  1. Review - Wine

    0.9.40 (Jun 30, 2007)

Marth, you have a very nice vocabulary. A decent start to an argument.

Well, it might be that you and a few others have been too engrossed in games to notice the other things Wine can do or supports.

Not all applications on Linux are free and I know it. Wine even though free is not as easy to use as CrossOver Office. There are a lot of commercial applications for Linux that I have seen and some, I use. In fact, I use IBM's Lotus Notes, which until recently was running under Wine/CrossOver Office on my desktop, now I have the Native Version of Lotus Notes for Linux.

Symantec Antivirus, which was available only for Windows, is my default Anti-Virus Program on my desktop. No it is not running under Wine, it is a Native Linux Version.

Veritas Volume Manager is also running native on my desktop to mirror volumes.

It is not that it is impossible to make money out of Linux desktops and markets, but it is tough, I agree with you there.

There is too much pressure from Microsoft not to give space or opportunity to Linux to enter market in which they have made their dominance.

If you look into any big organisation, who has Microsoft as their default or most preferred desktop vendor, looking at their deal and deal structure, you will understand what I am saying. Microsoft does not want other vendors to set foot in their market place. This might look like competition, but history (Dell/RedHat deal) has taught us that it is not the case with M$.

That is why I was saying, as a community, if we put pressure on companies making software on only one platform, they might make it for other platforms like Mac and Linux.

Google's Google-Earth and Google-Desktop are a good start, hope other companies soon follow.

  2. Review - SecureCRT

    5.2 Beta 2 (Sep 8, 2006)

Most of my work is on Unix platforms and I rarely get a chance to work on Windows. SecureCRT comes very close to Konsole. But, it has a few bugs with closing connections and tab navigation.

  3. Review - OpenOffice.org for Windows

    2.0.169 (May 15, 2006)

Having been a StarOffice user for ages(since 3.x), I have to say OpenOffice has come a long way. I love the fact that it is so much faster than before.

I will have to disagree with this person who says it is not intuitive. Within OpenOffice, to format a page, you click on Format->Page, but with MS Office, you will have to click on File->page_setup. How is this easier? Formatting a page is understandable (sane/common-sense) than File-> page setup. The OpenOffice interface is more human friendly than MS Office.

I do use MS Office on occasion, but there is really no need for me to have such a pricey, bloated, virus-ridden software on my PC/workstation.

  4. Review - Pidgin for Windows

    2.0.0 Beta 2 (Jan 27, 2006)

This version looks good. The only problem I have is that, once i installed meanwhile plugin, it does not show up in the plugins dialogue box. Wonder if they got this plugin to work with the linux version. Right now I am using windows-gaim over WINE, not fun. -GGR

  5. Review - Kyodai Mahjongg

    2006 1.0 (Jan 11, 2006)

I was hooked to this game on Linux and then saw this game on windows. I think it was version 13 or 14 back then. I was hooked to it. Awesome graphics and awesome selection of tile layout. I specifically like the memory tile layout. Congrats and thanks for such an good design & game.

  6. Comment - My problem with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

    2006 1.0 (Aug 8, 2011 - 9:27 PM)

@joewilcox: I spoke to couple of my friends who have the tab 10.1, none of them had issues. I am guessing you are not very smart or you are just a kind of person who like to mess things up and complain.

  7. Comment - My problem with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

    2006 1.0 (Aug 8, 2011 - 7:45 AM)

Yes, Apple has an advantage over Google, as they restrict the OS to only 1 device and they control the Applications and updates from their end. Yes they have physical store.

Apple is generally for people who are not very smart and non-techies, who like to connect their peripheral to a computer and be done with it. It is also for people who are rich and do not mind spending a truck load of money for each and every accessory they buy. It is also for people who like brand names more than the usage of items.

I have had the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, since they released it. I do love it. Do I think that it could be better? Yes, of course. With this device, they have messed up the connectivity to a computer, I can no longer connect to a Linux PC, like I do with my Samsung Galaxy S phone. I can connect it to my Windows PC, if I install the right drivers.

But, after using it for 1.5 months, I have found that I rarely need to connect the TAB to a computer. There is no need or requirement:
    1. it has only 16 GB, there is only so much you can copy to it.
    2. I am on wifi @ home or on the road (wifi tether), so I am always connected to the internet.
    3. If I want to play music, I use google-music. If I need to watch a movie, I use you-tube's "watch later" feature.
    4. If I am at home and I do not want to use google-music, I use my media streamer (mediatomb) to listen to music. If I really want to watch movies, which I do not, on the tab @ home, I use pogoplug streamer.

I do not care if it had the stock gingerbread GUI, but with the touchwiz update, it has gotten way better. The interface is faster and I have immediate shortcuts to couple of apps, which I did not have access to before (world clock, calculator, notepad).

The only weird button I have found with the new interface is the "screenshot" button. Not sure how often any normal home user will use it.

There are a few new applications that came with the touchwiz update: ebook, pencil note, video player, music player, media hub, social hub. Off these ebook and pencil note are very nice.

When I first got the TAB, I looked into Keis, and saw that it was for Mac users only. Guess Mac users need more hand holding than normal android users.

By the way, I have had no issues with my update or TAB. I followed the instructions, let it update at its own time and I made sure that I had a good strong wifi connection while updating.

  8. Comment - Can you give up Google?

    2006 1.0 (Apr 4, 2011 - 11:00 PM)

I am not sure what you are on about "anti-competitive behavior" by Google.
    - Have they bought another competitors?
    - Have the threatened another competing company not to make their products?
    - Have they made their APIs inaccessible by any 1 platform?
    - Does their product work better on ChromeOS than Linux/Windows/OSX?
    - Have they used their patents to push down their competition?

Snubbing a company for the sake of creating a negative feeling or to stand apart from the crowd is silly and childish.

Granted, not all their products are great: Buzz, Books, etc. But most of their products are free and help a lot of people who cannot afford to buy full products or have no idea about Open Source alternatives.

Comparing Google Docs with Zoho, I prefer some of their features. Just because Zoho is not popular and everyone has heard about Google Docs, does not mean that Google is doing anything anti-competition.

Google made its mark with 2 things for me: 1. google search and 2. Gmail. After, that Google reeled me with GV, notebook and Google Maps.

Until Google Maps came out, we had to pay so much for a good GPS based turn by turn navigation, which was ridiculous. And any mistakes on google Maps, their team are more than happy to respond and correct any errors.

I would say, use the tools which are good and try not to act silly by saying "I am going to stop using Google Products" It seems like you are asking for your 5 minutes of fame.

  9. Comment - Microsoft says Motorola's Android phones are patent infringers

    2006 1.0 (Oct 1, 2010 - 11:49 PM)

So MS crapped out on Phone market and take it out on other with this. Fantastic ....one or the other they are making money.

  10. Comment - Psystar throws the 'kitchen sink' defense at Apple

    2006 1.0 (Dec 26, 2008 - 10:16 AM)

Psystar is not well organised int its attacks, going over many unrelated items in its defense.

This should be a very interesting case. If Psystar gets points for "first sale doctrine" then there is hope for Jail-Break for iphone and other such circumventing software which frees us from the strong hold of one company.

I had a Mac for almost a year, but gave it away as it was too constricting and controlling. This is also the reason why I hate my iPod and will never get an iPhone.
