I used to switch between IM clients non-stop for a long time, but now I'm happy to say I've decided to stick with GAIM.
It's matured to the point where it's stable, feature rich and provides a nice plugin-interface. The UI is simple and effective. Above all, it's free and cross-platform!

I agree the UI is different, but it's not bad. When I first tried the GIMP, I was familiar with Adobe Photoshop. At first I thought the GIMP sucked and even uninstalled.
Later I came back to it because I was tired of pirating photoshop and couldn't afford to buy it.
I decided to spend a little time learning the interface and I have to say that after a few months I've come to love it. Although I'm not a professional artist, I think the GIMP is excellent for people who are willing to learn.
