I've been using Winamp since 1997. It's still the best player out there!

I did start using iTunes for a couple of years, since I bought myself an iPod... but now that Winamp supports iPod syncing - I'm using it again :)

Thank god AOL haven't destroyed it... and hopefully it will stay that way.

Over 10 years and still the best! Its gone from a basic media player to a fully featured replacement for iTunes. They haven't left the barebones users behind though, during installation you can choose to install nothing but the basics. My install with visualization, MP3 player support, media library, is only 22mb on disk and uses less than 4mb of memory while playing music. To those that say Winamp is bloated I think you need to take a closer look. Just because it's reached version 5, full of features, and owned by AOL doesn't mean its worse than back in the day.

Considering it's age Winamp is still a great media player. Probably the only thing AOL didn't butcher.

The downloads have doubled since the 2.9x days but it still runs pretty swiftly on my AMD 1.3ghz laptop with 736MB of RAM, with the Bento skin off. Slightly slower startup with it on. Considering that WMP and iTunes are way larger in download size, this is still a nice lean familiar player.

It also plays some videos that WMP tends to whine it can't play.

Let's not forget the plethora of plugins (yes and there are many that are just plain worthless!) to customize it ANY way you want

Add ml_ipod (or the built-in plugin) and it makes it a great all around program to play media and manage your library or digital music player.

For me this is nearly perfect. It's gotten very good with video and I rarely find myself needing to use VLC any more.

And it still uses a tiny amount of RAM in classic mode.

If this used its own built-in codecs (VLC, Foobar) and had dvd playback, this would be the ultimate. It is still a 5/5
