  1. Review - NetMeter

    1.1.4 Beta (Aug 2, 2010)

Excellent program, but very old news...
However, the newest version is at this forum post:

  2. Review - CrystalCPUID

    4.15.5.452 (Jul 28, 2010)

Better than CPUZ, except it doesn't update CPU speed in real-time.

  3. Review - MediaCoder

    0.7.1.4488 (Aug 6, 2009)

Bundled with OpenCandy and doing a lot of hidden outbound connections.

Soon after installing, I noticed that when the main program (mediacoder.exe) is executed it makes some external connections...
After some investigations, I found it open connections to some strange hosts like 220-94.hostmonster.com, 185-131.amazon.com, some from Google and some numeric IPs.

Every time mediacoder.exe is launched, it opens Internet Explorer and a localhost page with links to different localhost ports. Looking at that, we can be sure it creates a local web server, used to connect to external hosts without the user's knowledge. That web server is possibly created using the MiniWeb thing the installer automatically installs.

Just after launching the installer, it opens connections to amazon.com hosts [You don't need to do anything for that to happen]. This is a courtesy of OpenCandy.

No, we don't need that stupidity for an open-source media coder program.

  4. Review - WinZip for Windows

    12.0 Build 8252 (Sep 10, 2008)

Five stars for their ability to stay alive for so long.

  5. Review - Lightning Download

    2.3 (Sep 6, 2008)

Go!Zilla is now identical to Lightning Download after being bought by Headlight (just different graphics).
Lightning Download is a reduce version of GetRight. It contains fewer features, but is also less expensive.

  6. Comment - Is Windows 8's app store better late than never?

    2.3 (Aug 19, 2011 - 3:01 AM)

Apps stores usually sells small programs typically made for small tasks and coded without too much efforts or for experimental apps.
What will MS sell? Sidebar gadgets or alike? Cute small games? Will those be programmed in .NET, Flash, Silverlight, HTML5 or what language?

Whatever it'll be, it will incentive closed-source software licenses but no open-source initiatives.

  7. Comment - Network admins stunned and reeling from repeated Firefox upgrades

    2.3 (Aug 16, 2011 - 4:02 PM)

Surely no one understand what I mean. Why the negatives?

Off course sys admins should be able to disable auto-update/block specific unstable updates, if they want to maintain many pcs by hand.

Software publishers should do proper testing/compatibility before releasing updates that are auto-installed.

If Mowzilla wants to release each month, having an auto-update system would help sys admins who trust on zillas.

  8. Comment - Microsoft aims to engage developers with Windows 8 blog

    2.3 (Aug 16, 2011 - 3:13 AM)

Actually Vista brought to life almost everything 7 has (underhood).

  9. Comment - Network admins stunned and reeling from repeated Firefox upgrades

    2.3 (Aug 16, 2011 - 3:11 AM)

Ideally, sys admins should not need to worry to update manually.
Soft with good update systems can update themselves without user intervention, asap.
    So do Windows Update.
    Zilla should think on that.
