Programmers Notepad uses a powerful text-editing engine which allows it to color-code your code like all the good IDEs. Your code, in any one of a number of languages, will all be displayed in customizable colors. Furthermore, it has powerful search and replace functionality allowing the use of regular expressions.
- Minor master scheme changes
- Allows you to set scheme properties for all languages in one place (global styles)
- Scheme changes: Hypertext->HTML, PHP added, PHP Script added
- New extension points for OnBeforeSave and OnAfterLoad
- Ctags tag provider is now an extension, custom tagger plugin format removed
- Extension discovery method: run "pn -findexts"
Reviewing 2.0.5.48 (Mar 1, 2005)
I've searched far and wide for a good editor, and Programmers Notepad is by far the best I've found. It has a very clean, uncluttered interface ,and even though version 2 is under heavy development, I've found it quite stable. At the moment it's missing a few of the advanced features that you might find in other editors, but they are planned features, e.g. hex editing.

Among the many free "better Notepad than Notepad" proggies, this is fairly good, but it's missing columnar operations (the ability to select column-based blocks for all operations that can be done to line-based blocks, such as cut/copy/paste, sort, etc.). NoteTab Light, PSPad, and rsEdit are examples of freeware text editors which include columnar operations.
I do like the clean, uncluttered look of Programmers Notepad. Unfortunately, PN 2 is currently missing hex mode. Version 1 had it, so presumably it will eventually be restored. NoteTab Light and rsEdit are also missing hex mode, but PSPad has it. Out of these 4 freeware editors, PN is the only one which is open source.
