  1. Review - Loudtalks

    0.9.0.32 (Dec 3, 2007)

Now this is neat! Push to talk for the PC.

I downloaded this earlier today, then convinced another coupe of friends to do so too.

    First impression? Very pleased.

Not only is it a ridiculously small, but it works. And works well.

The audio quality is pretty good and I particularly liked the 'channel' function - whereby groups of people can be lumped in together for simultaneous broadcast. Thats a simple, but very effective feature.

I just hope it manages to avoid becoming bloatware as the most impressive thing for me overall was the small file size.

Why can't everything be as simple as this?

    Well worth a 5/5.

  2. Review - ATI Tray Tools

    1.3.6.1058 Beta (Oct 16, 2007)

    Hmm.

Much as I usually like ATI tools, this time it bombed.

    BSOD the instant it started.

  3. Review - SeaMonkey for Windows

    1.1.3 (Jul 20, 2007)

As a long time (and happy) Opera user, I really wasn't expecting anything to come close.

I'm surprised - as a first time users - to be saying that SeaMonkey matches and, in some respects, beats Opera.

Yes, I know they are both Mozilla based, so should be approximately the same in operations/speed, but as I say, there are some factors making me like SeaMonkey a little more - such as the plugin architecture.

It would be nice, as others have mentioned, if there were more plugins available, but hey ho you can't have it all I suppose.

I recommend at least giving it a whirl - it's certainly nowhere near as bad as IE, easily matches Opera and, as I said, in some ways exceeds Opera.

  4. Review - ImgBurn

    2.1.0.0 (Sep 12, 2006)

Ravemanson - I see you learned the art of being polite at school, didn't you?

Is it any wonder that more people don't offer their subjective opinion of new (or revamped) stuff when characters like yourself immediately pounce upon them and attempt to rip them to shreds?

You've just made yourself look like a complete twat.

Not everyone can afford/be bothered/need the likes of Nero and it's associated bloat to get the job of burning an image done.

This is one of these extremely useful little utils for such people. It does the job and does it well. UNLIKE Nero which has recently suffered from a whole clutch of bugs.

  5. Review - AVS TV Box

    1.3.4.34 Beta (Aug 24, 2006)

For a freebie, this is actually quite neat. Certainly better than the Hauppage DVB-T software for viewing Freeview, which is a complete mess and a nightmare to use.

My only quibble with this one is that it's fiddly to scan and load in channels - the documentation, while nice, doesn't actually go far enough. It took go a good quarter hour to work out why I was viewing my webcam even though I was selecting Freeview channels to watch.

Actually, it wasn;t my only quibble - heres another: It would be nice if there was a simple 'Freeview' selection button for scanning for channels - not everyone knows which 'network' they should be choosing - spending up to half an hour going through every network option scanning for channels is a real pain.

Despite the gripes, this is a neat looking little bit of software. Could be better, but i can't grumble about something thats free.

  6. Comment - Gates Foundation and BBC distribute free condom ringtone

    1.3.4.34 Beta (Aug 16, 2008 - 5:44 PM)

    Stop homosexual activity?

What planet are you living on? The vast majority of HIV cases are present within the heterosexual population - the vast majority of whom are NOT drug users.

Oh and of course, heterosexuals always wear condoms except when breeding, don't they?

And let's not touch at all on the wildly rising numbers of sexually transmitted infections amongst the heterosexual population either.

The sad truth (as you put it) is that being homosexual is NOT a destructive lifestyle, nor is becoming HIV positive an eventual outcome for being so. To assume so shows nothing but your ignorance.

A fact worth remembering is that it wasn't that long ago that we - in the so-called civilised countries - were embarrassed by and avoided discussion of condoms. Anything that helps and encourages the discussion of condoms, in countries or populations not yet comfortable with them as a discussion topic should be applauded - however laughable we may find the method.

To say that some of the comments on this article disgust me would be the understatement of the year. Although it doesn't surprise me one tiny bit that there are so many bigoted twats in 2008, I just didn't expect to find them on here.

  7. Comment - Symantec acquires 'cloud' storage company, charges buckets

    How much?

    They've got to be joking.

  8. Comment - It's official: iPhone goes 3G for $199

    1.3.4.34 Beta (Jun 9, 2008 - 4:00 PM)

I wondered that too (about the iPod Touch).

  9. Comment - DRM is added to Flash with new rights management server

    1.3.4.34 Beta (Mar 19, 2008 - 2:38 PM)

Obviously not everyone else is looking to get away from DRM, otherwise Adobe wouldn't be rushing in. They are providing a service for those that may want to utilise the service.

As mentioned in the article, the content providers - such as private companies recording digital footage of private meetings, for example, are looking to find a way to track 'leaks' of their content on sites such as YouTube - Fair do's to them.

I doubt, given the groundswell of opinion opposed to it, whether it'll be as successful as they may hope for - especially in relation to the movie studios - but no-one can argue with Adobe making the service available for those that want it.

Any arguments against DRM should be with the content providers still trying to inflict DRM on us, in one form or another, on the products we purchase/rent.

Adobe is merely selling the mechanism for them to do it, if they so choose.

  10. Comment - That's the ballgame: Toshiba bows out of HD DVD

    1.3.4.34 Beta (Feb 19, 2008 - 6:47 PM)

Sorry Homer thought I was you, or you me.

    *sigh*

Life as me isn't so bad. Honest.

    :@)
