I just had my first look at this program. It's pretty blah. If there weren't so many other great alternatives out there I'd rank it better, but the featureset is bland and the user interface is nowhere near the quality of some of the others. Download and try PSPad or Notepad++ if you want something free that instantly craps on this, or go for EditPlus (fast) or UltraEdit (bloaty but comprehensive) for the best shareware alternatives.

I've searched far and wide for a good editor, and Programmers Notepad is by far the best I've found. It has a very clean, uncluttered interface ,and even though version 2 is under heavy development, I've found it quite stable. At the moment it's missing a few of the advanced features that you might find in other editors, but they are planned features, e.g. hex editing.

Among the many free "better Notepad than Notepad" proggies, this is fairly good, but it's missing columnar operations (the ability to select column-based blocks for all operations that can be done to line-based blocks, such as cut/copy/paste, sort, etc.). NoteTab Light, PSPad, and rsEdit are examples of freeware text editors which include columnar operations.
I do like the clean, uncluttered look of Programmers Notepad. Unfortunately, PN 2 is currently missing hex mode. Version 1 had it, so presumably it will eventually be restored. NoteTab Light and rsEdit are also missing hex mode, but PSPad has it. Out of these 4 freeware editors, PN is the only one which is open source.

This is simply amazing!
I've never used anything that is so fast and configurable at the same time.
I agree that ALOT of work has gone into this.
