Pixelformer is a bitmap graphics editor, specifically optimized for creating and modifying small-sized images, such as icons, avatars, buttons, etc. It does not restrict you with a limited tool set specific to classic icon editors. Using Pixelformer, you can work with images of any size and with files of different types (including BMP, PNG, PSD, TGA, JPEG, ICO, and CUR files, as well as EXE, DLL, or ICL), use semi-transparent colors, compose your icons with multiple layers, make smooth antialiased images using the power of supersampling, dynamically generate highly optimized palettes, and save the results in a desired format. It also includes a PNG optimizer which losslessly minimizes size of PNG files and Vista icons.

    DudeBoyz,

You've missed the point. As the description says, the application is "specifically optimized for creating and modifying SMALL-SIZED images". For these sizes it is really great (at least much more promizing than any other icon editor).

And, if an icon editor is able to open and modify large images without crashing or freesing - it is rather advantage, not a drawback. Isn't it?

I guess it's nice that it's free, but it really isn't that good at what it does.

If it was specialized to work AS AN ICON EDITOR, that would probably be fine. But because it is trying to branch out into larger bitmap editing, it ends up feeling like an unsuccessful hybrid.

The icon editing is compromised (less efficient, less effective, less intuitive) due to the lack of dedicated icon-only tools in the interface.

The bitmap editing is an afterthought, and all it seems to do (at least for me) is confuse the issue and distract from what it could be if it was a single-use app.

It's not absolutely horrible, but it's not that great, so I guess a rating of 3 will do the trick.

    No bugs fixed.
    Very pleasant GUI.
