Does the trick and it's free!
Still for power users look for Net Limiter, i think they have a free and a pro version... the pro enables you to set limits and grants on your connection, and program by program, firewall, etc.

I constantly test firewall and other apps, and i like the easy way zone alarm works and allow us to control and set up our preferences.
It´s a good firewall for the casual user, in it's free version but if you want to be in control of your connection in deed then my advice goes for the kerio free version.
Kerio is as easy to use and with more features.
with kerio you can visualize your data transfers, remote ip's, and when setting rules you can customize in and out ports and protocols for each app with advanced rules.
Not tha zone alarm free is not a good firewall, but for now Kerio free version is a better choice is you really want to be in control

Hi,
The cloud... some years ago the cloud had a name... netware, and the future was netpc...
but some cloudy days came for it... still the cloud is here, new flavours, new colours or rapsheet.
this said... wheter mac, win, or linux, (don´t forget mac and linux come from the same base..unix), the deal is compatability and interoperability. we coul compare it to ps3, wii or dead sega.
the ting is that each system tends to keep is marketshare or grow if possible, and as any other competitor tries to stay as closed "source" as possible so "the others" don´t come and use them up.
some years ago (many) apple granted licences to other companies to build and sell mac clones, as they saw the marketshare go under...
no one likes to loose ground.
Windows as a large base around the world and many apps to go with it and you can try to run it on all type of hardware combination, that´s what makes it so good. The range of apps and the hardware combinatons, so low cost machines or high end machines can be windows powered.
But it cames with a price to pay... so many apps, so many drivers, do the "wrong" choice and you 'll migth get some blue sreen or something else.
Mac, well mac is just like a playstation or a wii, you only can use mac produtcs, that are tested, and specially built thinking on a specific and narrow set of hardware, and yes it works! but your tied to it. and is more expensive.
thing is for the same price of a mac you can get a better hardware pc, then install the apps you want and need to get your job done.
(NOTE: don't mess around with windows, don't install that cool app you just saw on the net with millions of others, so you don't get the system altered and later on leaving it more "wealling" to crahs, coz this is the kind of thing you don´t do on a mac... coz you simply don't get the chance to do it, and yes there is other things, but this is the general idea).
then you can always use a virtual machine on any of the 2 to run the ohter inside...and so on
and you have your very one small cloud, or big (try some more vm inside lol)
still the file system and way that windows handles files leaves it more open, but more open to work or to be hacked (spyware, virus, etc), but nothing that a proper use don't solve, what i mean is that windows let's you do ting's, for god or not... mac lock's you down giving a false sense of freedom.
wait, take easy, i'm not defending one over the other, just trying to make a distanciated comment about both.
what i mean is that noe is better or worst, it only depends on what you want, if you wnt out of the box stability do do some things... go mac, if you want to trie "almost" everithing" out there go windows.
but if you care to experiment, want to lowr your cost along with it... well try linux
for instant one of the flavour i recomend would be some along a KDE interface for windows user or a Gnome for mac lovers, on top of that install compiz fusion and perhaps CairoDock, and you will see you pc or mac as you would never imagine (this kind of interface exists since 2005 (compiz was earlier called beryl)
example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iJjPuU-808
Then again there are another project to look for the future, ReactOS
About the apps, no matter what is the platform you can get a tool, specially in an MS flavour, of course there are some one like better and others don't, or because the interface or other issue.
so in the end it cames to a personal taste, and to what each one usually does and is "confortable", the much each one is willing to trie other things and how much it can spend or is willing to.
Then the cloud... just tried the chromeOS beta... and... it as a long way to go, still, comes again to the netpc model, and i can tell you i don´t want it as it show's for personal day to day use.
no matter if i use A, B or C (windows, mac or a linux flavour), i want to save my files, want to have my one thing's not all in the cloud.
The cloud is a good thing to shared processing, hosting and so on.
I'm not saying i won't use cloud system's shure i do and i like but not what google is presenting.
For those curious install virtualbox (opensource) in your mac, windows or linux and give a test drive to the other system's, don't just say no, trie it first!
windows and mac theres no mistake, linux recomend Kubuntu 9.10+compiz fusion+CairoDock, ReactOS can be found on its one domain or sourceforge, and ChromeOS welll, just do what o always do and can do to find them all... google for it!

There are already on the market 3g routers, and iptv (i have it - portugal), so sonner or latter they will be set top boxes to, and i'm shure that even mobile phones and PDA's, in the next year's w'ill have a video out as well as the audio in present models... them just plug it in the closest giant wide sreen... and there you go!
As for the bandwith... the more the better!!! the 4G goal of a minimum 100MBbts while in movent and a 1Gbbts stoped...who doesn´t wish that!!!

Well i use PDA's as phones for since the first hipack came out with gsm/gprs, and i'm currntly with a Qtek 2020i (HTC) and if tou want a device that does it all... then you got to get one, and the knew ones with keyboard, and UMTS connection... ok they are smaller phones, and if u just want to phone... ok...it's your choice.... my advice... get one, install skype you favorite IM or all, and you can even get low cost calls !!!
(if everyone would do that, that would be even better), of course u got to get a good ISP plan ( i got 10GB month plus happy hour).
Plus, u get Mp3 player, portable storage (sd) cam, video cam,(ok lower resolutions...) Internet, email, GPS, and all the apps u want, etc, etc...oh yeah!!! And phone!
About breakin it... well i've broken one already, but it fall down many times before the day it cracked... but still, there is a model that folds up like a pc...But acidents happen!

let's sue them!
spyware, adware and plus, no real uninstall option, and bad faith in their programs, and in the way they are present (or not) to the "inocent" user!
