3 because it works. But why use PC memory for updating weather. All you need is a simple app like "The Weather Channel" on your cell phone for tomorrows forecast and as for today's - look out the window!

@Music4Ever, I welcome all reviews (even yours). It would be helpful if you'd keep your reviews on topic and make them about the software (instead of about me replying to reviews here). Replying to these reviews in my forum is not a reasonable "workaround". Until this system allows for replying to reviews, I will continue to reply in any way that is most helpful. Helping people is my ultimate goal. I know that makes you very unhappy for some reason, but that's really of no concern to me because it's kind of silly.

@CJ-CA - I'm sorry but this is a review site, if Mr Singer you don't like negative reviews he ought to remove his software from it - People look at the review then see many stars & assume that many separate reviews have rated it & are influenced by that - The star rating is skewed by Mr Singers constant 5 star reviews, so some sort of counterbalance needs to be in effect - No one tells me to be gone BTW, that includes you ~

And because you personally happen to think this software deserves 5 stars does not mean others have to agree with you - Where I live we are still allowed our opinions fortunately.

Mike Singer has given his own program 5 stars 32 times - That's unfair & messes up the system on FileForum because of the way it works - Mike use your own forum for the questions & i'll stop my reviews.

    Quote:

'my intention is not to review -- but, to reply to reviews in order to answer questions. It would be best if this site allowed people to reply to comments. That's not an option, so this is my workaround'

This site does not allow people to reply to comments as you well know so stop doing it & live with the fact or use another review site - And each & every time you leave a comment you have to click on the link - 'Write a Review' so, you are fully aware you are reviewing your own product. (Penny dropped yet?)

The proper 'workaround' is below: - Your very own forum, & actually you are the only software provider that abuses the star rating system on here:

Yet again I give the link for Singer Creations forum: ------>
    http://www.singerscreations.com/Forum/

@gatorfan95 - He has a forum & has had one for some time ~

@Mike Singer: I don't know have you have the temerity mention my review as your latest one neither mentioned the software either - As for being 'silly' I am waiting for a job to finish so it's no problem at all, personally I feel it's you who are unreasonable absolute & as you are quite happy to abuse this system, that probably says a lot about you? I'm so pleased you enjoy reading my reviews & therefore shall continue in the same manner ad infinitum ~ And that's now 33 five star reviews from you ;-)

If you want to pat yourself on the back, take some of the money you are making off the program and get your own website and forum. I will say it again, what you are doing is patently dishonest. @WizeGuy, weather data on the level of detail that Weather Watcher Live provides is never free. It's either purchased or paid for through advertising. Weather Watcher Live is ad-free, so the subscription model allows for those costs to be covered. It's a business model that's proven and consumers who take part understand that it allows those businesses to exist.

I really dislike this marketing model. My advice, boycott this approach; it's really bad for the consumer.

This will be my last review on BetaNews.

I retract all the positive things I said previously about WWL. I have dropped this application permanently--and I mean literally for life I will never try it again. I fought the good fight trying to post positive reviews, but I give up. I respected Mike Singer for his efforts, but his efforts have fallen short for my taste.

I wasted far too much time and energy trying to get it to work, and I give up. Speaking of time and energy, I have not enough of either to go into all my reasons, but I can mention a few:

I got tired of having to check, EVERY SINGLE TIME, if the weather info was timely. Too many times I didn't check and thus trusted info that was actually hours old. It's too inconvenient to check a date and time and compare that to the current date/time to ensure it's timely.

I got tired of opening a weather alert and being taken to a web page for a different ZIP code and/or a different city. Hey, Mr. Singer, when there's a tornado warning in my area, IT MATTERS to me that I look at alert info for the right area! Not only do I have to verify date/time, I have to verify and correct the area. So... WHY use WWL?

I got tired of trying to figure out--and report to Mike Singer--why the temperatures I was seeing for some stations were 7F or 8F different from others, and just as different from my own outside thermometer.

I got tired of error messages saying my preferred weather station was inaccessible. A few times when this happened, I determined which URL WWL was trying to access, and I found I could manually access it. What gives?

I got tired of having no way to configure the backup weather station. When the aforementioned errors would occur, WWL would invariably revert to using a lousy local station which always reported weather info I found worse than useless (e.g. temps far off from my own observations, and those of NWS).

All of these things happened again and again and again and again. It was an endless loop of aggravation. Report to Mike Singer? Done. And done again. And again.

If you can't trust the weather info, it's useless.

So, I give up. For good.

    Waste of over $50.

Do NOT try figuring out (or assuming) who I am and contacting me.

Its the best Weather software for Windows I have ever used!

However its got 2 very annoying bugs!

    1. Internet Explorer 9 causes the "Skin Tooltip" to show behide all opened windows!

    2. The Temp icon in the system tray disappears for a few seconds when getting new weather info from local stations.

If these 2 bugs can get fixed Weather Watcher Live will be perfect!!

@dhry, here are some benefits of version 7:

    - Offers data from WeatherBug, Weather Underground and NWS weather stations.

    - You can access many more weather stations. In Weather Watcher 5, I see one weather station for my zip code. I can access 65 weather stations in version 7.

    - In most areas, you can access current conditions from weather stations that are streaming data in realtime. Weather Watcher 5's weather stations sometimes don't update for up to 45 minutes.

    - If you live outside of the US, you'll be able to access hourly forecasts.

    - Better software. Less bugs. Version 5 is quite old now.

    - Comfort of knowing you'll be using a software product that is consistently maintained and improved upon.

I'm happy that Weather Watcher 5 is still up and running and people are still able to use it for free. I guess that'll last until The Weather Channel decides to cut is data feed.

I find it a little odd that you rated version 7 at two stars though. Aren't ratings supposed to reflect the quality of the software, rather than your disapproval for not being able to use a product (that you didn't even try) for free?

    Wow.

Let me take another drink and let this simmer.

    Wow.

OK, the drink isn't helping. I'll go on anyway.

Last night and this morning, my area had several NOAA-issued "tornado watches". Could I glean that from looking out the window, especially at night? Can you tell, by looking out the window, what wind speeds will be four hours from now? Do you have lawn furniture that you don't want blowing away? Did you used to?

Do you have a TV in every room in your home? I do not. I have a single TV, and it is only used for videos, because I despise TV.

TV weather personnel also have this nasty habit of not catering to my explicit personal requests, whether it's to view maps, hourly weather info, or anything else. I have tried shouting at the TV, but they flatly refuse to display what I want, when I want. By the way, with WWL, I can do all that.

Wait, the window/TV thing was a joke. Ah, I get it. Good one!

TWC has nothing to do with the $9.95/year subscription fee for Weather Watcher Live. The subscription will be used to cover the many costs that are involved in supporting, maintaining, and improving the product, as well as maintaining and delivering the weather content.

Weather Watcher Live was freeware since its creation, but it was by no means free for me to create and maintain it. It's not possible to create a good piece of software that is functional and reliable without putting a lot of time and effort into it. Unfortunately, time and effort can be quite costly.

Nobody is being forced to upgrade and pay the subscription fee. Weather Watcher Live has been around for a while now, so it's very easy to find older versions on the Internet. I even have the last freeware build posted in my forum.

Yeah--blame TWC. WWL doesn't even get data from TWC (Weather.com); it uses WeatherBug.com.

If my WWL issues were ever resolved, I'd pay for it. But I'd really like to see a one-time "lifetime" license option offered (perhaps for $39.95), since I have a psychological aversion to recurring fees.

In any event, I think $10/year for up to 3 computers is a pretty fair price, given WWL's development history. I think upgrades should be based on versions rather than time, but again, WWL has a very good track record. (I'd still MUCH prefer a one-time fee though...)

From what I've been reading at WWL support forums it was The Weather Channel, demanding a huge cut of WWL profits and a separate licensing fee for use of their data, that forced the developer to start charging for this program. This is not the first time TWC has been messing with weather apps that use their data (can you say monopoly).
The developer says that the previous version 6.0.34 will still continue to function as freeware without updates. Since I really do like the program, I have disabled the update checking feature and will continue using 6.0.34 for the time being.

I will not be paying $20/year for such a service, but I do not question his needs or right to change the current policy. Certainly a great deal of time and effort has gone in to this project.
Iin a cluttered market of such applications and widgets including those free for iPhone I have no reason to pay for this. I continue to rate it five stars for its quality, price not being a factor.

Excellent program and keeps me updated on the current weather state and alerts. When i had installation problems many versions ago i communicated with the author, Mr. Singer, and he worked through the issues and appears to have resolved them. The program is easy to use and well laid out. It may not be the NOAA weather bureau, but more than adequate to keep abreast of what i need to know. I highly recommend this over the Weather Bug, Weather Underground, and Weather Channel.

Still works poorly for me. I enter one ZIP code for a station, and then get severe weather alerts for a different ZIP code. (The weather updates themselves, at least, seem to come in for the correct station.) I also have to constantly check to make sure that the weather data I'm looking at is fresh.

Because of these problems and limitations, I still find it easier to visit weather.gov or weather.com for weather info. Even the limited True Launch Bar "Weather Forecast" plugin is much more useful to me.

Thanks for the option to allow maps to be unchanged. If I might, there's one other feature that I've used in weather pulse (I believe) -- associating a map to a station. In WWL and WW this might be implemented by associating a desktop image with a weather station. So when I change stations, my desktop image would change too. In WWL, this station-centered map might replace the default map -- or in both programs, there might be a "local map" item. Thanks again for being responsive ... and for creating a great program!

Mr. Singer, honestly, what is the point to me posting in the forum again about the problems I've had with WWL? I've already done so.

My main issues with WWL are:

    * The interface is annoyingly slow. It drives me nuts that after I click the tray icon, I have to wait 6-7 seconds for the window to appear. (My PC is not the latest and greatest, but I have no general performance problems. I think that if I can run Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 without problems, I should be able to get acceptable performance out of WWL on the same system.)

    * Every time I use WWL, I have to verify that the data is current. I have to do this because occasionally, I find it has not been updated in hours, yet nowhere is it made obvious that the data is stale. This really, really annoys me. It's faster and easier for me to simply open a Weather.com web page in Firefox.

Other than that (and a couple other, more minor gripes), I like WWL quite a bit.

Well ripfuel, I have to disagree. I do regret using WWL. I have encountered a few really aggravating problems:

    * The window takes an annoyingly long time to appear after I click the tray icon (~6 seconds or so, whereas WW never had that problem).

    * Since it doesn't update reliably, I CONSTANTLY have to check the "Now" tab to see what the "Observed" date/time is, to make sure I'm not looking at data that is 16 hours old. I wish the "Observed" date/time was on every tab, and more prominent.

    - Or, better yet, do what some AV applications do, and warn me if the data (in their case, virus signatures) is older than a certain threshold. For example, if I open the main window, and the data is over 4 hours old, indicate that. Why not? I really HATE having to check the "Observed" date/time, then checking the current date/time, then figuring out in my head how old the data is.

    * Sometimes, auto updates don't work, clicking Update does nothing, and I'm stuck with really old data. I have to restart WWL to get around this. When this happens, my internet connection is fine.

    * Often, the tray icon becomes italicized and stays that way until I restart WWL. This happens even when WWL has successfully updated the data.

(The main bug I've encountered is that the tray icon sometimes becomes italicized when weatherbug.com isn't available, and stays that way permanently. I guess the question of why weatherbug.com isn't deemed available is also an issue, because whenever that's happened in WWL, I could easily browse to weatherbug.com using Firefox and MSIE.)

Searched all over the web and couldn't find a download of "Free Weather" although there is a Free Weather site with the same graphics. Had very frustrating search for a free weather program with a tray icon, severe weather alerts, and nationwide reporting stations. Finally found Weather Watcher.

Except for the stylized moon phase graphics Weather Watcher otherwise has everything that Free Weather had and more. The ease of adding and changing active stations is particularly helpful for a frequent traveler, and the tooltip is handy, although sometimes doesn't show all the info I've checked in options - and Weather Watcher even has has reporting stations for back of beyond locations.

Starting the program manually has never led to an error yet and it sure beats bring up a NWS site.Good work Mike.

Simply brilliant. I'm a cyclist and use it to plan what to wear. I love the fact that it delivers POP. Without it, weather forecasts are almost completely useless. I find that 50% and above POP and you'd better bring rain gear. I think it the past year I've been mislead once by it. The program itself is solid. Little resource use. Never crashes. This is an excellent application. I see that Mike incorporated a couple of modifications we requested (writing out to .ini files) which makes this a perfect application for deploying via group policy on a per machine or per user basis with configuration managed via policy (city codes, connection options, etc). We got the custom branded package and have deployed this for our entire organization (250+ workstations) and it is the only allowed desktop weather app. No worries about spyware, no impact on performance, the BEST weather app I've found.

This is an very excellent program esp. for the price. What more can a person ask for when it comes to a free product? I'm extremely pleased with this program as well as this update that I've done although I had not had any problems with the other version I had. As far as closing out when i clicked the exit...it did just fine. This is also a program that can be used with other programs without taking up a bunch of cpu memory...The maker new how to make this program for most operating systems. I also use this along with another weather program called weather exchange it too is free and is also a good program. To tell the truth I dont know which I like the best...I suppose I find this one moreso in accuracy but it really cuts it close...Anyway just see for yourself...btw the moons do show up just fine and the the old settings of your prior will save if you allow the permissions ( it is heavily advised to allow the permissions for just in case you might need the old skins etc. )...Well anyway this is in appreciation for such a well made program, I'm very well pleased.

As others have said, it is updated frequently, and the work on the new spinoff program I read about last week does seem appealing. As you can see from his own response here, Mike is right there to help users with concerns they have. This isn't some program made by a big company where support is flaky and you can't get a response. Happy to give this a 5; keep up the good work.

We now live in germany, at the NL border, I pretty much check the weather every 3 or 4 hours, i also listen to the radio forecasts from german local radios, dutch and belgium radios which are on the ether in this area, none of them is as accurate as weather watcher.

Of course weather watcher isn't making the weather, and just visualize the weather as it's written on their supplier database, but it's any way more accurate then european meteorologic institutes!

This very nice weather program is tarnished by the availability of an adware version. Yes, I know one can download the non-adware version, but that requires care to avoid accidentally choosing the wrong version, and what about those who download from third party sites or are just in a hurry and choose the version with the most "features"?

I don't want to feel negative toward the program's author, but I am sitting on the fence on this one. Perhaps it's time to take a look at other weather programs.

This is a great program. I believe though the reason why it became "Adware" was because it came bundled with a separate program called "FoxIE", which was on the last version. Correct me if I'm wrong though. However, I don't really consider FoxIE to be Adware considering that it's nothing more than a program that tries to make an attempt of making IE look like Firefox. You do have the option of not installing the bundled software though, all in all though, WW is a good program being that it's free.

A great stable and reliable tool. There is just one HUGE minus: if you choose the "skinned tray tooltip" (which is a great advantage) there is no name for the process which leads to the icon beeing hidden by the windows smart system tray afer a certain amount of time. What's the use of a trayapp if you can't set it to be shown (or hidden) as you wish? Please fix this first and forget the skinning for now...

@ghammer: I wasn't rating based on his site's JavaScript. Try reading more carefully next time. Yes, different weather sites can give different data for the same city. (Sometimes, even one site can give conflicting results. As just one example, I get different data from Weather.com if I locate my city by ZIP code than I do if I enter the city name. The data isn't wildly different, but sometimes the temps and/or humidity levels disagree by 3-10 points.) As for the price of the TLB plugin, who cares? It doesn't make sense to grade on a curve for price.

@Mike Singer: I don't care if my comment is "useless". I tried in the past to give you constructive criticism, but I was outshouted by all the morons who love skins and non-standard interfaces.

Weather Watcher is stil 100% spyware-free/adware-free. There is a second bundle setup that is also spyware-free. The bundle setup is optional, and it was only meant to be downloaded by those people who wish to discover some great deals and support Weather Watcher while doing so.

I think it's great that you want to voice your opinion about Weather Watcher. However, please make sure what you say is factual, rather than past experiences of other companies who bundled software.

    -------------------------

Thost, it doesn't seem very fair that you are going to knock your review down a few notches because of something I offer on another website. All of the Weather Watcher downloads links (including the one on this site) point to the same adware-free, spyware-free setup that they have always pointed to.

Was looking for a good alternative for the wife who uses weatherbug (bloated piece of crap) and came across this. Very easy on lowerend system resources and looks nice, clean interface, and best of all no clutter or ads. I liked it so much I even installed it on my workstation and laptop.

Kudos to the author of this fine program!!

kprovance- I have found the developer to be very responsive, he has responded to every one of my questions and requests.
I also have tried several other weather software and have returned to Weather Watcher every time.

Weather Watcher is the best weather software I have used. And I have used almost all of them! I mean what more could you want? It has Lots and Lots of options uses hardly any system resources and has no Bloatware! I have tried Weatherbug Plus,WeatherPulse and a few others and Weather Watcher works the best and has the most (options)! And it gets new weather updates very quick. Trust me if you are looking for weather software this is the one to have! And the good thing is it is getting better with every new build. Just e mail the maker if you are looking for more options to be added.

I don't really understand the negativity around this fine utility program. I am using it for a long time now, and it finds the city I live in just fine. And I live in The Netherlands/Europe!

Ha! A low rating because of something on a webpage? Odd.

Only one source of weather info? So? Is the temperature, etc. different when gotten from different sites? The forecast? I only need one source of weather data and this app gets it then displays it best of any of the weather apps I've tried. Which is most of them.

As for a plugin for True Launch Bar, um, the price is slightly higher, don't you think?

Nope, I'll stand by my rating for this, a solid 5.

    Reviewing 5.6 Beta 2 (Dec 18, 2004)

I dislike the interface, for a variety of reasons, as well as the fact that it supports only one source for weather information. (The damnable snowflake JavaScript he has on his home page, which makes Opera devour ~50% of CPU time on my system, tells you how much he truly cares about interfaces.)

I find the weather plugin for True Launch Bar to be superior in many ways.

I know this review will be a real panty-twister for the Weather Watcher fanboyz, but that's too bad. Deal with it.

Simply the best weather program out there. In a previous version, however, there was a Netscape icon that installed on my desktop--never looked into why, though. In the recent versions that's gone. This program gives me the weather, excellent ways in which to display it and it's easy to use without unnecessary features which would make this program bloatware. Way to go. Five stars!

I have been using this for quite awhile.
It is the best free or paid weather app out there! I don't need skins, don't care about connecting to private weather stations, etc.
I want the latest conditions and the forecasts. This does the job without any bother on my part. Day in, day out. Hour after hour it has never given me a problem.

Hello I'm coming from Esbjerg Denmark and I have no trouble at all with weather watcher. It finds my town quick and easily and last but not least, Weather Watcher really comes up with the right forecasts, better than the forecasts they've come up with on all the TV and Radio stations we got here in Denmark. So I can only say one thing, Well done Weather Watcher Now I can get a precise forecast for the hole day when I go fishing tomorrow at 4 o'clock in the morning.

Not a bad program, although it does need proxy support as someone mentioned below. Personally I just bookmark myself a page at weather.com and put it in my quickbar, and that accomplishes the same thing except I think weather.com has ads on it, but I use zero popup to get rid of those.

I like this program because it takes little memory and it's easy to use. Also the temp is displayed on the taskbar and updates are easily configurable for 10 minutes at a time. It shows by the hour and day forcasts. I can't see a reason why this doesn't have a 5 rating because it's even free so far.

Offer them to help them program this soft instead of complaining. A bigger team a better program
