  1. Review - QuickTime for Windows

    7.0.4 (Jan 10, 2006)

No problems here, have always been a fan. Anyone know how to find out the changes from version to version, e.g. 7.0.3 to 7.0.4?

  2. Review - Ubuntu

    6.04 (Dapper Drake) (Dec 15, 2005)

    From their website:
Note: This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released in April 2006.

  3. Review - OpenOffice.org for Windows

    2.0 RC2 (Oct 7, 2005)

Awesome software, but what's new/fixed/updated in rc2, I can't see any mention of it on their website?

  4. Review - Directory Opus

    8.0 (Oct 5, 2004)

The best file manager for Windows is now the best media manager too! With image manipulation routines, customized listers for different media types to view metadata (show camera settings for images, etc), a virtual file system for handling archives, etc, it has just become a must-have for all power users. Go give the evaluation copy a try and see for yourself.

  5. Comment - Yahoo Joins Online Office Suite Race with Zimbra Buy

zridling: if you check their product roadmap you'll see that offline support is scheduled for the upcoming v5, due RSN (they say 07Q3). Personally I wonder if being bought by Yahoo will mean that they OSS more of the features that are currently only available through the paid-for releases?

  6. Comment - US INCITS Votes to Approve OOXML With Comments

    8.0 (Aug 24, 2007 - 4:06 PM)

    VHS vs Betamax.
MiniDisc vs CD (vs the other, forgotten attempts).
DVI vs VCD (vs he other, forgotten attempts).
    DVD+ vs DVD-.
    HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray (vs.. http://en.wikipedia.org/...ative_disc_technologies).
    ODF vs OOXML.

So tell me that we're better off with multiple standards for the same thing?

The real problem with OOXML is the vast quantity of technical problems: undocumented "do it the way Office 97 did it" flags, undocumented "insert a chunk of the older format" objects, etc - it isn't a data file specification, it's a container format for older MSOffice data. Unfortunately most of the world is either sufficiently paid off or just plain ignorant to the point that they shouldn't be involved in an actual decision making proces, or both, as the case seems to be.

    Why not just use JPEG2000?

  8. Comment - FTC: Self-Regulation of Violent Content Working

    8.0 (Apr 12, 2007 - 5:31 PM)

It should be against the law for the movie studios to advertise a movie of a higher rating than the one being displayed, e.g. if you're watching a PG13 flick you should be bombarded with trailers for R-rated flicks, regardless of the editing done on the trailer itself.

It is also funny that they expect industries to self-regulate on violence but get medieval regarding sexual content. Gotta love the dichotomy.

  9. Comment - LG to Announce Blu-ray / HD DVD Hybrid Drive at CES

LG make good stuff, they're the main (only?) supporters of DVD-RAM with their awesome super-multi drives.
