I used this program some years ago when I was using XP. Thereafter I assumed it was an XP program. But after reading below & checking the web site I see it also works on 7.
I've installed & configured it, no problems. And thanks for the info it's not just for XP.

Well, whatever. I'm just a simple end user and don't know dookie about software coding, but hardwiring ebay into a piece of software like this is just too weird. The software has to make sense to me or I can't use it.
I used to always look for XP-AntiSpy, but now....now....
Look, with enough determined poking around I can do for myself most of what this program does, but anyway, I looked for Connell's email link. I would rather have said this less publicly.
Hey I know a guy has to make a living and I would gladly pay a share for this, but I just cannot tolerate adware.
So, Connell do us all a favor and 1)make XP AntiSpy shareware and 2) loose the ebay ball and chain.

You are doing great work, my friend! Most of us understand and appreciate the time you have put into this program. And we thank you.

@Chris
You've made a GREAT program, and no the ebay-search in the bottom is no problem at all.
Thank you for your effort in helping us to tweeak windows in a secure way., it's really appreciated.
UPieper reviewed v3.97-5 on Nov 4, 2009
Changelog:
* improved the detection of all mediaplayer versions and their settings.
* This version is now compatible with Windows 7
* Added little ad from my sponsor eBay to the application.
Although this changelog desn't look very big, it was a lot of work, to add support for Windows 7.
I hope you do not get upset about the now included ad from my sponsor eBay. But I invest a lot of my free time in the xp-AntiSpy and also I have to pay for my domains, webspace and traffic. So if you visit my sponsor you can help me to keep up developing the xp-AntiSpy without donating any money.
Don't misunderstand the xp-AntiSpy goin' adware. This is not gonna happen. None of your private data will be transmitted if you visit my sponsor. A browser will open, and you will be directed to my sponsor redirection script ( http://www.xp-AntiSpy.or...p&search="your search term" ) nothing more and nothing less will happen.
You also can close this litte ad by clicking on its close button.
If you feel you have to give me some feedback about this or other things concerning the xp-AntiSpy, you're welcome to contact me at any time.
Greetings, -chris-

ADWARE !!! Blacklist this !!!
cricri_pingouin reviewed v3.97-4 on Oct 23, 2009
Now with eBay adware. Top marks for hypocrisy! Unfortunately, that's not what the rating here is designed to rate.
In addition, it is still advertised as "freeware", hence a red card.
Addendum: if like me you block it with your firewall and click the ad by mistake, the process will not close and you'll have to do so manually from the task manager.
Lsavagejt reviewed v3.97-4 on Oct 23, 2009
Wow, what a let down! Am I dreaming or did I see an ebay toolbar stuck to the bottom of this thing. I know I unchecked the option to install the ebay toolbar too.
XP-AntiSpy taking sponsorship from ebay--The irony is too much. Ack!

Version 3.97-1, "Fixed a bug in the setting to prevent autostart on removable media". IMO, this fix is bugged, as I have previously fixed autorun removal system-wide and that this fix seems unable impose itself: it just won't run.+
Still, 5 stars for an excellent product.

Allowing the creation of a 'first profile' was probably *the* most beneficial addition to this program in it's***ory.
Now if someone oversteps their bounds and cripples their system due to a lack of knowledge of what they're doing, they can't blame anyone but THEMSELVES.
I've used this program since it's very early beta days all the way through to Vista, and it's never failed me once - some of the most valuable tweaks for 2 separate Operating Systems are right here in a single application, it's easy to use and does exactly what it says (as always)
GOOD JOB to the devs of Xp-AntiSpy !!!

The suicide rate at Redmond should have been high when the Windows design team discovered this utility. They realized how much of their many design flaws and crap are corrected by the works of a single developer in a simple and small utility.

This is an invaluable tool for slimming down and securing your XP install.
I do believe that this program should come with your XP's CURRENT settings, as any noob can seriously disable their system by ticking/unticking what they *think* should be changed.
4 out of 5 for an extremely good utility! -1 point for not implementing CURRENT settings as the default ticked/unticked settings.

I do agree with bobad the initial checkmarks should be set to current config.
Otherwise it's a great tool but you have to be sure of what you check or uncheck because it can prevent some softwares to run...

Awsome program. Use this if you don't like Microsoft stuff, like error reporting you can disable it ect. :)
bobad reviewed v3.95 on Oct 4, 2005
XP-Antispy is a nice program to be sure. I like the simplicity, compactness, and the GUI. It has 1 serious drawback, however. When initially launched, it has suggested changes checked. That's just wrong. It should only indicate your current settings, and allow you to name and save them. If you're not paying close attention and hit "Apply", some stuff may quit working and you will have no idea why. Other than that, it's a fine and very useful program.

The name is misleading, but the application provides plenty of tools to help customize windows.
Blackhole8746 reviewed v3.94-2 on Jun 18, 2005
Does a great job! I wonder how Microsoft didn't stop it from appearing on the Internet! Just like they talk to Norton and McAfee and ZoneAlram in order to make their software in a way that it keeps Microsoft's spyware hidden!
Kramy reviewed v3.94-1 on Jun 17, 2005

This program is wonderful. May be not as complete as more complex utilities, I find it has the right number of tweaking options. I've used xp-AntiSpy quite often. I didn't feel any need of an undo option or better interface. Thank you to the author to make this freeware.
phaes reviewed v3.83 on Aug 24, 2004
Although I like the unspy options and other tweaks it provides, it lacks clarity for the general user in terms of selecting/deselecting items, and the options menu.
I.e. It's not clear, when all the options first appear if the green checks already there indicate recommended changes or the current registry settings on those option.
Some items changed even though I had -not- checked the box, and two items didn't change that I -had- checked boxes on.
Most available tweaks were things I had already edited manually in the registry, so for the "average" user, a "save your current state" option would be a great addition; a clear description of the action un/making a check mark will cause would be great (similar to blackviper.com's additional registry info), and an "undo (most or selection of all) changes you've made" could also be very helpful!
Yes, I know it's a beta, so all this may sound harsh. I'm trying to see this in terms of impact on tech supports who have to deal with a population of users who basically know how to type and click on things, and not much else, and are constantly downloading "interesting," "cool," and "thought it would be able to fix something (else I screwed up but didn't report 'cause I didn't want anyone to know I screwed up/broke the download policy/whatever)," and creating a population of helpdesk employees with missing patches of hair who are experiencing an ever-stronger urge to find a -=different=- occupation :)
TechSys reviewed v3.83 on Aug 23, 2004
Just installed it and ran it. Also ran Spybot and Adaware to make sure. There isn't any spyware crap in this program, and whoever says there is has a problem.
Program seems to do what it says it does, and does it very well. Out of everything it check, I only had 1 thing that I didn't like, which was, I still had the zip functionality active..

zulugrid reviewed v3.7 on Oct 27, 2002
As mentioned previously, most, if not all, of these options are easily accessable through various control panels and options dialogs. The UI is also very bad. It shouldn't check stuff by default. I only wanted to change 2 or 3 things, but had to click about 40 times because of the default checking of almost everything. And when I got about halfway down the list and unchecked something, it decided to recheck everything I had previously uncheck. I was unable to uncheck one item without having to go and enable "expert settings". The "Check System State" option should show already applied settings as checked and show the rest of them unchecked, none of these stupid exclamation points. And again the exclamation points reappear once I click "Apply settings". This program is supposed to be used to change default settings, so isn't it kind of ironic that I have to be constantly bombarded with its default settings?
Dirk van Hoofen reviewed v3.7 on Oct 26, 2002
Super, it works fine for XP.
Thanks for it as FREEWARE
rocky500 reviewed v3.61 on Aug 18, 2002
This program is excellent.
Don't trust Microsoft to any info from your computer. They are interested in 1 thing, and that is to make as much money as possible no matter how it's done.
All those complaining that all the settings got changed should have done the obvious thing and looked at the help file. It tells you PLAIN & SIMPLE what will be the changes.
I can't believe people whine & didn't even look at help file first!
This is plain & simple an excellent free util & a must have.
daztop reviewed v3.51 on May 8, 2002
davorb: Any application that is set AS DEFAULT to cause a detrimental on my user experience is NOT a good thing. No 2-ways about it - as long as it chooses to set everything as default WITHOUT WARNING, the util will remain a 1-star application. It should either warn before applying settings that I haven't chosen, or NOT apply them. The author has already added a "choose recommended settings" option - why be conceited and automatically apply them without asking?
_jaz_ reviewed v3.51 on May 7, 2002
A) This software is called "XP-Antispy" because it changes some registry settings of Windows XP (This is for that one saying that he applied it flawlessly too on Win98SE)
B) Almost every setting in this program is easily accesible from the configurations of each program, so at much, it is usefull in putting them all together, not much.
C) Most of the settings it allows to disable, I feel like they are better enabled, just because they are of actual use (Time sincronization, to say one). For this reason, I see that a program made especifically to disable this, it is useless (you can select another server, if you don't like it to check from microsoft.com)
D) To the few persons blaming Microsoft for spying... Are you kidding? Internet Explorer has had, since version 4, a setting (that could be disabled too) to check for autoupdates. Were you being spied by microsoft when it checked for updates? Come on!
Pentium 3 had that "Identifier code", that finally Manufacturers put it disabled for "security reasons". Security? Is that code associated to me in any way? It identifies my computer, but not myself!
and E) I don't want to make this a MS versus non-MS war, but this is what this program seems all about.
gimpnet reviewed v3.51 on May 7, 2002
There are still quite a few bugs to work out, and there aren't many servers BUT.... This is a beta program and it's fairly new. I don't expect there to be many people using this program right away. look at any file p2p sharing program out there in the beginning. i'll bet none of them had a mass of support for quite a while. keep up the good work nexea.
davorb reviewed v3.51 on May 7, 2002
Notice: German is the primary language here, and you probably either didn't read the docs or they were hard to understand. Either way, this is good stuff, and it's free. I cant see how ANY of the red ! and the "cure" would hurt anything, certainly not beyond repair. Operator error/ PEBKAC is *NOT* a reason to rate eminently USEFUL FREEWARE poorly. You sound lame, 1 star person. Get over it, this software kicks ass, it keeps MSFT from looking in your business and its a perm. in my util. collection. To all who havent tried, you don’t want this, you NEED THIS. Seeing as it FREE, there would be no reason for the author or zealots to troll for good marks, this thing deserves 5 stars, period, end.
zeio reviewed v3.51 on May 7, 2002
Superior. You NEED this to maintain privacy on XP. I have also used it on 98SE and Win2k without much issue as well. A must have.
DragonDesigns reviewed v3.51 on May 6, 2002
(To the last review) Just because you don't know how to use a piece of software don't give it a bad rating. The reason it disabled all your settings is because you left the red exclamation points. Those are there saying "this is a problem and we're going to fix it". So if you don't want it to fix it you click on it and then it will uncheck that option. That would have made it so it wouldn't have done all the changes to your system. It's a great piece of software that includes the options TweakUI doesn't.
saltek reviewed v3.51 on May 6, 2002
It works just as advertised. Small, clean and to the point. Does it's job well. Not to mention, if you want to go back to the default settings or change your settings, it handles that too. Fine app.
