ProMEPIS Linux is a Linux OS based on Ubuntu that can be run from your CD drive without installation. Where it shines is its easy, 100% "point and click" installation, and automatic detection of not only "normal" computer hardware but also popular webcams, the latest wireless network cards, "Winmodems" that usually work only with Windows, digital cameras, scanners, and other devices.

The difference between SimplyMEPIS and ProMEPIS is that SimplyMEPIS will continue to be a freely available desktop MEPIS bootable CD and ProMEPIS will designate an upcoming multi-CD packaged version of MEPIS.

Been a microsoft guy since the old dos days. Watched windows from 3.1 till vista more is not better. I find simply mepis to be the only linux distro to enable me to get past the the big changes between windows and linux. I tried ubuntu, mandrive, mint and ran away. Figured I would give mepis a try. WOW it found my hardware installed the drivers and I had a OS that I could use. Has this great app synaptic that allows you to install a ton of great stuff "games too" with a point and a click. Mepis is not dos and from what I can see will take a leap of a learning curve to use the terminal. Takes me back to command prompts during the good old dos days. Just have to learn the language. Glad I found Mepis

It's clear that nincompoops without so much as a modicum of tech savvy should be reviewing an OS that doesn't need to be activated.

This is one of my favorite distros out there. The built in support for all kinds of hardware right from the get go is impressive. As an example, Mepis has built in support for more display monitors than any other OS I've seen. The networking support is second to none. These are the kinds of easy things that the Ubuntu's, which purport to be novice friendly, should really look at Mepis as an example.

Mepis is rock solid. Believe it or not that strength leads me to what I feel is downside (IMO) - the extremely conservative development path. I'm almost seriously wondering if we'll ever see KDE 4 in Mepis. On the other hand it looks like they're finally making the leap in upgrading the kernel.

Overall if you value "it just works" over anything cutting edge then I couldn't recommend Mepis more.

like so many linux distributions, it is totally user unfriendly asking me to logon as DEMO with no clue as to what the password should be ... Only and idiot designs a system that way.
Screen reolution is capped out 1024 800nmwithu no clear way to change it.

Only mandriva has addressed thes issue partially

Might just be the best distro.I have tried. Only judging by using the live cd, this latest version of Mepis was solid across the board. Plus I like the new desktop view. The next old pc i come across to work on will def. get this as its os.

Pretty good. Spent a couple hours fooling around with it. No probs at all. Always liked Mepis. Its one of the few Linux distro's i feel comfortable trying out. If i ever dump windows with another pc, this os is def. on the list to replace it.
