Another dying industry. Windows can play DVDs natively now, there is no longer a need for programs like this any more than there's a need for the hardware DVD decoder cards that used to plug into a PCI slot.

With all the other methods out there for playing a DVD, why would you resort to this? It does work. 3 stars for that. But between mpc, vlc, mplayer and wmp, why would you install this?

Reviewing 10.0.5.361 (Jul 23, 2010)
WORTHLESS for playing Blu-Ray. I can't understand why so many people gave this positive reviews. I tried it because it claimed to play Blu-Ray Movies and be integrated with Windows 7 Media Center. It's "integration" is a JOKE, all it does once you click the icon in Media Center is minimize Media Center and open the program in Full Screen Mode in Windows. The worst part is that when I tried to play a simple Blu-Ray movie that has been out for a year, a message comes on the screen saying "Media Not Supported". I'm glad I tried the free trial and not bought the thing.
I've tried other Corel products and what one of the other reviewers said about how "Corel is where once great software programs go to die" is totally correct.
Reviewing 10.0 (Sep 17, 2009)
There were only two reasons to use WinDVD: upscaling and TrimensionDNM.
Without these two features WinDVD was a complete waste of time. It's nice to see that v. 2010 is a much nicer and smoother player. Yes, it's big and the download may seem bulky, but after starting to hate the previous versions, this newest one surprised me by how good the program really is. It's not quite perfect yet, but it is excellent and very much better than v.9.
If you've come to hate WinDVD because of the older versions, try this one and you may love it again.
I can't give it 4.5 out of 5, so I'm giving it 5.
Reviewing 9.0 (Mar 24, 2008)
Helps you. The other s are not professional.
It makes your eyes understand real movie standarts.
There are freewares and sharewares. If you have one of them your machine will stand alive.Which one if you have windvd plus. I have one from ibm laptop works fine and keeps my laptop young and helps me. You dont need to install any codecs. No trouble yes succesfull.
Reviewing 9.0 (Mar 21, 2008)
I've been using WinDVD for some years now, and I have to agree with some of the reviews previous to mine. For one, a 180 meg download is ludicrous. Once installed, the program comes up way short in function. Open source always opens to the same location even if you store your movies elsewhere, and there is no place to set that. Second, I never understood why the Interactual player gets installed along with WinDVD since they both play DVD's.... am I missing something here? Finally, the installation size compared to something like VLC or Media Player Classic, or even Media PLayer (installed already with Windows) is insanely large. Download a codec pack like K-Lite which is half the size or smaller, and all the codecs you need are installed to view DVD's, Xvid, Divx, etc etc.
Avoid this. It's so not worth the shareware nags, or paying the high price to clutter up your System.
Reviewing 9.0 (Mar 20, 2008)
$80 for a crappy software DVD player? Are they insane? I can install a codec and a player like MPC, VLC, GOM, etc for FREE and they'd still be a lot better than this piece of garbage. I hope this company goes under for being so stupid.
Reviewing 9.0 (Mar 20, 2008)
K-Lite Codec Pack Full provides all the codecs that Windows Media Player 11 needs to view and listen to DVD movies. There's no need to use "pay for" programs.
Reviewing 9.0 (Mar 20, 2008)
Nice eye candy GUI, other than that, this is bloatware to an extreme. 174 meg installations, to play DVD and most current other formats? WinAvi, Zoomplayer, and a few others offer virtually the same features, with 95% less disk space occupied.
Unimpressive.

Reviewing 8.0.6.109 R3 (Mar 28, 2007)
Version 6 was ok, v7 was great but v8 is shockingly bad.
The download is huge, and doesn't even contain everything you need to run the product: you'll still have to download over 50MB of DirectX components (unless they're already installed by another application).
Half the features do not function, such as TrimensionDNM, and the player is unstable even with the Platinum license on a high-spec PC.
If you're running WinXP, you're best off using WinDVD 7. Unfortunately, you'll need WinDVD 8 if you're running WinVista, so I'd recommend a different programme altogether.
Reviewing 8.0.6.109 R3 (Mar 27, 2007)
Yes its big but its a great player, its stable and has many options, its the only player I use for DVDs, its not like you launch it every couple of minutes or that its for playing mp3s, I think its mostly for movies.

I have had all versions from version 4 up to the recent version WinDVD 8 Platinum. I have had compatability trouble with version 7 and now WinDVD 8 Platinum wont even execute after a successful registration.
I have now removed it from my computer. Another anoying thing is when installing you are asked if you want to install a reporting program that sends info back to Intervideo's data base, even if you selsct no it still installs the program, I'm sick of these instalations that want to put all these unwanted programs on as well.
Yes WinDVD 8 Platinum is nothing short of pure CRAP. Stay away from it
Reviewing 8.0.6.104 R2 (Dec 20, 2006)
Downloaded and worked with this upgrade all day just to see if it would change my mind. Nope. This folks, is what you call a complete trainwreck of software. From its bloat to its unrealistic price, it can no longer be taken seriously.
Reviewing 8.0.6.104 R2 (Dec 19, 2006)
I only give it 2 because it does what it's advertised for: it plays DVD movies. Other than that it's a collection of crap - some enormous download size bundled with tons of unneeded software, the installer doesn't check for .Net 2.0 which is required for installation, sometimes the application doesn't properly uninstalls.
I leave my friends with PowerDVD 6 (I'm a Linux user).
Reviewing 8.0.6.101 R1 (Nov 29, 2006)
WinDVD 8 has some serious audio/video synchronization problems. Also, this product does not integrate very well with Windows XP Media Center edition. In order to change any of the settings in WinDVD 8 you have to quit XP's Media Center and run WinDVD 8 externally. PowerDVD 7 on the other hand has a settings page designed specifically for Media Center, not to mention much better video quality.
In WinDVD 8 if you use the TrimensionDNM feature the video is so jerky it makes DVD's unplayable. This happens on my desktop, which has an AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ CPU, 3GB DDR2 memory, and an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT PCIe graphics card w/256MB of GDDR3 memory and also my Dell E1505 laptop which has an Intel Core 2 1.66 GHz processor, 2GB DDR2 memory, and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 PCIe graphics adapter w/128MB dedicated memory.
Reviewing 8.0.6.101 R1 (Nov 28, 2006)
(this review may range from misplaced to helpful... the latter being my intention)
WinDVD 7 is an artpiece of a player, incredibly complete (different from bloated) and the audio and video options were the dream of those who like good quality and "tweakability" in those aspects. Awesome.
Version 8 is really too much in size, i didn't even try it, but it's definitely too much, so get version 7. Incredible soft.
GOM Player is just one more from a mediocre crowd, it's "barely ok" in features, so don't let yourselves be convinced by those fanboys. It's free and light, but TOO BASIC. That's it.
Try WinDVD 7. A must.
Reviewing 8.0 (Nov 24, 2006)
I upgraded last year from preinstalled WinDVD 5 to WinDVD 7 Platinum on a brand new Toshiba Qosmio player W pro SP2 MCE. Wasn't too impressed as the program only starts when it wants. Sometimes ok, sometimes I get nothing at all on double click. Support never replied. This year, I decided to write over this failed install and upgraded to WinDVD 8 Platinum. The install process went fine, wrote over a perfectly fine, registered and up to date version of Quick Time. the installer then downloaded a newer(...) version of Windows installer, went through the install process and left me at the end with an error 1628 failed installation. I can see WinDVD 8 in c/program file but if i click on the exe file, it first sends me to a registration page, then asks me if i would like to take part into some kind of online survey and then I get a Windows error, would you like to send the file to Microsoft. I repeated the same full process several times emptying the temp file every time. No program icon has been created, no short cut in the start menu, no entry in the "add remove program". Arghhhhhhh. How do I get rid of it. I tried contacting support @ intervideo through their automated link and received an email bak: user unknown. I tried "sales" with the same result. Their agent in the UK doesn't answer the phone. I finally managed to send an email to "billing" and await a reply. I have lost a lot of time and money. No way to contact the company and my computer is now clustered with a useless program impossible to remove. Shame there is no 0 rating.
Reviewing 8.0 (Nov 16, 2006)
I had WinDVD 4, the full platinum package, and when I upgraded my PC to XP, the old version 4 reverted back to the useless trial version, and as their paid-for product keys are only good for 10 days, I was forced to go to Intervideo website to get a new one, whereupon I found they are up to V-8. Reasonable to upgrade I thought, so I DL the free trial version WINDVD-8, wouldn't load at all (multiple errors on install). Went back to their site and was informed I have to pay for full product to get support. $60 later I STILL have a useless program that will not load and now nearly a week later despite MULTIPLE requests for support I have heard NADA from Intervideo. I have had to go with the competitor's product POWER DVD instead because my project had a deadline (which I missed thanks to Intervideo). WORTHLESS RIP OFF PRODUCT!! STAY AWAY FROM INTERVIDEO!

Landfish is right; I'm wrong, especially with this 8.0 version. To be fair, the 7.0 version I last reviewed was half this size at 55M. Seems like the free GOM Player is so much better, smaller, faster, and does all the little extras that WinDVD does.

Reviewing 8.0 (Nov 8, 2006)
Installer generated a series of errors for files that failed to register on WinXP SP2. On uninstall, the same files failed to unregister. I have admin rights, nothing should have stopped the installer, antivirus was also deactivated for the install to avoid interaction. Also, the tray icon for NOD32 a/v was replaced with a "black box" icon on reboot and until WINDVD 8 was removed, although the a/v program appeared to be functioning correctly when clicked. Other quirks noted. Odd results for a new - not beta - release. My purchase is being processed for refund.

Bloated, are you kidding? WinDVD is so simple and streamlined, it's amazing. Their interface improvements on this version compared to the last are great. Although the free Media Player Classic will play your DVDs, WinDVD Platinum makes it all so... easy. If you watch a lot of video, then it's well worth it.

Reviewing 7.0 Release 5 (Nov 10, 2005)
vanleeuwen, the increased size is caused by optional Google Desktop Search components in 5 language versions. Therefore InterVideo could cut the price (Google covers some price share).
WinDVD is great, what I like most is almost perfect support for DVD+/-VR. PowerDVD has serious problems with the standard, at least with the European (PAL) substandards of recordable DVDs.

Reviewing 7.0 B27.115 (Sep 16, 2005)
That was then; this is now. InterVideo dropped the price and this baby is fast, loading DVDs much faster than a physical player. Interface controls are a lot easier to navigate now, too. Well worth it.
Reviewing 7.0.B27.073 (Jul 30, 2005)
I registered version 6, but this is not a significant improvement, and not worth having. Stick with 6 or just use K-Lite.
Reviewing 7.0.B27.073 (Jul 29, 2005)
compared to other popular DVD players and media players such as PowerDVD, MPC, VLC, and wmp, i think this is much better, the interface is nice, etc, but it's so slow to load. i don't know if it's just me, but i find myself waiting a long time between opening windvd and the DVD actually starting to play. it is much better than v6, and i hope they can streamline it in further releases.
i usually use vlc for media files, but since it's GUI is so bad, it's not very practical for DVDs, eventhough it plays them just fine. as for mpc, well i like the player a lot, but i have trouble with it remembering my audio settings, keeps reverting from 4 speaker to stereo, so that's why i don't use it at the moment.
overall, this is a good player

Reviewing 7.0 (Jun 16, 2005)
This player is the best in it's market of bloated full futured players. It's faster, more stable and better to config than PowerDVD. That's why this product get's a four vote from me. But that's only in comparison with those other similar products.
But I do not intend to use it. Why not? Because there is a very good free option called Media Player Classic, by Gabest. Go search for it, you can play virtually anything with it.
The problem with players like WinDVD and PowerDVD is that they are big, very big (heavy on the resources). They are only intended to play DVD's, they are way to slow and big to play anything else.
Reviewing 7.0 (Jun 15, 2005)
They want $40.00 to upgrade from version 6. I had to pay that to upgrade to version 6 fron version 5. That's nuts.No wonder there is so much piracy.Lately I have been using Nero Showtime, it's just as good and not as bloated.

V7 is good. It's better, quicker and smaller than V6 (About 15MB less than v6 in Add/Remove).

Reviewing 7.0 (Jun 15, 2005)
This has turned into a bloated pig of a program. Now it has Google Toolbar and Desktop search? Why on earth does anyone need those to watch movies? For what it's worth PowerDVD is becoming a mess also. I have decided to stay with PowerDVD 5 as it works fine without trying to take over my system. They've run into a problem; how much more can you improve a DVD player? I mean it plays movies. So they need new gimmicks to sell new versions, begin adding junk and unecessary features and basically turning a once great program into garbage. Just buy an older version of PowerDVD and that's all anyone needs. If you want a perfect picture buy a standalone DVD player. You can get one for much less than this junk. WinDVD 7 just isn't worth paying for; I wouldn't install it if it was free.
Reviewing 7.0 (Jun 15, 2005)
The one feature I want, which is better error condition handling, is lacking. I want the player to not crash or freeze if the DVD has scratches or flaws. This is far more important to me than any feature they've added in the past few years.

If this player was way, waaay cheaper I would have given it a higher score.
But, I can download Windows Media Player Classic V6.4.8.3 and the AC3 filter V1.01a for free and I get great video and sound . I can also use WMPC with my Streamzap remote control.
I actually prefer WMPC because I can turn up the Volume without having to crank up my System Volume(especially if you open the ac3 filter and boost the gain). Before you buy, download the two files that I mentioned and compare for yourself.
For this much money I would expect some advanced filters to help out on older/poor video to improve picture quality.

well it works pretty well for DVDs and such.. MediaPlayerClassic still isnt primetime ready for DVD's.. also does a good job of VCD..SVCD but it does an absolute really crap job of Xvid and DivX.. it freezes and skips and is amazingly sluggish to use when loading a xvid encoded .avi file for example and sound and video went out of sync immediately and loading a .wmv only crashed it. Quicktime worked ok until I tried loading a protected .mov file then WinDVD went nuts and not even a reboot made it start again.. so.. uninstalled and bye bye for now.. Is anyone else know how to get the "Finish by" feature to work? (The "Play in" feature is all that is left.)
Reviewing 5.0 (Jun 15, 2003)
ABOUT THE MSXML ISSUE:
To solve this issue, make a sub-folder named "msxml" in the Windows (or Winnt) directory and place a fake file in it named "msxml3sp2Setup.exe" (to do so, create "msxml3sp2Setup.txt" then change its extension to exe)
The program should then allow you to install .
If you are re-installing, create that folder under X:\Program Files\InterVideo\DVD5 folder and place that file in it.

I am using WinXP-Home,(SP1), and have DirectX 9.0a installed. I was using version 4.5.11.26, and uninstalled this to install version 5.0. If found no problems during the installation process. The only change I made after the installation, was to check the 2 tick boxes under the video tab. I have noticed a vast improvement in sound quality in this version compared with 4.5.

I installed this... thing on my laptop and I was trying to play some .mpeg files with it.
1. The video size was wrong
2. The quality was awful. The colors was bad. I changed from the options menu the display type to lcd, tv, etc with no luck.
I desized to uninstall this thing and now I have wrong, very dark colors on windows, and the movie files I play with WMP is so dark as hell. I suppose I have to reinstall Windows to get rid of this curse. STAY AWAY!!!

My Computor already has WinDVD 4.5 Platinum and "Microsoft DirectX 9.0a" and "Microsoft MSXML Parser".
But when I want to install this WinDVD 5.0, it tells me that my computor don't has DirectX8.1 and MSXML installed.
s*** !

Cannot give more than 1 star, because WinDVD5 is not working on my XPprof_SP1 machine. Right after clicking on "Remind me to register in 5 days" it quits, and it keeps on quitting right after starting.
I deinstalled the previous 4.5 before installation properly.
That shouldn't happen...

oudoulj,

Reviewing 4.5.28.94 (Jun 2, 2003)
This is the best DVD player around, no match!
The image quality is far far better then powerdvd, no excepetions! The sounds quality is crisp, the bass is deep as you can want it the dolby surrounds is amazing! This is NOt made to play DVDs from hard drive, so basing your opinion on this is nill of any consideration.
This program also ports a very good bookmarks ability and management. True it is not cheap, but if you are half serious about playing DVDs, give it a try, even if like me, you used powerdvd before, you won't go back after you try this one !
Reviewing 4.5.11.26 (Jan 12, 2003)
it's a pain in the a** to play dvd's ripped to a hard drive. since my movies are kept on my hard drive powerdvd is much more convenient for me.
Reviewing 4.5.11.26 (Jan 10, 2003)
link is down. you shouldn't link directly to the exe, for some obscure reason they always change the file location. what also annoys me is that if the intervideo video-dsp plugins are switched on in media player 9, then it always crashes when playing videos which require the MS mpeg4 decoder. when these plugins are unchecked, wmp 9 stops crashing and dvd playback still works fine, but I hope they fix the problem. the programme itself is uncomfortable and slow, eats all system resources, but the filters are great, one should just use wmp for playback, not the windvd programme. both use the same filters anyway, while wmp is faster and much more comfortable, you can move forward and back as if playing a normal mpeg or avi file
Reviewing 4.5.11.7 (Dec 14, 2002)
I just recently started using WinDVD, after using PowerDVD for over 6 months, and I must agree that WinDVD's picture quality is MUCH, MUCH better than PowerDVDs. And the sound quality is far superior too. However, WinDVD a couple of days ago said they were now going to be using Macrovision in their software. So if this is the first version of their software that uses Macrovision (so you can't make backup copies of your DVD's), then I wouldn't download it (use the previous version).

Reviewing 4.5.11.7 (Dec 13, 2002)
Kiriakos if you think the image quality is the same you obviously have either a very bad graphic card, monitor or combinaiton of both. This version is much better then any NVDvd or PowerDVD I have tried, and if you look there is a "full screen" on/off overide button, so look before you speak.
The sound is amazingly rich and deep. This is trully the best DVD software out there, I was using PowerDVD XP so far but this one just beats it specialy in the sound aspect.
Reviewing 4.5.11.7 (Dec 13, 2002)
I did not like it , the quality of the picture is not any superior than other software , and the sound support for audio cards as the known Aureal Vortex is missing completely. The Aureal 8830 ,or known as SQ2500 supports 4 speaker channels .. The PowerDVD4 5.1 ver operates fantastic , and i am asking ,why there is no support in WinDVD about it ??
Another problem that i notice is that you do not have full screen coverage , what ever setting is used ..
Well as long the PowerDVD4 5.1 works great for me , i will stop looking for other solutions , simply because there is no any better than that .
Reviewing 4.5.11.7 (Dec 13, 2002)
Excellent, as I'm sure everyone already knows.
One of the select few pieces of software that is worth the money.
Reviewing 4.5.11.7 (Dec 13, 2002)
Actualy it's old news :-), program entered scene before few days ... and it's damn good !
Specialy if u own one of latest video cards like ATI9700pro or NV30 :-) .
For me it properly detect all MMX capabilities of AthlonXP and my 9700pro cards .. TVOUT work nice ( small hint "Use one display VGA config, connect TV OUT cable, start DVD player, press Alt+F5, then enjoy DVD DX accelerated movie experience ) but if u use DUAL mode ( VGA + TVOUT ) u will get only software decoding of DVD ( on 9700pro with latest BIOS / driver /dx9RC2 ) ...

Oh and this is not the DVS version as I clearly stated in my article. That will be released on the 6th December.
Reviewing 4.0.11.187 (Nov 18, 2002)
Like PowerDVD 4.0 XP, WinDVD is excellent and my prefered of the two, as WinDVD 4.x runs a little smoother on my OLD 16 meg Voodoo 3 3000 Card under XP.
Must get that Geforce 4 4200 one of these days!
I haven't had a good play of this latest revision as yet so hope the annoying intermittant popping up of the control panel interface has finally been fixed on my XP pro install?
Reviewing 4.0.11.83 (Jul 25, 2002)
