This is definately the file manager with the most configurable options. I it so many options, that I keep changing the settings over and over again. And that is the part were the program fails, you have to use it a lot to be able to remember how you configured things. The past versions I tried were rather unstable, but version 8 has never crashed on me in the past few months I've used it. I give it five stars becuase the program simply rules. But I still do prefer Magallan Explorer or Windows Commander for daily use ...
1.0 RC2 (Apr 18, 2006)
This program is awesome for playing and searching in a large MP3 collection. I actually dropped Winamp for this player. It starts up amazingly fast. It builds a database of your MP3s and its most important tags. Search for music by partially typing the name of the artist or album, or if you want, a partial name of the song. Then you can play the file instantly.
I have tried Mediamonkey in the past, but its main problem was that it didn't work that well with updates on files and tags that were made outside the program, even with its filemonitor activated. This program rescans your MP3 collection in no time without too much CPU usage or memory overhead.
Yes, it still is a release candidate, and yes, it has a few bugs. But even with its shortcomings, this is the best mp3 manager in years!
3.0 Beta 5 (2.99.5.12181) (Dec 28, 2005)
I'm using locate on Unix, so I had high expectations of this freeware Windows port. Unfortunately, it crashed in a few seconds on my Windows XP system. If you want a superior and stable alternative try Filetracer 1.2 (shareware).
Note that tools like Google desktop search or Copernic do not index ALL files on your system, like locate and Filetracer do.
Guess I'll give this program a chance again in a year or so ...

I've been using this software for at least a year or so, and never felt the need for alternatives. It's free, uses low resources, has no annoying popups, spyware or whatever.
You need to train K9, but then it works! And the side effect, the number of spam I receive on a daily basis has dropped substantially. It would be cool if it could also check hotmail and some other web based mail accounts, but, everything in there is spam anyway, need no filter for that :-)

If you are a more experienced Windows user, you know that the Windows Explorer is total crap for extensive file management. So you use a 2-pane file manager instead. The most well know is Total Commander, but if you are looking for a worthy alternative, this is the one. It is better looking and better configurable and has all the common features needed for daily file management. I started using this software when it was still called Enriva explorer because it was the first file manager to handle file descriptions properly and it was able to show transfer rates. I like that! Since then the software has evolved and is quite stable now. It does crash occasionally, but if you can reproduce it, report it and it is likely to be fixed in the next version.
