first of all it uses jabber as transport protocol. jabber is nice and not limit to icq/aim/msn only. jabber is a full featured xml router with the ability to "carry" almost everything through users. one very nice point at jabber is that your contacts are hold on the server. if you use several computers to access the internet (work/home/laptop/etc.) you could easily to this with jabber/rival combination. you can also use it from several places at the same time (currently there are some limitations with the icq/aim transports in this).
hopefully this gives you a little light why some people really like jabber :)
rival is one of the best clients for jabber servers. there are several others and not only for windows.

v3 is more flexible and more stable then v1. i offers a bunch of features and is still under development, so have a look on this really nice tool.

ViRC is a really nice IRC-Client. It's not so oversized like a Klient (6 MB) and its really ease to understand! It's great advantage is the multi-server support which i'am missing in mIRC.
