I used Star Downloader for several months. It did a good job downloading files, but its limitations were irritating. File download reordering is difficult to impossible and it lacks some important options. But it is efficient.
Finally the irritants in Star convinced me to try some other download managers. I ended up with the terrific ReGet Deluxe, a complicated but highly adjustable downloader.
8.0.4.4 (Mar 1, 2006)
Popular because it's free, but the downloading hasn't changed much since version 5. Few options and it gets pretty confused on redirected download links. What has changed is the bloat and DAP's need to phone home on shutdown for some unknown, but suspicious, reason.

After a lot of searching for a good download manager, I finally tried ReGet Deluxe 4.2 (build 263). This is by far the best download manager I've tried - and I've tried a lot of them. All downloads go through a common download interface page. ReGet is very effective at figuring out what to download from redirected links. Most download managers get hopelessly confused. This one works.
There are so many options and settings that some people might not put in the learning time to use the program to it's full potential. It is possible to set up the program to handle about any preferences, but it may take a little while to figure out how to do it.
It's a power program for capable power users.
