Four out of five because 4NT is not Take Command. Excellent replacement for the default command shell. Highly recommended (Take Command even moreso) if you often find yourself performing command line administration.

T3chDad - You win the clueless award hands down. Some sourceforge project adds multiple tabs, transparency, and the ability to select/copy to cmd and it's the 4NT show-stopper? Stop typing, you're embarrassing yourself. $70.00 is cheap for something this good and useful. Using it allows so many possibilities that cmd never could come close to. It makes life easier when running admin scripts, etc. I wish all apps were this well done and documented.

Dougau: It will work with Vista.Back in the day of DOS, it was the first shareware I bought. 4DOS is now a freebie - but except for Virtual Machines nobody uses it now. There used to be a version called 4OS2. I have only used !% of its commands (does Powershell have built in FTP for example?) but if I have a few hours to spare I might master 2% of its capabilities.

I've been using 4NT since 1989 (back when it was just 4DOS). If you are working with MS operating systems and want a superset of the traditional command prompt, but with the level of functionality you can get with the various Unix shells, then 4NT is perfect. It's a little pricey, but a product doesn't survive for almost 20 years in this industry unless it's actually worth something (or its creator is a monopoly).

Been using 4DOS and 4NT since the old days, always loved it. I moved to Linux a few years ago, so only get a chance to use 4nt on rare occasions.

While Linux has other, more powerful shells, I still miss some 4nt features (like the popups for history and the select command, for instance).

I've used 4DOS, 4NT and TakeCommand from the early days - even got an old employer to buy a site license for our development group because of the benefits/time savings it allowed.
Great programs - however, like others, it's high upgrade price eventually deterred me from sticking with it. Still haven't found a comparable "SELECT" command for cmd.exe. Miss that and it's powerful aliases.

dhry - instead of trolling, why not try managing multiple PCs or doing other serious work with a GUI. Gets a bit tedious. GUIs are great tools too, but have their limits. Command-line interpreters are powerful tools in many situations and those that understand that appreciate them.

It's the hubris of youth - that you are "obviously superior" merely by going with the style du jour - that will only earn you scorn and dismissal by older, more experienced people in this forum and elsewhere. And think - you too will have to face someone who's "new idea" makes your GUI "obsolete". Be smart - know your tools, use them appropriately, and treat others with respect.

Ppl who call this app old and outdated and no better than cmd.exe are typing blind. Totally ignorant what it can do for you if you've the need for it. 4NT is a dream to use for setting up advanced admin scripts, etc. But it IS a bit overpriced.

I have been with 4DOS since version 4.0, 4OS2 from 1.1 and 4NT from 2.5. I still use them quite heavily.

Like many of the proggies that came through OS/2, there are lots of interesting extras. 4NT for example, supports REXX commands, and also the wonderful EXTPROC (ie the OS/2 verion of unix /#).

It is meant to be compatible with command.com and cmd.exe, and apes many of their bugs as well. On the other hand, it is meant to add lots of usable functionality, replacing a horde of utilities in a neat compatible package.

Note that the windows command line is no more DOS than the windows shell is. cmd.exe is a win32 proggie, complete with registry access etc. It is not "DOS" by any means.

Sorry folks, but DOS is DEAD. If you want a command line, run Linux.
Edit: Okay, for those of you who completely aren't following. When you read the word "DOS" above, please consider that what I am actually referring to is the concept of typing commands next to a greater-than sign. I'll rephrase. "Typing commands next to a greater-than sign is DEAD. If you want to type commands next to a greater-than sign, run Linux."

I've been using 4DOS/4NT since the 1.0.
I last bought 4NT v4.00a.
Since then the list of updates and the very high upgrade price gave me very little reason to pay for an upgrade. (Plus, I rarely use Windows now days, making it less useful to me.)

Good to see that 4NT is alive, though...

Pay money for this? Yeah right. You can do all these things with other utilities, for free. They even have this as one of their features on their site: "Change the drive and directory in a single command. Extended directory searches allow you to change to a directory anywhere on your system by entering only part of its name." Anyone possessing a basic amount of Windows knowledge can tell you how to do this in the built-in command prompt.

I have used this for so long I can not remember being without it.

If you still use the command line (and if you don't you really should, somethings are accomplished so much easier via the command line) this is the best $75 you can spend.

Scary.....back in the day I ran a 3-line BBS under DOS v6.+, QEMM & Desqview, using 4DOS on a very early 486. 4DOS was king, and so is 4NT......if you could possibly still need it?

OMG!! It still exists?! I remember using 4DOS back in the days and it was absolutely awesome. I use the command prompt extensively for various tasks, batch files, scripts, etc. I'll definitely be looking at 4NT...

4NT is an absolute life saver for anyone who needs to run maintenance / backup/ etc batch files on win machines from batch-like files. It makes cmd look like the ugly dog it's always been in comparison. This in conjunction with WinRAR's command line abilities make backups actually fun. MS will soon release Microsoft Shell to make it comparable with what UNIX has had available to it for many years. Until then or even along side MSH, 4NT is powerful stuff if you have the specific need.

OMFG is this app still in use *wipes tears out of eyes* :) Used this around 1990 when DOS was the OS. Obviously .NET is the way to go today but I guess some still need this or have old code still in use.

I used 4DOS and 4OS2 absolutely positively 100% of the time years ago. I had no idea that JP was still going, though! An initial glancing at this appears that it has the same absolute gamut of wonderful features, and extremely high quality of product that I expected years and years ago, although I really don't have much use for it anymore, as Windows has improved to the point where it's almost a useful system :D

For command processors, I don't think there's anything better than JP software's. I wonder if they've made a Unix shell yet?

I used 4Dos a lot back in the day, that was... woah, some ten years ago ! It made the command line a whole different world, a much more friendly one.

I discovered through it that a .bat file was not forced to be just a 3 lines batch file : It allowed me to do real little programms, hundreds of lines of it !

I always though that one of my first salaries would be used to purchase it, then I took a close look : 70$?!? for a command line add-on ? Without me pals... I'm no big company, and the command line enhancements in NT/2k's CMD, through their maths & string manipulations functions are good enough for me.

I'm a 4dos user since old 80286 times: 4dos is still available for Win98-ME users, and JPSoft developed 4NT for Win2000-NT-XP users. A software you absolutely can't miss if you still use for any reason the commandline.
