Win7codecs is an audio and video codec package for Windows 7. The installer will automatically remove most other popular codec releases from your computer before installing this concise yet comprehensive package. You won't need to make any adjustments or tweaks to enjoy your media content immediately. Windows Media Player and Media Center will instantly recognize all your files as playable.

It does not contain a media player and it does not associate file-types. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player, limited only by the players' capabilities, to play all movies and video clips. Streaming video is supported in several formats in all popular web browsers. Users of the Win7codecs have the ability to choose what is installed and where to install it using the public redistributable. After installation you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. You can also re-add the removed items at any time.

I liked it until I found out the subtitle problem with MPC, there was no way to get it to work. And why do they optimize their settings to work with WMP anyway? Who uses that anymore? Almost all professionals use MPC.
So until they find a solution for subtitle in MPC I'm sticking to K lite Codec

Am probably like many users of this software. Used to use K-lite codec pack, had few problems with it, however, got Win7, and tried this codec pack on a whim. At this time, have had zero issues with compatibility, and plays all my file formats (divx, xvid, etc) using Windows Media player. Works for me!

I was a k-lite fan for a long time, but since I use this pack in win7 I feel more comfortable, this is more customizable, more stable and also easier settings, less conflict and also play more formats in fact! K-Lite mega pack says cover many format, but this win7codec pack is playing every format better with less trouble... Thanks Shark007!

Works great here, got these and the x64 ones. No problem's on Windows 7 64-bit. Only using it to have WMP12 64-bit to be default player and to play .mkv files. Everything else is set to microsoft default.

I was impressed with Shark's ability and commitment with the creation of the Vista Codec Package and now that I've switched to using Windows 7, I am in total disbelief at how well he has taken on the task of supplying codecs to this new operating system. WTG SHARK !

As stated on his homesite, he does not interfere with the native decoding supplied by Microsoft, and still enables MediaCenter to play everything I have.
    Very nice work.

frankwick, this doesnt replace any builtin codecs supplied by the operating system. Based on the simple fact that you ask "Why do I need this in Win7?" means that you do not need it.

Giving this the 4* avg rating so I won't skew the votes with my question................ Why do I need this in Win7? Outside of Ogg or some other obscure codec, the built-in codecs for Wi n7 seem very good. Can someone enlighten me why I need to replace the built-in codecs?

Jeremy; If you have no need for a calculator, would you write a review for it?
Also, why rate a product that has no obvious value to you at 3?
Wouldn't the products lack of providing anything useful to you warrent a 1?
Do you understand the concept of a 'review'?

A review requires the opinion of someone that unserstands the product provided
and is capable of testing that software's ability to do what its developer says it can do.

While Windows 7 allows DirectShow Codecs, those is not the preferred Codecs anymore. Windows 7 now supports Windows Media Foundations Codecs and Directshow Codecs are only an intermediary solution.

As always, be weary of Codec Packs as they are known to break stuff. You're better off just installing ffdshow which lets you play anything you throw at it.

for me missing are simply encoders like h264, DivX or Xvid...
and DivX decoder (for files encoded by DivX) - provide sometimes better error resilience and postprocessing than Xvid...

good development with dev team attention to problems and updates...

P.S. Why can it be only one pack from XP, Vista and 7 like KLCP which I'm using now ?

@ Shark007- KLCP is not crap, I dont have any problems with this pack, when I started to use it...
both pack are good if you know what you want to install, not olny click "NEXT" & "NEXT", like I said in other comment...
you can easy install any s*** like trojan or virus on your PC...

@ the poorly informed person typing below me

Some people like to use Windows Media Player.
Others happen to like Media Center.
Yet even more prefer using Media Player Classic.(or any other player)
Well I have to inform you, the intent of this release is these people.

    NOT YOU.

The whole idea is to not be restricted to a using only a certain player. And your google search for codec issues stems from 10+ yrs of K-Lite crap people have been installing on thier systems. Its actually my insperation to create a pack that didnt scew up your system. And what exactly does Premier have to do with anything? Those that can afford the $800 pricetag are probably not using a FREE codec solution. And now I just went and wasted more of my FREE time having a pointless discussion with a closed mind.

Using something like mplayer or vlc is much better, codecs are built in, there is no registered dll hell with codecs packs, which if you do a simple google search you will see the problems they can cause. If I were to rely on your codec pack for adobe premier it would crash, simple as that. Check it out if you don't believe me.

I still haven't come across a media file I can't play in the Windows 7 beta. I've added VLC because WMP is prone to crashing, but all my video files of varying formats seem to play just fine.

Codec packs like this though are great for the uninformed or the lazy. Like most codec packs though, this one doesn't uninstall cleanly either. :P

This codec pack is excellent. It does what it needs to do very well and is highly flexible.

I help many people to fix their computers and always recommend this pack when my customers have trouble playing videos. I frequently get e-mails from very satisfied users thanking me for giving that recommendation.

The author is very knowledgeable and always helpful with providing a fix in case of problems. If you got a problem, go to the MSFN support forums and you will get a solution very quickly.

    I highly recommend this pack.

To those experiencing corrupted M2TS playback after installing 1.0 final
The corruption is caused by the installation of other codecpacks and I cannot undo what they have done. You will need to start with a clean install of Windows 7 to fully enjoy what this codec package can do for you.

CodecPack and Kylde are a couple of a$$ hats. When it comes to reviewing software is it really necessary to 1 star software that works as advertised (and quite well I might add)? I've been using this for XP AND VISTA for dozens of people and have NEVER had any issues that someone with more than 3 braincells couldn't figure out. Thanks Shark007 for providing this excellent FREE software! Everyone that wants to pimp there own preferred codec should just give positive reviews to THAT software leave the peanut gallery comments to themselves.

    Reviewing 1.0 Beta (Jan 22, 2009)

The author doesn't seem to have a clue what he is doing. There is no need to make separate packs for XP/Vista/Seven. A proper codec pack should work on all three of them. A smartly written installer can adjust itself and its actions based on the OS.

This is just a scam to attract more n00b users with a familiar sounding name.

Get the K-Lite Codec Pack instead. That is more advanced and fully compatible with Windows 7 and below.
