GFI MailEssentials for Exchange/SMTP 12 Build 20080326

Publisher's Description:

GFI MailEssentials for Exchange/SMTP is a server based anti spam & email management solution for Microsoft Exchange Server & Notes/SMTP servers. Spam is caught before the mail server, no need to deploy client software. Its advanced Spam detection technology is based on: Content checking of body and subject for spam keywords, checking mail headers for typical spam practices, and checking if the sending mail server is on a third party black list such as ORDB. Admins can also set-up their own blacklists, as well as reduce false positives using the automatic whitelist feature.

Latest Changes:

  • UPDATE: On a clean install, DNS Blacklist is enabled by default
  • UPDATE: Perimeter servers automatically discovered and configured upon installing
  • UPDATE: Email from local domains are now being processed when moved to Bayesian folders
  • FIXED: Local domains detected by installation are not written to the configuration
  • FIXED: DNS Blacklist and IP Whitelist fail to detect correct perimeter if email passes through multiple perimeters
  • FIXED: Issue in mail monitoring caused during lookup of group names
  • FIXED: Keyword checking treating certain international characters as white-space delimiters
  • FIXED: Constructed URL of mailbox to get HAM/SPAM is not editable when running Bayesian Analysis Wizard
  • FIXED: When license limit is reached the 2nd time, no email notification is sent

I've been reviewing spam filters for our organization and I cannot believe the comments below. Of course it is nice that it has great antimalware capabilities but it does a really poor job on blocking spam! Out of the box it is horrible and I refuse to explain why the need to train the filter continuously. A Bayesian filter is kind of useless nowadays because of Bayesian poisoning and other spam tricks. Look further if you need a out of the box solution that doesn't stress your server CPU.

Great software! I'm using it on Exchange Server 2003 about 2 years and I'm realy satisfied. Together with GFI MailSecurity (with Kaspersky plugin) make strong security suite.

This software changed my life. I was suicidal, and it set me free. It made me see the light. It made me find God.

Today, I can do nothing but sing the praises of this, the finest software ever devised, nay, conceived. And we all owe the fine folks at BetaNews a hearty round of applause for featuring it.

* False praise offered because if you rate a featured item below a 4, your comment will be quickly deleted.

We use this on our X-change 2003 server. It is the bomb. Unfortunately our email domain’s has been around so long that we are on every cotton picking spam list there is. When we first installed GFI we were receiving about four to five thousand emails a day for thirty five people, with only a thousand emails being valid. We didn’t want to get rid of emails because for our business we have to receive unsolicited emails. GFI allows us to set up a junk email folder on all thirty five clients no matter which version of MS Outlook they are running. My users are happy!!! I came out smelling like a rose! The only drawback is when you first install it. You will have to train the filter for at least the first thirty days. Through the use of white list, black list, and training the Bayesian filter. We installed at version 9 and I had to admin it. GFI is at version 10.1. The new version allows you to have your users add items to the white list, black list, and Bayesian filter. The best additions to version 10.1 is the Directory Harvesting check, and the Sender Policy Framework support.
