I ran this for a long time on my Windows box and it worked perfectly. I always bemoaned the lack of a GUI, but once I had it configured, I didn't need to change it much. Besides, GUIs have their own bugs and issues.

Are you someone who got bought by corporate advertisements?
Not as powerful and secure?
If it is not as powerul and as secure as some 30% share web server you are talking about, I wonder how such a web server gets beyond 50% share worldwide.
And just like you said 'patch up', Apache rarely release new releases these days, simply there is rarely a thing to fix, especially for 1.3 series which had stopped putting new features in. So I wonder if you know what you are talking about.
As for the server itself, it can be adminstered easily from anywhere using SSH, since configuration is just a simple text file, which also makes it easy to get search result by Goggle for specific errors or keywords while if it's GUI, it's hard to find specific setting people might have with only screen capture and different way of description for same settings.
Security sounds good, only good when it's proved without having serious flaws reported for a long while. Many of the flaws are caused by applications on top of servers but not by server software design.
And of course it runs on many OS and of course the price is free, and for anyone serious, the source code is there to check to make sure Apache isn't coded to do something nasty in the back or report the problem to developers with a patch for a quick fix than wait on phone calls from companies who keep taking you to some other place.

Not as powerful and secure as the big enterprise web servers, but if you keep on top of patches it's a reliable web server. Extremely easy to setup and works on practically every operating system. And best of all... it's free!

Apache certainly isn't the best Web Server in terms of pure performance, but it has a lot of features that make it very popular:
- it's Free Software (as in beer, and freedom)
- it has a very clean and modular architecture
- there are a lot of available modules
- it's highly portable
- it's respectful of most standards
- it's relatively easy to learn to configure it
- it is stable and well tested

Why are you raving about Apache WS? What qualifies you to say it is the 'best'..? FYI: Apache 2 is woefully inefficient, not being able to hand processes or forks at all well, and being very buggy to boot.
Indeed, the worlds most efficient and powerful webserver is actually ZEUS. Take a look at www.spec.org and see what web server is (consistently) used to benchmark production servers! I think the vast majority of people here need to engage brain.

New users of Apache have allot of trouble configuring so, it would be nice if a GOOD GUI
