I am also going to miss this program very much. This was one of the best tools out there and it was free! You would think that Microsoft would not complain about this program since it meant a lot less vunerable computers out their due to using their operating system. Sure some of the users are using bootleg copies...so what! I mean honestly, does Microsoft think that getting rid of "Autopatcher" is going to make a single one of those users go out and buy a legitimate copy of Windows? I can understand them not wanting those users being able to use Windows Media Player, but I doubt it matters much since it is so easy to find plenty of other free media players out there...some even better than WMP.
I find it very hard to try keeping up with all the patches I need to get, much less what I have already installed. That was one of the main reasons I used and recommended "Autopatcher"...it made the process almost fool-proof. Trying to keep everything patched by going through Microsoft's site is intimitading, especially for newer users, and easy to get overwhelmed so most just give up and don't bother. So Microsoft, I believe, has wasted an excellent resource to help all of the users of it's "buggy" Operating Systems to at least stay partially secure. It seems they are basically punishing all of their "legitimate" users and putting their personal data & information at risk just because of the "non-legitimate" users. With all of the Identity Theft and similar crimes on the uprise, why won't Microsoft let the "Autopatcher" developers continue to help their users?
Sincerely,
Chris

Hmmmm...another hotfix was included with this version. Coincidence that MS shut them down now?

Just download the individual updates and install them. Find someone who has the original RTM of the network sp2 install (newer versions, e.g., SP2b, include stuff that prevents IE7 and WMP11 from installing, for example) and download the full .exe files for the rest.

Can't install WMP11 on your illegal XP license? Tough luck--that likely has to do with the shutdown order as well.

I DID like this program, but honestly I just used my personal collection of updates to install from my thumb drive anyway--it works for me.

No more Auto Patcher?

Now that's a "Genuine DIS-advantage"

I'm sure the problem is with the Microsoft genuine advantage crap. Auto Patcher allows you to update your Windows XP without genuine advantage (except for Internet Explorer 7 and media player 11) If you dont pass the genuine advantage validation on the Microsoft update page you cant get the latest updates from them.

Anyway... Do get it now! It's the closest we'll get to a service pack 3 until well into 2008.

If autopatcher was a lady, I'd make sweeeet love to it.

Tons of registry add-ons, fixes, and everything you need to avoid using Windows Update, gives every excuse to disable the 4+ services that are there for the purpose of Windows update alone.

I'm starting to call XP the "Swiss-cheese-with-most-of-its-holes-plugged O/S". 100 patches sounds about right. But give M$ credit; at least they fix the issues in a timely manner.

Autopatcher is excellent Windows updating software. Just choose exactly what you want, install and only one reboot to patch. The Autopatcher updates aren't all that bad either. You just "Upgrade a full or light installation" when you install them. Every once in a while the developer comes up with a new full release anyways.

Fantastic piece of software. Don't know what I'd do without it!
My only complaint is that the often don't have full releases... it's a pain to download a separate patch.

In response to Blackhole below, I would guess MS has released well over 300 patches for WinXP. I believe last time I checked the patches just since SP2 numbered well over 100.

It's a good way of dealing with the situation when Microsoft yet again correct one more of their mistakes...

Does anyone know how many patches were released since Pre-SP1 XP? It's a big number, big enough to call XP "a patched-up OS"...

These aren't meant as a replacement for WU. They are meant to take a base XPsp2 image, and apply everything you need without an internet connection, with one install and one reboot. It covers java clients, flash clients, other common geek tools as an option, along with hundreds of other tweaks. This tool can save you hours in rebuilding a system from scratch!

No other package comes close, has been around for years, and offers as consistent as quality.

While being a good idea, the authors are a bit late on this. We are waiting for MS up to a month for updates and then an additional week for this collection. Other packs are online the same day MS have their obscure "Patchday". winhelpline.de had the ENGLISH update-pack online on the 12th of October. German version on 11th.

Excellent tool for those of us that have no real use for Windows Update.

My only gripe (and this is a BIG one) is that they release full versions every month in every language except ENGLISH. English only gets monthly UPDATES and a full release every 4-5 months. Sorry, but I do NOT want to apply a full version from APRIL then apply half a dozen others. Just let me download ONE full version when i need it.

It is truly a worthwhile project, but dammit don't make me download updates in between full releases that happen every 4 freaking months! Until English gets full monthly releases like the other languages do this will remain a '3'.

mjm01010101, ATI & Nvidia are for-profit entities with VERY deep pockets, plus their packages are tiny compared to this FREE, massive, laborious endeavor-- I don't envy the poor over-worked author, who to boot provides a website AND forum with tech support one bit. Just go to his site and look up the list of torrents and hosts, instead of clamoring for spoon-feeding: remember that it's not always the actual author who submits packages.
Plus, he doesn'nt need us at all, like an Ati or Nvidia for profit-would: his 'public service' package is famous and has stood on its merits for many years...just like a crowded, popular restaurant has no use/need for a food critic.

That uk mirror posted here is just one of a handful that are available on the ap forums. Whoever submitted the file to bn choose to include that particular mirror, yes it's slow but that's not ap's fault. Whoever decided to mirror the file for them has a slow site, that's all.

btw, for the march update you need dec. 05 full and february 06 update, then on top of that you apply march 06 update. april 06 should have a full installer available again which won't need anything previous installed.

Link is dead.

edit: Link is still dead, I sat for a minute. Look, if you make software available, make it available, or don't. This has been out several years now, I'm thinking they know what type of traffic to expect. At the elast then provide a link to a direct torrent if you can't handle it.

Availability of a product is part of the review. I typically bump ATI's software down a notch because they never do proper planning for their releases on new driver releases. Nvidia I've never had a problem. That is proper planning.

Otherwise, as you'll see in my previous reviews, this product is great.

wat0114

wat0114 reviewed vMarch 2006 on Mar 20, 2006

**EDIT**

The link isn't dead, but it is verrry slow. Those of you on dialup, forget it. You'll be waiting 'til hell freezes over.

Do keep in mind that the full December version is required. This is in addition to that. Run the full version first, selecting and updating whatever you choose, then run this one.

This utility works like a veritable charm! For those of you who suggest: "just click the Windows Update button". Okay, that works too, but at the expense of taking a helluva lot longer with the download time and numerous restarts, while exposing your machine to the Internet. Autopatcher works brilliantly.

mjm01010101

Because WU requires several reboots. WU doesn't install third party items like java RE, toolbars, it doesn't tweak a system or remove uneeded features. It requires an internet connection which might not be desireable since there are network worms out there constantly scanning for unpatched machines. WU also is rather slow, I can use Autopatcher in about a quarter of the time WU does even on a fast net connection, let's not even talk about dial-up. It's free, doesn't require activex installs to check the legitimacy of your product (an insult regardless of whether you've paid for XP or not.) Autopatcher also can install non-public hotfixes that aren't available on WU, and again, it does all this with one reboot, WU will require many reboots on a clean SP2 machine.

The perfect updater for me. Brilliant springs to mind. Keep up the good work.

Here it is:

I do appreciate the author(s) of AutoPatcher. They've done an excellent job to serve the end user community.

And I also would like to thank the folks that help host the file. Your contribution is huge. Without you, it would take forever for us to receive the files.

@ hurzx. What a c... you are! The problem is that you give a rating for a program that is not meant for you to use. If you are too lazy to just go and check the website of the program it's your fitting punishment that you could not use it on your system. You say it yourself: there are localized versions of WinXP around (like the one you own), then you could have taken more care when downloading it couldn't you? Don't blame the author of this great peace of software for your passive attitute!

hurzx

hurzx reviewed vNovember 2005 on Nov 10, 2005

@ benyahuda. What a c... you are! As far as I know, Autopatcher is not a beta!!! Second, it's not a question of translation, you're simply too incompetent to know that locals XP versions exist. Had you a brain and two neurones, you'd had noticed that my english is good enough. How many foreign languages do you speak yourself ?

benyahuda

benyahuda reviewed vOctober 2005 on Oct 14, 2005

hurzx: When I'm trying beta software, or limited release share/freeware, I try to accept that localized editions are rare to non-existant.

If the authors/creators/assemblers speak Suomi or Hebrew or whatever, that is the language I'll have to deal with if I wish to try/use their product.

Instead of a low rating I fire up my world dictionary or Googles translating service and give it a try. I sure don't give a possibly excellent application a poor rating because the people who GAVE it to me FREE to try, speak another language.

If it's just too hard for me to figure it out I just DON'T rate it. Because that's MY problem, not the authors.

This collection of utilities and updates is very useful. It does require a little care in its use. But beyond that, especially for a new installation of XP, this is a tremendous help and timesaver.

Shoot, it would be worth a 5.0 if it was written in Swahili.

By the way, you can go here for help with other languages.

They always release localized versions after the fact. It makes sense that they would release the app quickly in their own language. App developers usually rely on other people to translate into localized versions.

WGA is stupid.

They were trying to figure out what to do with AutoPatcher and WGA. They first released a silly and stupid August release which required the end-user to download the hotfixes from Microsoft. But they should have known better than that...since most people dont want to be bothered with downloading 10 things individually. So that is gone and now we have the full 150+ MB release with all hotfixes.

They are smart to not to include WGA. Its more trouble that its worth.

Only one word can describe this program: WOW.

Im thoroughly impressed by this program.

To begin wtih, It has a GREAT interface. The only gripe I have with the interface is that when you get to the point of choosing which updates to install, you cant increase the window size, thus allowing more to be viewed. Its a pain to have to keep scrolling up and down. But since this thing is a one-time run dealie, its not that big of a deal.

Basically this is a big program that includes EVERY update post SP2. Thus, it is more or less a necessity that one have Service Pack 2 installed before using this program.
It includes all the hotfixes, both the critical and recommended.
It includes all the neat and dumb windows programs, i.e. Journal View, GDI+ tool, Malicious software tool (most recent version), Windows Media Player 10, .Net Framework,
It includes all the of the Microsoft Windows PowerToys, which really impressed me.

But I was shocked to see it included programs like PowerMenu and hardware updates like the Adaptec ASPI layer, and the likes of the Royale theme.
(See the list on the download information page for the whole list).

Almost all of the stuff that it includes, I use...ALMOST.
But whats great aobut all the software in it is that its free. Thus, AutoPatcher XP is free.

The thing is SO easy to use, even an adult can use it.

You run the program (i dont suggest running it off of a 4x CDRW as I was trying to do...Microsoft AntiSpyware wasnt being too nice about it scanning the whole archive for me with the active scanners). It extracts all the data. Then y ou are presented with a menu with all the options you want. You can choose to NOT install certain critical updates...you can choose to install recommnded updates. You can choose whatever you want...all or none (not sure what choose none would do for you though).
After you choose everything you click next and it will install everything.

One nice thing is that it shows you an estimate on how long the install will take.

The best part about it thought is that is has to download NOTHING, and its all unattended. I actually fell asleep while it was running. I woke up a few hours later and all I was presented with was a few light blue colored warnings from Microsoft AntiSpyware due to the install...no harm at all.

This is one of thsoe things you have to have if you are going to format your computer and reinstall Windows XP.

(The absolute BEST use of this software? It bypasses Windows Genuine Advantage since there are no downloads.)

This is the best soluion for updating your version of Windows! And the good thing is, some updates will be unavailable for people using pirated versions of Windows XP later this year, so they can download this and install it overriding Microsoft's restrictions, anyway if this program gets banned from Microsoft for this reason updates could still be found in P2P programs like LimeWire and Morpheus, or on illeagal sites to which the pdates are uploaded...

Maybe it was just a bad internet period, but distribution is part of a complete package, and for me the day I tried to get it (and I really wanted to try it, as I am a sysadmin at NASA) it was no go. Should I have posted a 5 and then tell the author that he had distribuion problems? What would have been the point of that? He needed to know there were problems downloading his product, and I cleary stated in the post why it was a 1 - I don't think my one rating will sway the many positive votes it is getting, so here is a 5 to counter-act my earlier post - but I still don't know how good or bad this program is!

Let me update my previous review. After more testing on several more systems I've found that the autorun file is a bit off and the cd does't play as it should. If you want it to, update the autorun file accordingly. Other things will need some minor tweaking. For example one tweak that comes to mind that is offered during the patch is to remove the little arrows on shortcuts. While I checked it to do so on 4 machines already, it never does without my having to go back into TweakUI and doing it myself. but, all in all, this is pretty good. It gets you the patches and updates it needs, and does it pretty well. Now I'll go test out Keyser Soze's... and see how well it fares.
