with the plugins themselves rather than jEdit. Absolutely rocks especially as i can run it as a portable USB program.

Runs as fast as VI itself on my computer. My favorite text editor that does what I need it to do and much more. I use jEdit on my dual boot Windows XP / FC Linux and it's the best text editor I've ever seen. If you want a text editor, get this one.

No problems with the new version apart from a few old plugins that haven't been updated. Another very solid pre-release. You need a machine with a lot of memory for this, not because it's badly coded but just because it's java. It is without a doubt the best non-language specific editor available. This new version seems to start a bit faster as well.

jEdit is more than an editor - it is a data administration tool. With plugins, it can do just about anything. Its macros are very powerful and easy to use. The console makes it a snap to integrate other tools and run them from inside jedit, without ever leaving your keyboard. The documentation is very detailed and well-written.

There are many nice little touches that you will only discover if you explore the many options.
The keyboard configurability of jEdit is ahead of its time. The community of plugin developers who help to maintain it are a friendly lot.

Hi, this text editor is amazing. Alone it's not really better than others editor. But the power of jEdit comes with it's plugins with a little time it will do better and much than any other text editor

This is the best, most extensible editor out there; the plugins make this editor as good, if not better than some shareware editors out there. It opens huge files, and its ftp plugin works flawlessly.

This is probably the most feature rich text editor available! One of its most impressive features is the automatic plugin install. It allows you to add features to the editor with a click of a mouse! And there are so many plugins, you will definitely find what you are looking for.
Another feature to note is the Abbreviation feature.
