I've been using all kinds of VNC clones since ages. They improve every so often. TightVNC was a big improvement in terms of security and speed. I recommend it, although if you need remote control on the Windows platform try out UltraVNC. Since VNC communicates over a single port, it can be used from behind a firewall with good qualities, which is not as easy with Microsoft's built-in Remote Desktop. Authentication and session encryption vary between clones, but I would definitely vote for one of these VNC clones.
