  1. Review - Pidgin for Windows

    1.3.1 (Jul 7, 2005)

I've switched to GAIM from using Trillian. I feel that Trillian has started to become bloatware. I like the simple and small size of GAIM.

The only thing that I would like to see is skins. The odd thing is that whenever I see a screenshot of GAIM posted it appears to be skinned, yet I do not know how this is possible.

Does anyone know how to skin GAIM? (Just looking at the screenshot for this build you can see this isn't what the 3 themes that come with GAIM look like)

I find that Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client are very useful. Both are much faster in performance then the Microsoft alternatives. I found that Thunderbird has the best antispam technology of anything I've tested thus far. I do not have to mark each junk mail piece as junk mail like I did with Norton Antispam. Thunderbird is an intelligent program which learns what is spam and what isn't making my time more productive! I highly recommend it and with all the added extensions and themes you can customize it the way you want! That is something Microsoft has a hard time beating.

  3. Comment - Trillian Fights Back as AOL Boots its Users

Yeah right.. please ASK?? Did you really think AOL was going to open their doors and say sure.. c'mon right in guys. No! AOL is a hog that just wants to keep all the money coming their way. The only reason they don't want their users using a different client is because they want the advertising profits. I like the comment that compared it to using a different web browser. AOL should not (IMO) make it so it's users cannot connect using other options.

I've been reading the comments here about the use of AOL's servers without their client but what about when you use a client to logon to IRC? I like the idea of having a choice about what client I want to use and not have ads thrown at me all the time. Trillian offers the ability to logon to multiple chat accounts simultanously and comes with all the features for each client. AOL will only be isolating themselves if they leave their users with few options.

Thank you for the information. I was also wondering what kind of virus protection Netscape Messenger offers in it's latest releases? With Outlook I have a security patch that blocks most of the viruses, my mcaffee scans all of Outlook email so it catches these anyways. I don't know if it will scan Netscape email though. I'm using Virus Scan 5.1 with the latest definitions. I'm also running this on Windows ME upgraded from Windows 98. So far I haven't caught a virus using Outlook.

Okay, maybe this is just me but every time I try and use Netscape software, be it mozilla or navigator it crashes almost every time I use it! I just downloaded the latest mozilla release and the first time I used it, it crashed. You could say that I should try using the more stable release from Netscape's site but I have done this and all of the newest releases crash from there too. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the same results. If this isn't just me then I think that Netscape better shape up or give up! At this time IE is running a lot more stable.

  7. Comment - McVeigh Death Broadcast Still Fighting

This topic was about whether this should be broadcasted via the internet.. not whether or not he should be executed! Read the last line. "What do you think about the live broadcast of an execution? Sound off in our forums... "

Now, with that said, it will be impossible for them to broadcast this, it is illegal. Everyone that enters the execution viewing will be checked for any type of camera, cell phone, video camera, microphone, tape recorder etc.. which are all prohibited.
