  1. Review - ThreatFire

    4.0.0.6 (Oct 23, 2008)

If you want to waste half a day (1) watching this app "initiate", and then (2) trying to uninstall it, then by all means, Threatfire is for you. It's more like "Threat-slow-my-machine-to-a-crawl."

  2. Review - SnippetHub Lite

    0.8 (Aug 15, 2008)

Too many bugs. Most operations -- from setting fonts to exporting data -- were not working for me. There were also some problems in the tree control in that "ghost" nodes and duplicates appeared and disappeared for no apparent reason. The application finally crashed on its own. On restart, a lot of weird things continued to happen. For example, tabs appeared with control names instead of labels. There also appeared to be a memory leak or something that prevented the application from running normally again after having crashed.

This product needs a lot more internal testing and refining before being released as a beta. On the positive side -- a great interface, the ability to sort folders and notes by date of entry, and more.

    I say, keep at it.

  3. Review - Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop for Windows

    0.90 Build 1249 Beta (Jul 25, 2008)

Just to add a little bit of objectivity, installation took 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Setup for one Yahoo mail account took 1 minute and 30 seconds. I have a 1.8 GHz Intel Dual Core laptop.

The Good = Yahoo Mail for the desktop. Unlike the online version, consistent UI across all modules -- mail, calendar, tasks, notes, etc.

The Bad = Although it syncs email, it does not automatically sync your Yahoo calendar, tasks, notes, or contacts. Could not find any options for doing so either.

The Ugly = Busy busy interface, hard to find stuff, and popup error messages that make no sense.

  4. Review - Revo Uninstaller

    1.70 (Jun 17, 2008)

For beta testers and folks who like to install and try out lots of software, this is the best utility around, especially when you decide not to keep something. Getting rid of every last trace of a program is made quite simple. HI-FIVE from me.

  5. Review - Window Hidie

    Crashes on startup.

Dibs on "taking a s***" and "peeing standing up". You heard it here first. Send checks to . . .

  7. Comment - Microsoft Lists SP2 Incompatibilities

    0.2 (Aug 18, 2004 - 8:49 PM)

SP2 downloaded and installed very smoothly. No hitches or glitches. But within 24 hours, I experienced five freeze ups and one BSOD involving a Networked Attached Storage device. After an initial speed-up, Explorer windows soon after opened slowly, apps loaded slowly (especially Outlook), and video rendering software went to a crawl. After removing SP2, performance and stability returned to its original state. Not sure I can blame legacy apps or drivers. I am running a brand new Toshiba laptop with a 15.4" wide screen, built-in wireless, etc.

Test SP2 and be prepared to uninstall. If you choose to uninstall, go with a third party firewall, keep your anti-virus software up-to-date, and replace usage of MS Internet Explorer and Outlook Express with a better browser and email client (eg Mozilla, Mozilla Thunderbird).

And while I'm at it, try Open Office if you want a very nice alternative to insecurity-ridden MS Office.

  8. Comment - Microsoft to Increase XP Starter Edition Saturation

"No-thrills distribution"??? I've never heard an operating system described that way, but ... ok.
