DVD Shrink is software to backup DVD disks. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice to make a backup copy of any DVD video disk. The output from DVD Shrink is saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn to a DVD-R using separate burning software, such as the software provided with your DVD-R drive.

@swexpert - As far as I can see the 2012 version of DVD Shrink is a commercial product, priced at $28.95 (USD). Would be willing to pay that amount if the product was really that much better. Is it?

Its a old app compared with new ones that are out today. But it does what it should do and does it perfect. If you find a DVD it can't backup. Use DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip to the hard drive then use this program on the output files and you will be good to go.

Awesome program but losing its edge as it has been discontinued. DVDFab decrypter is better.

linkdup: do not use this excellent piece of software for decrypting *your original* DVD resources for backups.
Use it just to "put them on DVD5". As it has the best compresion algorithm and picture results (using deep analyze + error compensation - sharp) it'll be the main "shrinking" app for many years to come (it is still better than Nero Recode for me).
For decrypting, use DVD Fab Platinum or Express version which is free. It is hassle free app, you put DVD on hard disk, and shrink it with shrink...great ;)

Hi to all!! I'm a newbie to everything (I'm from the dinosaur age BEFORE computers)and have recently used this program. Have not had any trouble with it in windows or linux, although in linux it doesnt like to copy the subtitles or the menus...but ultimately the movie is what I am after, so I'm not really upset about that. Am looking forward to newer versions and am hoping there will soon be one specifically for linux thanks all!! And to those of you who are feeling negatively towards each other...there seems to be no need to be brutal here...just have fun!!

Too bad they closed the dvdshrink.org website. The recording co.'s have been hammering on these guys that make decrypting software. Plus the author is working for Nero for about a year now. Nero's "Recode", which is part of "NeroVision Express", is the author's replacement for DVDShrink. Only drawback, "Recode" does not do any decrypting like DVDShrink. You have to use other decrypting software, like DVDFab Decrypter, AnyDVD, DVD Region+CSS Free, DVD Decrypter, DVD43, etc.
I use DVDShrink usually when I need to split a large (DVD9) DVD to two DVD5's, using the start/end chapter feature.

Tho' badly in need of an update (tho' I haven't heard of any problems with "bad" sector protections...), DVD Shrink is an excellent newbie product. Even for the more experienced, 'Shrink provides a free and easily used reauthoring function, as well as it's rights-destruction removal technology (euphemistically called by industry hacks "content protection") and compression tool.
In fact, for someone who wishes to mainly to rip the "main movie" and leave all the fluff behind (and 90% of "bonus" material should stay in the studio marketing dept's vaults whence it came), Shrink is hard to beat. Especially the price. Shrink also provides excellent error correction for films that need to be compressed.
WARNING FOR HDTV OWNERS: split to two disks if compression needed is more than 15%; you'll definitely see the difference if you do!
As for worries about Blu-Ray...the only sets available are in Japan and cost $US 5,000! ALSO: all Blu-Ray players (or HD) will have to be backward compatible with "regular" DVDs. So CSS and the need to protect our rights from it will continue into the future.
Anyone saying otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.
As for DL disks, these are probably headed for the scrap heap anyway. Even if they don't, DVDecrypter already handles DL disks; no reason to think the functionality can't be added to Shrink. But at US$8 each, who needs DLs when DVD5 are as low as US$0.40!?!?!
Reviewing 3.2.0.15 (Mar 21, 2005)
The answer to my prayers. I just used DVD Shrink to burn a 7 gig movie onto a 4.7 gig DVD. You have to use this program with Nero 6, I went to bed and after my DVD was burnt DVD Shrink shut my computer down for me. Now that's a program. DVD Decrypt is another must have and you will not need any other programs for ripping and burning DVDs.

There are two programs that can be used to backup a DVD: DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.
They are both WONDERFUL, both freeware, both easy to use, and neither of them is bloatware.
Which one do you need? I would say both of them.
DVD Shrink is better, since it allows you to select what to keep and what to discard (e.g. unused languages, ugly extras etc.)
DVD Decrypter has a better error handling: if the DVD is scratched, you will need it.

for anyone who is having a problem with dvd shrink skipping or jittering at the end of there movies. a easy fix is to run the main movie once through dvd shrink and keep the files on you hard drive. after that is done run the files though dvd shrink. copy the full disk just remove one or two subtiles. this makes the disk smaller than the 4.7g but keeps the same quality as if you were to burn it the first time. when you make the disc smaller it will not jitter. or another fix is to use a dvd+r. well thanks. this is a great program. cheers to the author.

The Albanian Ripper here again. I am using DVD Shrink since version 1.3 and i'm working on a machine Pentium 3, 500 MHz with 384 MB of RAM. The program works fine and i ripped more than 170 DVDs already. The only problem is some error message on 3 or 4 DVDs till now which says "cyclic redundancy check". I know it must be from the scratches or the dust on the surface but i had that error even on a brand new dvd, "The Terminator". Can the creator of this program make DVDShrink pass over that step?
Anyway, I'm giving 5 Stars 'cuz it's free, runing just fine and it makes everything in 2 or 3 steps.

One of the most useful (and user friendly) freeware DVD apps out there. And since 321Studios recently lost in court, even more of a reason to try it!
To those complaining about it not working on their machine - it is your machine that is the issue.
Reviewing 3.1.7 Beta 3 (Mar 1, 2004)
after reading some of the negative reviews for this program I was hesitant about trying it. I tried it a while back and I must say that it works great. I've used it to make 1 disc backups of DVD movies that even DVD X Copy had problems with. it's not perfect, and sometimes it messes up on the menus but who cares. most of the time when I make a backup copy all I want is the movie itself and none of the other stuff.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars, even with problems I mentioned. The reason for this is that it is freeware, and should not be judged the same as commercial software. Also to the guy who keeps complaining about this software crashing on him and blaming it instead of his system. I'm sorry it's crashing on your Pentium 4 Blah Blah Blah system, but it works just fine on my old AMD Duron 900 MHz system. You might want to test all of your components individually and then try using it again. Most times when you get that type of error it is because of either your memory or your video card (or the video card drivers).
Good luck fixing it.

Just because you claim to have built machines for 20 years does NOT mean you know what you are doing since you CLEARLY have no idea where to start looking for the problem. You are aparrently content to simply BLAME the software instead of troubleshooting the hardware / driver / software mix you are dealing with using structured problem solving techniques ("back to basics and work from there") and that's your right - but it certainly doesn't bespeak 20 years of experience with PCs or any other computer system. You say the software works well on your son's machine and that it's a machine specific problem and I wholeheartedly concur - the problem resides squarely between the keyboard and the chair of that machine. Might I suggest that you have your son examine the problem - by all counts (not the least of which your own) he's likely to actually know what he is doing. Software works fine here - it's not a "one stop deal" like DVD Xcopy Platinum which I own (and recommend to users like yourself) but it works well.

One of my sons is using this program for a long time, but on my machine it crashes, no matter what. That's why I asked YOU for some ideas. Wow! I tried to use Nero's Recode 2 but then there's all these separate plugins to enable DVD burning, multichannel audio.. bah. So I took this, basically the same program, put Amer.Wedding in my DVD reader, an old blank Pioneer DVD-RW in the burner (both el cheapo drives in an eMachines T2625!), analyzed, disabled other languages and a few menu things to get better video quality. Since I was leaving I told it to do deep analysis or something like that to improve quality, and hit Backup DVD. Went home..
Checked from home a few hours later. "DVD copy completed in 2 hours 15 minutes"... Never had to run Nero manually or anything. Came in today, the DVD was ready and the menus even work somehow (seem to be more than just video clips to me!!) Absolutely amazing. Played it on a mid-level component Sony DVD player and looked quite good (hard to assess on a 13" TV. LOL)
A side note: Also had to use AnyDVD and have it running in BG or it would refuse to copy this movie. ;)

This is indeed a great little program. So needless to say. Everyone please pay no attention to my first rating. This is a 5 star product
Reviewing 3.1.3 (Jan 19, 2004)
If u want to make a fast & relatively good quality dvd9 to 5 backup, then this is a pretty good program. The manual quality selection of every chapter/vob is a nice alternative if u don't want to "deep scan" the dvd. And as for Horseman53: much like alot of decrypting programs, its always useful to play the dvd in a regular software dvd player eg. powerdvd and such. After it's run through such a program, the dvd encryption key is already found and thus dvdshrink (and any other decrypt program) will find it alot easier to encrypt the dvd.
Reviewing 3.1.3 (Jan 19, 2004)
Awesome program made even more so by the fact it's freeware and the recent Nero burning integration. Would give it 6/5 if possible.
Reviewing 3.1.2 (Jan 16, 2004)
this is the best of 4 programs i've tried thoroughly. the only problem is that dvd-lab and TMPG DVD Author do not recognize the audio that is created.
Reviewing 3.1.2 (Jan 14, 2004)
Fine tool, thanks that the author distribute it as FREEWAE
Reviewing 3.1.2 (Jan 14, 2004)
DVDShrink is THE greatest piece of FREEWARE ever created. The author deserves a Nobel prize for his contributions to society. I still use the 1.xx version that is pictured here. AAAAA+++++
Reviewing 3.1.1 (Jan 12, 2004)
Still a LOT of confirmed bugs in this version. I'm going to wait a few more versions until I use it consistantly. 3.0 Beta 5 is tride and true. Also, I dont see anything that says 3.1 offers any quality increase over previous versions.
Reviewing 3.1.1 (Jan 11, 2004)
After playing with IC8, Shrink 2.3 and shrink 3.1, I must say shrink 3.1 wins hands on (Deep Analisys rules). What IC 8 does best is hang and reboot my pc ! Do not buy this s*** (IC 8), get DVD Shrink right now ...
Reviewing 3.1.1 (Jan 11, 2004)
Simply first-rate. I'd like to give it a six. Get's better and better.
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
Sorry Bh420 , but DVD Shrink does not burn DVD's . Take a closer look it is useing nero for the burn :) And that is only a new adition ...
BTW this has a lot more power than clone DVD
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
This is without a doubt, one of the best freeware programs I can think of. It's easy to use by anyone, has a small memory footprint and offers some powerful options to reducing a DVD from two layers (9gb) down to one layer (4.5gb).
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
I've been copying my DVD's for a while now and have tried just about every method of doing so that there is. Different programs reign in their own groups, and this is one of them. The fact that it IS indeed Freeware is a caveat that cannot be ignored. For shrinking files to burnable size, it's as good as any. So far, none of the other programs out there can rip/transcode/burn as an all in one (except dvdxcopy which sux HARSHLY due to the nag screens that it incorporates... another review, another time). the best method I've found is AnyDVD in the background, CloneDVD for total control of the end result and the burn too. With AnyDVD in the background, it makes CloneDVD an all in one. In any case, this one's great for the rookies. It's worthy.
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
The best just got better...
Absolutly awesome, best software around for the task, and freeware too, what more could anyone want???
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
Although I'm a new to dvd writing/burning - this programme
seems awesome! and freeware - What a find!!!
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
I've just updated from v2.3. Works fine as same as the old release 2.3.
A must have to compress DVD on a single target.
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
Excellent software. Nothing else like this for free! Get while it's still free and available. Buggernuts 3 rating is a reflection of his indadequate PC skills and inability to configure his own firewall, not on the quality of the software.
Reviewing 3.1 (Jan 10, 2004)
thats funny you should say that dude when dvd shrink finishes shrinking the dvd it even burns the the dvd for me this software kicks a$$
does it on both my lite-n LDW-401s and lite-on LDW-411s
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Jan 4, 2004)
Deep scan on startup would be a great addition! I think that might be the only thing missing, this program is STUNNING. All others should just give up, DVD Shrink reigns supreme.
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Dec 4, 2003)
Very good, and its free. I wish you could enable deep scan on startup so it doesnt waist time.
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Nov 30, 2003)
Excellent! I have looked at lots of different solutions(almost bought dvdxcopy),dvd shrink is easily the best!
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Sep 8, 2003)
I think DVD Shrink is awesome! Such impressive software for free! I am having trouble getting it off my hard drive onto a DVD that will play in a DVD player. I did a data copy with my DVD+RW Burner software that came with the DVD burner (no video option just data or audio). It wouldn't play back on a DVD player. Any suggestions for software that will let me take DVD Shrink files and burn them onto a DVD? I'm out of work, so a "freeware" or cheap "shareware" product would be great. Thanks in advace for any comments! :)
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Aug 22, 2003)
Wow, no other words.
I was trying to make one myself, but time....
Well done!!
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Aug 21, 2003)
the best dvd backup tool, with the best re-author tool i've seen, and extremly easy to use.
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Aug 20, 2003)
Very good and nice tool - Congratulation to the author. Thx that we pupils can use it as FREEWARE !!!. Nice, better than ClonDVD, because it can work with "scrambled" DVD's.
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 5 (Aug 20, 2003)
i honestly dont know what i would do with out this program its the best 400k of data that money cant buy! its fast efficent user friendly and has all the options i wanted and didnt find in other programs and the scary part is that its just getting better... i started with 1.03 and have seen steady improvement each new major release casues my jaw to go slack. Now with DVD shrink 3 and the manual slider bars for compression rates i find myself lacking the words needed to convey how great it is download it!
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 4 (Aug 14, 2003)
Perhaps the author should update the screenshot since it doesnt look like that anymore? Just a thought. This program rocks, so much better than Dvdxcopy and is FREE
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 3 (Aug 11, 2003)
this program is only ^_^ P E R F E C T !!!
my 5 thumbs up! get it?
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 3 (Aug 11, 2003)
Excellent program!!
By the way buggernuts, in future I suggest you rate the program for what it does and not your opinion of the Internet. As the review page says "keep it on topic".

Reviewing 3.0 Beta 3 (Aug 11, 2003)
I can only follow the predecessors! - Super tool, thx for this freeware (I'm a student).
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 3 (Aug 10, 2003)
Having just downloaded and used DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 3, I can say that, without a doubt, this is a excellent program that has gotten even better. While version 2.3 was great, it was complicated enough that the first time I used it, I had to go to the help file to figure out how to properly use the program. While 3.0 beta 3 still can't be used by someone who hasn't used the program before without trial and error, the most difficult tasks are now automatically done.
When I first encountered DVD Shrink, then in version 2.0, I had already purchased and used DVD X Copy in order to back up my DVDs. DVD X Copy is good software and is fairly easy to use, and it does it all. Not only does it "rip" a DVD to your hard drive, it will copy the DVD to a DVD+R or DVD-R. It's disadvantage is that in order to copy most single DVDs, you must copy to 2 DVDs. This is because most commercial DVDs have more that 4.7 GB of material, some almost double that figure. But DVD Shrink compresses the data on commercial DVDs to fit onto 1 4.7 GB DVD. You would think that this shrinking the files would cause the new DVD to look bad on your television. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Unless you use a super large screen TV, or are exceptionally aware of video quality, you won't be able to tell the difference. But DVD Shrink also has a disadvantage when compared to DVD X Copy. The disadvantage? "Shrink" only rips the DVD. You must use Nero's Burning Rom (5.5 or 6) or Roxio's EZ CD (5 or 6, preferably 6)to burn the copy. But even if you don't know how to do that, it is easily learned.
My opinion ... if you copy DVD Movies (for backup purposes only :o), you should have DVD Shrink 2.3 or better.
DVD Shrink is freeware: http://www.dvdshrink.org/
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 3 (Aug 10, 2003)
Awsome ,never tried this one untill now. You sure can forget clonedvd and dvdxcopy this does it all and better.
Rhis is a 10 IMO :)
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 1 (Aug 10, 2003)
Awesome program, the 3.0 has sone nice improvements on what is already an excellent program.
It seems buggernuts was reviewing his browser and security settings, not the actual program. Ignore his comments, this is a 5.0 program. (perhaps he is trying to sell a competing product).
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 1 (Aug 10, 2003)
Excellent program. It's just too bad I stumbled upon it after purchasing DVD X Copy....ouch. DVD Shrink is first class software, and it's free. No reason for anything less than 4 or 5 stars. And why would someone give a poor software review because his firewall isn't configured correctly...? Did I miss a meeting?
Reviewing 3.0 Beta 1 (Aug 10, 2003)
This is by far the best software for dvd copying, and for the person who likes to whine about privacy settings, mine works fine, no firewall disabling, no adjusting settings, no nothing. Just because you dont know how to configure your system doesnt mean you should rate software lower
Reviewing 2.30 (Jul 20, 2003)
BEST dvd software in the world!!!! move out the way DVD X copy..so far it has worked on every single DVD i have put it to..flawlessly. I got tired of wasting an extra DVD with DVD X copy..
Reviewing 2.30 (Jul 16, 2003)
buggernuts, don't insult this website or DVD shrinks web site for not being able to download this great program...I't your fault you can't download it... And by the way, the rating is for the program not the web site so get over it, and btw I use this program alot and it has never stuffed up... Barely any loss of quality and great features...Just as good as DVD dcrypter :)
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 22, 2003)
I have downloaded each upgrade as it appears and have yet to run into even a minor problem. While "B" hides behind his firewall I'm making DVDs with perhaps the slickest software on the planet. Even if you do not have a DVD burner, get this program and hold own to it because you will be getting one soon.
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 20, 2003)
Hey "B" rate the program not the download sites okay?
I burnt my first 2 DVD's using DVD Shrink and Nero Express. Nero Express would not burn it until I shrunk it via DVD Shrink because it was 7.5GB. I backed up Babylon 5 Season 2 DVD 1&2. DVD Shrink was perfect in that I was able to keep the DVD original and reduce it to a single DVD and only lose a small amount of quality. This is for DVD Shrink 2.0 >>>>>
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 17, 2003)
Quite honestly, I don't care whether I mess up the rating. I'm sick of sites that require me to disable my firewall just to download a program. For that reason alone, I felt there was good cause to NOT give it a 5 rating.
Oh ... by the way ... I did go to the creators website ... before I posted ... and EVERY link was dead or required me to change my privacy settings.
Don't like my commments? Too bad .... ignore them. I review things as I see them ... not just to please the masses.
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 16, 2003)
This is an awesome program. Thanks for screwing up the 5.0 rating buggernuts!!!!!!!
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 16, 2003)
@buggernuts
You know there is such thing as search engine.
Or you could just press dvd homepage link in the upper right side of the screen and choose another mirror from the official site.
btw the betanews link doesn't work because they directly leeching it from doom9 site.
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 15, 2003)
Excellent piece of free software. Blows all the pay software out of the water. If you like it, and wanna ensure it stays free and actively developed, send the author a small donation by PayPal...
Reviewing 2.30 (Jun 15, 2003)
All i have to say is AMAZING! Why are all the best programs free? screw DVDxCopy this one is better by far & is free... whoever buys dvdxcopy is getting scammed... this is where the real GOODNESS is! keep it up!!! sweet!
Reviewing 2.20 (Jun 13, 2003)
Thx an the authors, that they distribute as FREEWARE. SO I can use it for my private (I'm a student at a highschool). Super work - a lot of thanks !!
Reviewing 2.00 (Jun 6, 2003)
I have tried a number of free programs for making backup copies of my DVDs and found them all complicated and ended up making more coasters than DVDs. With DVD Shrink, I have yet to trash a DVD. This program is E-A-S-Y to use and very fast. I was just about to shell out some mad jack for a DVD copy program and found this just in the nick of time. DVD Shrink is the most powerful and easy to use program I have found in its class. At last, the search is over!
Reviewing 2.00 (Jun 6, 2003)
Works great! Very easy to understand interface and worked without a glitch. Just bought DVD-XCOPY last week, but believe I like this progrma better in many ways...
