Publisher's Description

Bart's PE Builder helps you build a bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 very suitable for PC maintenance tasks. It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on.

I'm sure it's terrific, but the Getting Started instructions need to be re-written for Newbies like me.

After inserting my original Windows XP Installation CD in the drive, and then clicking 'Yes' to start the search... PE Builder then starts its search.

From here, at no time is there a message saying remove my installation disc and replace it with a blank CD in the drive for BartPE to burn to.

I have used Bartpe since Bart gave free from the first edition to now and its the best program that I have used and I am still using and adding programs to it even now whilst looking for plugins I saw this forum and had to join to say how great this program is.

This is an awesome program, who would think you could boot windows xp from a cd, and then be able to run customized programs, that execute directly from the cd. This can be an extremely usefull program, and it's actually not as complicated as it seems. You can even connect to the internet with firefox, it's just crazy, got to love it. This is a must have program for people in the IT business, great for recovering personal files, moving files, or cleaning nasty spyware or viruses. 5 out of 5 in my opinion.

THis program is absolutely a MUST HAVE for any administrator. You can remove viruses and adware from outside the normal os, burn cd's, repair partitions... the possibilities go on and one. For the person that asked, yes, Nero greater than 5.5 will work. I got 6 to work on mine. With all teh plugins that are available out there and the tools with which to create plugins yourself, no two BartPE environments should be the same (unless you just use what it comes with). My own personal version is up to 5 now, since new plugins come out all the time.

There are not enough good things to say about this one.

Very useful tool, and free is a very good price. I have had this working for me for years now and it has been extremely helpful, especially accessing NTFS partitions when the main OS goes wonky.

BartPE has always been a great program. Of course not when they started off, but the software has matured a lot! I use it for unlocking PCs using the ERD commander pluggin with virus scanner and network support. It's great! There are many more features of the program that can be integrated from other developers, I would recommend this program to any computer administrator who responds to daily customer problems!

Beautiful tool! The McAfee command line scanner, Stinger, and Ad-Aware plug-ins, work like charms. Short of a catastrophic h/disk failure, files can easily be rescued with Bart's PE if required.

Does anyone know if a Nero version greater than 5.5 will work for a plug-in?

Hi, I noticed that nobody roasted that guy which gave a rating of one for Bart's PE. Yes, suppose that you really cannot comment on that. Perhaps you should read the write up on the software "For administrators only".

Bart PE (Tech 182) is so comprehensive that myself and my work colleagues were blown away for at least an hour of exploring its functionality... and we never even scratched the surface.

If you like exploring/fixing/breaking/etc this is it. There are alternative OS's which boot off one CD, however they do not give anywhere near as much functionality (in the Windows realm). Before I layed my eyes upon BartPE I was looking at Knoppix as a one disc solution (Linux). Truthfully though, the learning curve is steep (for Win users).

Have a look at www.knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Customisations
compare these solutions with the current one, and you will soon realise why this one is a 5!

This has to be the best tool I have ever found, seriously! I have been using it for almost 1 1/2 years. I also wanted to submit a review because of the previous review. UBCD4Win uses Bart's PE, it is not similar....it is Bart's PE. UBCD4Win is a compilation of freeware project already setup for users to include in their PE build.

No question, this is fantastic software. However, for those looking for a simpler way based on BartPE, check out UBCD for Windows. It's quite similar and adds plug-ins a lot easier.

A must have for ANYONE.

I know of several people who needed to recover files when Windows failed to boot. (and lost most or all of their files when taking their system to be repaired)

I know of no other software that can do what this does so easily and it is FREE!

Everyone should make this CD and run it at least once to see how it works before putting it on the shelf.

There are a few things that I could think of to add to this to make it even better, but for what it does it deserves Five stars.

This thing has really helped me fix issues with XP systems, especially cool is that it handles NTFS file system installs with no sweat - I can edit, delete, whatever regardless of whether it is FAT32 or NTFS. Can't do that from a Floppy, I don't think.

I do kind of wish there was a more comprehensive inclusion of free apps and that it was idiot proof to add apps to the CD you make. (I can't seem to get a handle on how to do it very well, hence the idiot proof part)

Regardless, I'm glad this app is out there. I use it more often than I thought I would.

BTW, I wish they would add that PowerDesk 5 Free version - I use that for file management all the time and wish it was default on just about everything. I'm biased. :)

Can I go higher than 5? I wish I could. As Dir. of IT services, and Systems Administrator, I have to give this program the absolute BEST review I could give. This thing has saved me from countless hours of added work. With it's native read/write to NTFS partitions, the ability to incorporate just about any useful utility, and even make it a virtual OS to be used anywhere that you are not near your own PC... this thing ROCKS. Totally customizable, and there are HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of plugins available!!!

I can't say enough good things about this. While the ERD's, and WinPE's et al are out there, this one is the most customizeable I've found, and very easy and intuitive to use. The only learning curve is building your own plugins, but with so many out there... you may not even have to. One thing we would really like to see, is a shell that more closely resembles Windows already incorporated. Some of the replacement shells just don't work like they're advertised to.

Gotta agree with MadRat....If the PlugIn Builder could be incorperated, it would make it way easier especially since the included references are outdated.
I tried over and over, got some proggies to laod but without def or dat files .....
The concept is awsome and a m,uch needed utility.
Currently checking into 911CD which seems a lot simpler to put PU ins in place.....

Its a shame that the plugins are so much work. I have to say my first experience was seeing a derivative work on DVD called WinPE Plus 2004 which had things like Ghost, Partition Magic, ERD Commander, etc... all integrated into this package. The latter would be the ultimate admin's package if not for the licensing nightmare such a package entails. Its not too hard to take Bart's PE Builder and create some monumental admin tools, but it is awfully tough doing it correctly where a newbie can understand it. :)

Nicholas, wow, if you've really been building computers that long, I'm shocked that you don't have more of a clue. BartPE is all about plugins. Plugins to help eradicate malware; plugins to backup and restore, and so on. You can't do that with an OS disc or a burn-in utility. Try again, Sparky. BartPE definitely doesn't deserve 5 stars, if only because its plugin docs suck... as anyone who has created a semi-complicated plugin knows.

I don't know about you, but I plan on using this next time I come across a nuked Windows install on an NTFS partition.
It's an incredibly useful recovery tool.

I've been using ERD Commander, but this looks to be superior in every way and it's free!

Nicholas440 reviewed v3.0.32 on Mar 31, 2004

I see no usefull purpose in using this PE builder. If you want to install an OS, boot off of a boot CD, format your drive, install your OS and you're done. As for burn in and testing, there are dozens of useful and much easier programs available to burn in a new system. I've been building computers since 1985, and I can install, burn in, test etc, all without this PE builder. I tried out, and I personally dont see why anyone would use it other than to play around with the plugins. Also, it was mentioned modify your registry for certain programs, is this s joke, what registry do you have if you have nothing on your hard drive? Duh... Thumbs Down for sure...!!

Bachalor: you can't start explorer or fprot without some registry hacking or using some plugin for it. Have a look in the forum about pe builder http://www.911cd.net/forums/

I think this program is very good, using this when installing windows makes it possible to download driver updates etc during the first part of the install.

This is the best program ever for building custom bootable CDROMs for ANY type of installation. I have used it to create network installs of Windows NT, 2000, and XP all from a Windows Share on the network. It even allows you to create custom boot CDROMS for Linux/Unix distros too!
