  1. Review - The Bat! Professional

    1.60c (Mar 28, 2002)

I've found "The Bat!" to be a decent program... Except, it's IMAP functionality is crap. It does not do IMAP using the proper IMAP standards... ie: it treats IMAP like POP, Downloading all the mail, then deleting the mail from the IMAP server (unless you tell it to leave mail on server). It also will not properly update mail on the server, ie: if you reply to a mail, it will not flag it as Replied, as other email programs with comply w/ the IMAP standard do (see: Mulbery, Eudora, OE, Outlook, and Pine). This is wrong. IMAP is supposed to leave all mail on the server, until you flag it deleted, then purge the mail. Until they fix this, unfortunately, I wont be able to use this program.

  2. Comment - Microsoft 'Laptop Hunters' ad gets changed at Apple's behest

Or.. howabout the free thing called.... BOOTCAMP. SO you can run Windows on the same hardware. If you need to game, reboot into Windows. If you need to do something else Windows related, use VMWare or Parallels on the Bootcamp partition (ie: if you MUST use Outlook for an Exchange server (though works fine in Crossover)). But, you also get 6+ hr battery life on the MacBook Pros.. the 17" is 7-8hr according to specs. My unibody 15" (1st gen unibody) gets about 5.5hrs with wifi and bluetooth enabled, with the screen at normal brightness. And, I've had to spend a lot more time fixing PCs than Macs, both hardware and OS wise. As another article I read recently, the lower the cost the equipment, the lower the quality of the parts. The sub-$300 netbooks generally are not made as sturdy as a $1000 PC laptop, etc.

  3. Comment - Three Cellular Carriers Fined Over 911

    1.60c (Sep 4, 2007 - 9:35 AM)

Well, this isnt true... if you live in an area with E911 (Enhanced 911), they can find where you are easily, not just which tower is the closest to you. A friend of mine is a manager at the local E911 Dispatch center, and has been able to track people calling 911 to within 10 feet of where they are, using the GPS chip in most current phones. To the point that the person claimed to be miles away at someone elses house, reporting a crime, to which the dispatcher said "Then why are you calling from the backyard?"(of the house they were calling about), and the guy took off running.

  4. Comment - MySpace Victim of Calif. Power Outages

    1.60c (Jul 24, 2006 - 12:55 PM)

And that, folks, is the reason you need massive battery backups and 6-10 diesel generators always spooled up, so that power outages dont do much (and yes, datacenter I have to go to does, in fact, have 7 generators, always running, with 2wks of diesel, plus contracts to truck more in in the event of a power outage lasting over 2wks)

  5. Comment - Windows Longhorn Alpha Leaks to the Web

Well, IIRC, Firewire was at least co-developed by Apple, and they own the name Firewire.

Hmm... Actually, right now 1394/iLink/Firewire is 400mbit...buuuut.... It's capable of 1.6gbit....with 1394r2 set to be capable of 3.2gbit. Again, it's the cost of the hardware that keeps manfacturers from enabling the higher speeds.
