As a basic and free FTP solution, FileZilla was great. I'd been using FileZilla for years until around 2009 when it came to my attention there was a *GAPING* security problem with it. If you're using it on a personal computer I'd say you're safe if no one ever gets at your machine (root, remote, or otherwise) but in a kiosk or public PC environment, you would be nuts to use it. FileZilla's Achilles Heel is the fact that is stores password in *plain text* in a file called sitemanager.xml? The author had commented on why he didn't want to *fix* this problem by hashing or encrypting the passwords. He's basically said he'll never fix this problem, deal with it. Yeah, no thanks. I switched to WinSCP for SFTP stuff and never looked back. There is NO excuse for passwords in plaintext in known directory/folder locations that can be readily exploited by hackers and thieves. If he ever fixes it, I will change my rating to 5 stars.

    GARBAGE.

FileZilla 2.x used to be the best. Thanks to the stubborn author and clearly poor programming and regressing bugs, FileZilla 3.x is irreparably ruined. A damn shame.

    Use alternatives like WinSCP.

I used to be a big proponent of FileZilla until it was brought to my attention that it will store passwords in cleartext in a file (sitemanager.xml) that any user with access to the machine can harvest. That is bad and the author says it's by design. As a client, it does the job, but for that security hole that is many, many years old, it gets epic fail. If the author ever fixes the security hole, I would be happy to give it 5 stars. But for continuing to make the excuse of "by design", two stars off.

    Important warning!
If you are using your comp unprotected, FileZilla now SAVES YOUR PASSWORDS IN PLAINTEXT!!!!
