  1. Review - Gene6 FTP Server

    3.9.0.2 (May 18, 2007)

Gene6 has lots of nice features that I really like, such as how easy it is to setup virtual directories, and the security stuff is great. The functionality is a pretty big step up from their old Bulletproof.

However, the one thing I HATE about Gene6 is its GUI. I think going with the tree structure to access EVERYTHING was a horrible idea. They lost so much great GUI functionality compared to Bulletproof, like tracking users, banning users, checking stats, etc. (Gene6 can still do this stuff, but it just feels so clumsy.)

  2. Review - Microsoft Windows Defender (32-bit)

    1.1.1347 Beta 2 (May 8, 2006)

Why is it that you have the option to do a custom install, choose NOT to install the Windows Defender component, but can then continue the installation anyway?

When the Defender service is stopped and you try to start the GUI, why don't they have it restart the service for you instead of giving an odd error?

When you close the GUI, why does it keep running?

I'm thinking MS AntiSpyware (Beta 1) was better.

  3. Review - Easy Macro Recorder

    2.1 (Mar 3, 2006)

This software will record mouse movements, but it sure is buggy. The timing on the mouse movements isn't quite realtime. Normal speed settings go a bit faster than originally programmed. When you tell it to run a macro more than once, it can sometimes go on the fritz and execute them as fast as possible, which can really mess up the program you are trying to use the macro on.

  4. Review - FileZilla v2

    2.2.18 (Feb 14, 2006)

Yes, Filezilla is free, so there's you a couple of stars. Yes it seems to be a very stable program, but I've had endless problems with it screwing up transfers. A lot of times when I'm trying to download a file, it creates it on my local drive (0 byte file), then notices that, hey there's a 0 byte file, want to overwrite it? OK overwrite, but there's already a file, overwrite again? OK, but the file, der, I already tried too many times, you'll need to reset the transfer. Grrr.

Then when I upload a file and overwrite it, it will try, but sometimes it only overwrites part of the file, so I get a screwed up mixed file.

Also, there's nothin quite like transferring a huge file, having it screw up half way through, then not being able to resume because it messed up the file.

I've tried Filezilla on several different machines on several different networks with several different FTP servers, and always some sort of goofy problem.

  5. Review - AutoPatcher XP

    4.5 March (Apr 14, 2004)

This is a VERY handly tool to have, especially when doing computer maintenance and repair. It saves a lot of time when upgrading and I love the fact that it comes with a patch for uxtheme.dll. I only have one small problem with it, which I have had happen at least twice. After selecting the specific packages I want to install, it will sometimes just install everything, even if I didn't tell it to.
