what the
avg killed my windows
"In case you are not able to run your Windows XP operating system after AVG virus definition update, it may be caused by a false positive on a specific "user32.dll" system file. The file was moved to the AVG Virus Vault and deleted. Therefore it is not possible to start Windows."

I don't not what's worse, this poor detecting and intrusive anti-virus or fileforums new look. The colours are nice but the layout and lame gnome looking stars aren't(on the site that is)
From my experience trying different AV programs
Avira is the best free option and NOD32 the best pay one

I was a AVG guy for a long time - when v8 came out it kille dmy system constantly 100% CPU and seemed like they went nuts and added all kinda BLOAT crap to it. I agree with the other guy; 8 is not a upgrade to 7.5... For that reason I left them...
Reviewing 8.0.199a1387 (Nov 5, 2008)
The best free anti-virus you can find right now (i know, this one is shareware).
AVIRA has a better detection rate but is really poor when removing threats. It just can't repair anything. It removes files instead and only if they're not running. AVIRA can't do something as simple as reboot to remove files.
The AVG developers team should work on the resident scanner right now. Make it less cpu intensive and avoid locking file while scanning.
If you want a helper tool for AVG try http://tinyurl.com/avg107

ok, yes NOD32 is the best by far, but this was the best "free" av for alongggg time!!!
but now, Avira blows it away.. boot time much faster!!
Reviewing 8.0.196a1383 (Oct 24, 2008)
Detection rates are still OK, it's a shame that version 8 has gone the same way as suites like Norton and Mcafee, boot times are especially slow.
Thumbs down, 8.0 is not an upgrade to 7.5

There's ESET and there's everything else. If you're using anything other than NOD32 you have the wrong anti-virus.

The article below is now invalid as that issue has now been fixed.
This is a great anti virus and i have to agree the first few versions of AVG 8.0 were a bit buggy but its improved very much now
Reviewing 8.0.169a1359 (Aug 27, 2008)
Don't think that you're gonna get AVG Pro for free...I'm sure it's just a trial period program that will cease to work after 30 days...unless you pay for it. If I'm gonna pay for AV then it's gonna be NOD32, but I'll continue to use AVG Free for now...
Reviewing 8.0.169a1359 (Aug 27, 2008)
If the article were BS, then why did AVG retract the feature after the outcry?
Reviewing 8.0.131a1327 (Jun 24, 2008)
Well if the fact that this AV sucks doesn't sway people I'm sure the BS on that article posted below wont either

AVG is a nuisance to the Internet. It uses AVG customer PCs to generate false traffic.
http://www.theregister.c...ews_web_traffic_numbers/
"Early last month, webmasters here at The Reg noticed an unexpected spike in our site traffic. Suddenly, we had far more readers than ever before, and they were reading at a record clip. Visits actually doubled on certain landing pages, and more than a few ho-hum stories attracted an audience worthy of a Pulitzer Prize winner. Or so it seemed.
As it turns out, much of this traffic was driven by the new malware scanner from AVG Technologies.
Six months ago, AVG acquired Exploit Prevention Labs and its LinkScanner, a tool that automatically scans search engine results before you click on them. If you search Google, for instance, and ten results turn up, it visits all ten links to ensure they're malware free.
Then, in February, AVG paired LinkScanner with its anti-virus engine, which has about 70 million active users worldwide. The company estimates that 20 million machines have upgraded to its new security suite, AVG version 8, and this has already cooked up enough ghost clicks to skew traffic not only on The Reg but any number of other sites as well...."
Read the full article and see how cavalier AVG is about spamming the Internet with false traffic.

@CyberDoc999
All quality anti-virus software kernels run as a virtual device driver. Its FAR more efficient than user mode and makes it harder for malware to attack or disable it (also keeps out of sight of n00bs like you so you don't accidentally terminate it)
Research your facts before criticizing.
Reviewing 8.0.52a1239 Beta (Jan 18, 2008)
Quick and simple to use. No I haven't tried uninstalling it yet but then I have not needed to either on my Vista 64 system.
Reviewing 8.0.42a1225 Beta (Jan 4, 2008)
why would you need a Virtual Device Driver as the core?
More bloatware for your computer!
