The best among PDF printers that I have tested. It never distorted a page, even in cases where other PDF printers (including some non-free ones) failed to do a good job.

Beware however, to use custom installation and to choose what to install as it comes with optional stuff that many people do not need, including offers from advertisers that are irrelevant for its task.

The PDF Architect program that comes with it, and which is also freeware and developed by the same developer, may or may not be useful for you. Up to the recent version, there was no option to customize its installation, but this has been fixed in version 1.7, and you may now choose not to install it, or as I chose - to install it but with no plugins that integrate it with other programs.

    Reviewing 1.6.2 (Jan 16, 2013)

First, it does what it says it will do. I prints to PDF.
Second, it does what it doesn't say it will do, and that is that it bundles additional software. Yes, you can decline the install of part of the crapware that it comes loaded with, but then it forces the install of Adware in the form of PDF Architect, which will also attempt to integrate it into the browser. While some, like the reviewer before me, will say "hey that's great and this is a terrific program", others like myself and the technologically inclined that he's raving against, would rather not have some program take liberties with a system when all we were looking for in the first place is a simple printer driver that will print to pdf file.

For this reason, middle of the road marks with a recommendation that you seek something else like Bullzip PDF printer.

Developers... get a clue. Let people know your stuff is out there, but don't force feed it.

I'm amazed at the latest comments. People here are supposed to be geeks in some way. I can't believe that you're crying about a checkmark or a "decline" button. Seriously, are you THAT short-minded? The program itself is very good and now they even offer a light version of an Acrobat-like app for free. Yes there's adware THAT CAN BE AVOIDED. I understand that my clients CANNOT read through the several NEXT > NEXT > NEXT install dialogs but YOU?

This is still crapware! Should be rated as "0" but its not available. Either the developer does not read comments about his product or (and most likely) does not care what we think. Complaints of "crapware" have been around for several years. Why does FileForum continue to list such software?

This used to be THE BEST PDF printer (IMHO) then the developer started including "crapware". I have been critical of this practice in the past, even offering to pay for a "clean" version. I checked the products website with this new release and tried the download. The download is an ".exe" file and there is no indication that the "crapware" has been removed so I cancelled the download and continue to use dopdf (the NEW BEST PDF printer) - http://www.dopdf.com/

I am using also Pdf creator for a long time and I am very pleased of the program.
Also i have recently installed version 0.9.7 of the software with the browser toolbar component.
I think that this toolbar it is very useful to search anything, on yahoo, ebay and amazon.
It gives the opportunity to connect to ebay website automaticall that from my point of view is very good because I am an ebay client.
Having less free time, this toolbar is giving me the opportunity to quickly access ebay, amazon and to seek necessary information on yahoo search.
Like other search toolbars, web page image results are visable in a search tray for easy review of not only the visual images of the site but also the written headlines.
This is not spyware or adware.

It does bundle an addon/toolbar (spyware?), but I unticked the option suring the install and it installed cleanly. It also worked well on on the web page I tried.
I take one point out because of the bundled addon/toolbar, but only one because unselecting it does a clean install. I think I'm being generous, so consider this a 3.5 rounded up!

This should be considered adware and the intentionally misleading way to opt out... (Even if you dont agree to adding Yahoo search to the toolbar (originally i thought it was an option to add the toolbar WITH yahoo search), it is STILL autoselected and enabled during installation unless you explicitly uncheck it from installing.. Just telling people this is NOT GOOD ENOUGH)....

This is particularly egregarious behavior for an OSS app, if one doee not opt for the toolbar, one should NOT have it try to insert itself in the install tree and have to manually unselect it AS WELL

This is an OPEN SOURCE APP.... SHAME ON YOU for trying to make a profit at the expense of users privacy AND security.

Shame. I always liked this app.....but like a relationship with baggage, the baggage has got to go, or it will permanently be uninstalled never to be seen again.

If your that desprate for income, at least use a known "safe" toolbar from one of the major players with predictable behavior (Google/MSN/etc) and not some piece of obscure spyware that redirects your serches through itself

From the notes located at sourceforge:
    Known issues:
    - Only basic Vista support.
    - No hyperlinks possible (Hyperlinks for MS Word are possible with the combination of PDF-T-Maker and PDFCreator.)

I still give it a 5 because it does its job quite well on XP. Support for Vista (full) is on its way, be patient.

It is not true that it doesn't produce standard compliant PDF code, all depends of the used specification. Also, PDF is produced by Ghostscript 8.61, not PDFCreator itself.

At http://www.pdfforge.org/node/1058 there is an announcement about a solution hunt under Vista with a $150 bounty. If you want to help and you're a programmer then have a look there.

Then again, maybe Adobe is to blame for that (bad documentation, in practice a closed format, etc).

    I hope it'll improve.

We need an open version or alternative to the Adobe hegemony.

It's just silly that Adobe has a complete business around a closed/proprietary file format.

Autocad used to have that, so did Microsoft (with Office/excel/ppt).

Both have lost/given up on it, because it's not in the best interest of the consumer.

It can't compare to Adobe products, but then it is free. It's worth the rating.

I tested this using Word, IE7 and a couple other programs. Basically, if this does the job then why pay for something else? And if it doesn't there are other products such PDF Exchange which might do a better job.

I'm beta-testing Office 2007 and I can save as PDF right from Word (save as "PDF or XPS") but due to licensing issues Adobe is forcing Microsoft to remove it. Office 2007 is starting to use Markup language which I doubt freeware is likely to convert any time soon, however you can convert it back to .DOC and then print to PDF.
I think there's too many formats for documents, video and audio but what are you going to do? (Whatever happened to .txt files, VHS video and vinyl records?)

There is also a Toolbar for the Internet Explorer, which allows to create PDFs of the websites with a single click.

The COM Interface has been anhanced as well as some small bugs have been fixed.

Having the Toolbar brought us some trouble with the MSI Installer. It is not flexible enough for our needs, so we decided that there is no MSI package at the moment. But we can provide anyone interested (like System Administrators) a package with our without the Toolbar if it is required for some purpose as deploying it in an Active Directory."

    Good work!

edit: server interface corrupted after 5 minutes of use, and I couldn't get to work right. Guess we'll just install locally through script.

In my experience it has performed flawlessly, has many high-end features, and costs absolutely nothing to use. Two thumbs up to it's creators!

Nice piece of freeware continues to improve, but don't get carried away with exaggerations about the cost of Adobe Acrobat. Freeware like PDFCreator is not comparable to Acrobat Professional or even Acrobat Standard. The proper comparison would be to Acrobat Elements, which currently sells for about $27 (street price for retail SKU; can be even lower for corporate volume licensing).

If your needs are covered by freeware, go for it. But don't pretend that it saves you hundreds of dollars when it really only saves one week's worth of Starbucks coffee.

And awesome it is! I would give it a 10/10 if I could! I am running it on a PIII/Win98SE/256M platform and it is *very* fast. I have used of over several beta versions and, while reasonably happy with it, I have not been entirely satisfied. But now, with version 0.9.0, the author has really got it right! I can now send fully formatted WordPerfect 2000 and Word 2000 documents, etc., to a few friends of mine, with even older computers than mine, without any fancy word processing programs on them but who do, at my insistence, have Foxit PDF Reader (another gem!) on their small hard drives.

    Two real gems!

I have Adobe, PDFCreator and OpenOffice.
Adobe is complex, too many options.
PDFCreator is a very good pdf writer. Best free one I have encoutered. I have used it for 2+ years
spiked: Are you giving 4 points for application or for the download link in Betanews? To have a single shot I would choose also the same version as Betanews use.
OpenOffice includes good embedded pdf writer.
More and more I found myself using OpenOffice. It is simple and output is good.

    Reviewing 0.8.1 RC9 Beta (Sep 29, 2005)

Unfortunately, this is just a front-end for Ghostscript and Redmon, which have both been around for years. Although PDFCreator makes setup and usage of these components easy for end-users, they are still not 100% free in the sense of being unrestricted. The PDFCreator download linked from this page on BetaNews is a version covered under AFPL (Aladdin Free Public License) which is NOT an Open Source license. If you want the true Open Source version of PDFCreator, you must go to the PDFCreator project page on SourceForge and download the GPL version which contains a slightly older GS engine.

All my PDF files has the free mark of PDFCreator. Superb software! YES you can choose between AFPL or GPL (thanks for explanation above by Spiked). The "just front-end" that makes PDFCreator to work, in my opinion, very well is still the best free alternative to the excellent, but expensive, Adobe Acrobat!

Kudos for putting out a reasonable free PDF creator.

The the immature fool who thinks Betanews staff are 'tards all I can say is it takes an even bigger one to know one :P Sounds childish? It should - that is how the original comment sounded too.

Betanews staff does not post these - they are submitted by people like us.

To the guy who said BetaNews staff are ret***s: BetaNews is an important site with good people behind it. If you are familiar with its past troubles you will know that many BetaNews users are also very keen supporters of the site. Even if Betanews did slip up, we are all Human and we all make mistakes sometimes.
On to the software: This version of PDFCreator is working very well on my PC. PDF is a very useful way to distribute documents, but Adobe is charging far too much for the PDF-making part of the package. PDFCreator looks like a very cost-effective alternative.

    EXCELLENT software.

It integrates as a printer in any program...its awesome.

Its like Microsoft Office Document Imaging for MS Office 2003, except it spits out a filetype that any computer with a PDF reader can read (where as the Document Imaging's TIFF/MDI files can ONLY be read by Microsoft Office Document Imaging for MS Office 2003...meaning the computer MUST have MS Office 2003 installed).

    AND it supports color...

OpenOffice' PDF creating capability is cool, but severely limited in that graphics images are downsized to a low resolution, unfit for printing.

OO.o 2.0 is supposed to remedy this, but until then it's PDF creation capability is OK but far from adequate.

As for this thing, I just hope they look at FinePrint PDF Creator. Its commercial but has a lot of cool features that might inspire...

I was using PrimoPDF before. When I tried PDF Creator, I noticed that all of the pdf files are about 3/4 the size of PrimoPDF. The automatic compression is great!

As an open source, I sure hope that they will develop the program so that I can create hyperlinks within the documents.

This is a great application and it's free! The PDF printer works fine but the first time I use it (after start my computer) it never shows the dialog with the options to save the file automatically. So, I have to start PDFCreator and then I can save it. After the first time, PDFCreator works as it should do.
