Tried GX.Transcoder and loved it (well, some years ago ...)
... but it often crashed and needed to be re-installed before each usage :-(
... then found FormatFactory and would give it "ten" points,
... but there is a limit of 128 kbps, unfortunately :-(
SUPER obviously has no limits, but an awful GUI and is a little bit complicated to work with - I had to change the screen resolution first to find the startbutton at the bottom :-(
So, nobody is perfect, but you may live well with a triumvirat ...

Very buggy software, it crash often during conversion, and the interface is a just ugly. I prefer FormatFactory, it support the same input/output formats of GX::Transcoder, the interface is much more friendly, it's pretty solid and stable and is also free.

On my PC I have only a small amount of bugs. The player is not so easy to understand - the transcoder is simple and good. I don't understand your opinion? I don't use the other modules of this software, thats why i can not rate this parts.

It has nothing to do with V5 being a neverending beta; it has been buggy and cumbersome since its first release a year ago. Heck, even Winamp 5 has a much better transcoder (which is simple and fast to use at that).

    Reviewing 5.0.2.844 Beta 8 (Jun 23, 2008)

    Problems galore!
    Everything seems to run slow.
Player cant see more than 2 folders deep!!?? Even though the transcoder can...?? Couldn't play most of my music files as a result.
Couldn't get it to open mpeg for tranz to mp3 !!?
Seems to open only basic audio file types.
Clicked on 'speaker' button and immediately got major app crash...
Even if this thing worked it is ridiculous to take out 20Mb of HD for the functionality it has.
Anyone looking at this should look at AIMP2 which is primarily a player but has excellent transcoder, recorder, library, tag edits etc. as utilities and takes out about 7Mb of hard drive. Something definitely wrong here because I really think the GxTranscoder of about 2 years ago was much better than this junk. It's getting worse over time.

Tried the previous version, blew up loading data base, This one seems to load my Db but is too slow to be useful (over 30k files). The progress bar at the bottom of the player tab is black with dark text so you have to struggle to see where it is in the process. No way to stop Db loading once it starts short of terminating the program. Once Db loading starts, nothing else seems to work. Tried registering on the support site, got into a loop with registering, never was able to successfully register.
Nice program menus but not much use if you can't use them.

Nope, betanews is not rigged. The reason for the high rating is because GX::Transcoder version 2 was a really good software. The rating have been carried over from the previous version.

You can download version 2.24 from here:

This version 3 is really really buggy. And currently ver 3 only supports audio transcoding. There is going to be another series of buggy alpha builds when the video transcoder edition of version 3 is released.

If ATE stands from Audio Transcoder Edition, what does AWE stand for? I don't find any support for video yet.

Nice eye candy improvements, but its quite buggy - pressing play when there are no items in the playlist causes unhandled exceptions, program crashes at startup.

Is there an English Changelog anywhere?

It'd be nice to be able to transcode from any of the supported formats TO any of the formats. If you use iTunes and have unprotected files (aac), you can transcode to another format. For some reason my peripheral can only read WMA, and it's a pain in the butt to change a file from AAC --> MP3 --> WMA.

    I admit that when I rated it 5 earlier, I've been over-enthusiastic.

Following me bragging about it, I advised several people to use it. Every single one of them have complained about it and stopped using it after very few attempts.

Yes, the UI is totally bloated, clunky and counter intuitive. I admit that I was fortunate enough to get around it "rather" quickly myself, but it wasn't without struggle, and I hear from numerous people that just can't manage to do anything with it. I'll even add that I'm hardly surprised.
Yes, there are numerous bugs which are STILL not fixed after numerous new releases. Clearly the authors give priority to adding bells, whistles and icing instead of dedicating this precious time to actually get the features already built in to work.
Yes, although it still possible to switch to English, if like me you're not German litterate, there WILL be situations where you'll hit the language barrier (either while using the software, or while trying to get support).

I'll still give it a 3 to encourage the authors, but I personally gave up waiting for a rock solid build that will become my de-facto multimedia converter.

I mean it's a total disaster as far as I'm concerned. And you'd think after such a period of time, the amount of bugs would at least have been brought under control. I'm still rooting for the team here, since it is a powerful tool and free at that, but I don't know how much longer this can continue.

Unfortunately I think these people have bitten off more than they can chew. Although the interface is very pretty and seems to offer a comprehensive array of media related functions, it seems most just don't work. For example I created a playlist (player) and after finally working out how to add some files I got all sorts of duplications and errors appearing in the list and when I clicked on one song it played a different one (and displayed the details for yet another) Netradio didn't work at all. Nor did CD extract. It's been this way for a couple of years now - pity! It's all too flaky. VB is too fat for this type of app also.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI, is an industry-standard electronic communication protocol that defines each musical note in an electronic musical instrument such as a synthesizer, precisely and concisely, allowing electronic musical instruments and computers to exchange data, or "talk", with each other. MIDI does not transmit audio - it simply transmits digital information about a music performance.

also got screwed up output file names. artist-title.ogg became artist-titlepq928323948.mp3. other times artist1-songA.ogg became artist1-songB.mp3, or maybe artist2-songE.mp3, which had the effect of randomly overwriting files.

There are plans to support even more audio formats. The transcoder also contains a video converter. This converter can transcoder between all installed avi codecs, mpeg with dvd, vcd and svs extension and wma video files.

I have no argument against that (losing quality) but the degree of loss is incredibly more significant than with other products I've used. That's my only point. I respect the effort put into this product, and I'm fully away it is "beta". But to ignore problems in "beta" versions just because they're said to be "beta" means that they risk not getting fixed either. That's the point of "beta": to test and submit discovered limitations and defects so they get fixed before final release.

@gs0934 It's so stupit - converting compressed media to compressed media without lossing quality. You ever loss quality - it is not possible converting lossy to lossy without quality loss (also not with the descret cleaner).

I'll rate the program as I've used it. So I installed it, no faults there. I run it and it's in German. I know that "Language"="Sprache" in German (that's about all I know!) so I turn it to English, and there I have a GUI all in English. No problem here as far as I could see. Then I decide to convert a file. So I drag and drop "Windows XP Startup.wav" to the interface, and no problem, it was there. I select as output format "MP3", prerss the green arrow, play the result, it works. Try to convert to OGG, it works. I drag the OGG, convert to APE, it works. I don't know what people whine about, but from this little 2 minutes test, it seems very good for free! No, I didn't try video, I understand some people have synch problems, but to be fair, I stopped fiddling with videos because I had synch problems even with commercial packages! Anyway, 5 stars here. Actually, I quickly converted a small DivX3 (ok, without sound) to both WMV and MPG, and albeit the WMV video was very large (I didn't bother checking options :p), both videos worked just fine.

Notice that the pictured GUI indicates video conversion capabilities: none are available. All-in-all, not up to par. The mixture of German and English is very disconcerting. We downloaded the 257 & the 263 versions (5 and 10 M) with no difference video nor pictured GUI. When converting to MP3 from .WAV, the MP3 ran very fast, making the words indistinguishable. Very good decoder for my private work - I suspect, that this ENCODER was a lot of hard progammer work. Thanks for this freeware - this Encoder can ALL files, they I know.
