  1. Review - MediaInfo

    0.7.44 (May 31, 2011)

Some of the Chicken Little's here really need to do a little research. OpenCandy is not classified as malware (malicious software). It is considered adware.

From ESET: "A potentially unwanted application is a program that contains adware, installs toolbars or has other unclear objectives. There are some situations where a user may feel that the benefits of a potentially unwanted application outweigh the risks. For this reason, ESET assigns them a lower-risk category than other types of malicious software, such as trojan horses or worms."

All you have to do to avoid it is download the zip version. That they use OpenCandy may be annoying, but they clearly state that they use it on the program's home page. Following the "We use OpenCandy" link, leads to an F.A.Q. that includes an explanation of what it is, as well as a link to the zip version should you not want to install OpenCandy.

Not so hard, is it? Although I guess it's much more fun to throw reason to the wind and respond with "OMG!! Malware, n00bs! ROFL!".

MediaInfo itself is an excellent source of info for just about any type of media file you have on your system. The GUI is OK, could be streamlined a bit.

  2. Review - DefenseWall HIPS

    3.07 (Oct 10, 2010)

DefenseWall offers solid protection, and unlike classic HIPS (Malware Defender, ProSecurity, etc) you don't have to be very computer savvy to run it.. Well, maybe a bit more savvy than healer4u. "...turn off your CPU"?
Some users rely on it for their only defense (no AV). I wouldn't suggest that for less experienced users, but in the right hands, and with some common sense, DW can be enough to keep you safe.
Also, the support from the developer is incredible. Almost fanatical.

  4. Review - FastStone MaxView

    2.3 (Dec 7, 2008)

My favorite image viewer. Fast and light. A good replacement for Windows Picture Viewer. I especially like the editing feature that allows me to open the displayed image in FSViewer (still free) or Photoshop.

I hope they revert back to freeware, but they haven't in the case of FSCapture.
In the mean time, you can still get v 2.2 over at File Hippo, or v 2.1 at Brothersoft (choose the second link that downloads directly from FastStone).
I wasn't sure if it was OK to post the links or not. Just Google for FastStone Maxview version 2.2 or 2.1.

Incidentally, why take off points for File Forum's mistake? The FastStone site clearly marks this as shareware.
