In my opinion this is the best AV package (free or not) available. It is slim, fast, effective and not cluttered with useless features

This is more than just a firewall, but the firewalling component in itself is the most robust technology of all available firewalls: OpenBSD's PF
Besides the ability to do inbound and outbound stateful packet filtering *per application* it can also be used to block access to registry keys and values and file system objects. It is very comprehensive and it is free although it is still in early beta it beats everyother package I've seen and with Tiny gone its the only real option if you want effective security for free.

bloated, suitable for inexperienced users, highly popular but severely impaired. More modern personal firewalls are more effective and require less bloat.

Symantec announced that Sygate is no longer supported. That is sad considering that Sygate kicked Norton Firewall's A** but then again I guess technical excellence will always be secondary to money.
