I've used it for ages.Very good algorithms for working out best traffic movement to get most out of connection.Mainly if u do a few things at once,eg.p2p or streaming. Can make surfing much more responsive, this is a fact. All the main download sites, softpedia(one of the biggest in the world)give it very good, softonic 3 out of 5.Majorgeeks 4.84 out of 5.I think old chopsuey with his vapour obviously doesn't know what he's talking about and mucked up the ratings which can't be 1 out of 5,he's just being silly.

I watch live TV via my internet connection and often have a torrent application running in the background. With cFosSpeed this works perfectly and without any manual intervention. Without cFos this combination of usage is absolutely hopeless.
If you're not a P2P user or a gamer then cFos may not be for you, but why would you feel the need to criticise and condemn it as useless?

An excellent tool for those who need, say, torrents running, while watching streaming video, while using FTP, while using Skype.

cFosSpeed works like a champ for me, especially on pages and sites that seem to hang when loading or reloading. I am on a high speed connection already and this advances the speed and control of what I upload and download some 250% on my end. Would not hesitate to download or register again, even during these difficult economic times.

New skin (actually the new slots feature) is a nice idea, but the actual skin is not too great, imho. On the gray background the lines are barely seen AND the grey itself doesn't look "slick" (as the former default Liquid Crystal skin). But well, overall I am as usually happy to see that the program is being SO actively developed!

    cFosSpeed 4.53 build 1555
! New skin: cFosSpeed now comes with a traffic meter skin. It allows
fine grained real-time traffic analysis. The skin comes in two sizes:
small to get a quick overview and large for detailed analysis. Each skin
draws up to 10 graphs. To enable/disable a graph line click on the
'legend' button on the left border to open the left pane. Then click on
the text for each colour to enable/disable the respective graph.

Each graph displays the value of a certain traffic "slot", where the volume
of traffic of certain programs and protocols is counted. You can setup
which traffic goes to which slot (and is thereby drawn by which graph)
in the slot setup dialog. In this Beta version the slot dialog is sometimes
hard to use, but we are improving the slot setup dialog in upcoming
    versions.
+ New slot commands: you can set up the slots from the spd command line as
well. To do so, you can use the following commands. All commands begin
    with "spd slot ":

    get/set name
    get/set/add protocols
    get/set/add programs
get/set mode get/set the traffic counting mode. available modes are:
    tx, rx, max, total_tx, total_rx, total_max
'max' modes display rx or tx, whichever is faster in percent
'total' modes display all traffic, ignoring protocol/program settings
unused protocols display protocols that have not been assigned to a slot
unused programs display program names that have not been assigned to a slot
save save all slot settings to user.ini
reload load all slot settings from user.ini
+ Added new skin functionality: you can now draw lines and set text with
    arbitrary fonts in your system.

So the reason for rating cFos 1 is martin? :| Okaaaay.

Well, guys, I don't know about you, but cFos DOES work for me. It DOES give the bandwidth to applications that I consider a priority (eg: on a server side a give a priority to Radmin Server, on client side to Radmin Viewer), which DOES make them work faster. And it costs below average compared to other software. To ME cFos is a great bargain.

And I like constant betas, since to me that means the product is not dead and is constantly being developed, bugs fixed, etc.

Funny how people claim things they totally have no clue about at a sight of a user exited about a product.
I am NOT the author, I am NOT affiliated with the developers in ANY way. So go suck on something.

The developer's nick is martin (at least I think he is a developer), if you care to have a look at the forums.

What I AM is a registered user, but that's about it. And I simply like the program and the fact that it's being constantly developed. It's as simple as that.

And by the way, your claim of 80% of speed is COMPLETELY bogus. You don't even have to be a genius (and YOU obviously isn't) to test it: try to download a file from a high-speed server, which will max out your bandwidth and it WILL give you 100% of the speed. cFos regulates (reduces traffic) ONLY when there is an application with higher priority that needs bw.

    CHANGELOG:
    FosSpeed 4.53 build 1552
x TCP Pinger is now switched off by default. This caused sporadic TCP

    x Skin bugfixes.

The program itself as well as the concept are great. But it needs more polish, especially uninstall procedure (and recovery/rollback options in case of a failure) and menus (style, language, etc)

    cFosSpeed 4.53 build 1545

! Rewrote ping engine. "Hybrid ping" is dead, long live "meta ping"! :)
The new pinger engine can make test pings to measure connection latency
with ICMP (like ping), but as well with UDP and TCP; furthermore, packets
can be sent from both kernelmode and usermode. All pingers operate in
parallel and cFosSpeed automatically selects the best one. The reliability
of the measurements is checked all the time and cFosSpeed will switch to a
different pinger if one starts to fail.
Hopefully, this will further reduce the problems users have with misbehaving
firewalls, routers and ISPs. Be sure to allow packets from spd.exe to pass
through your firewall if you're asked.
Commands of the new ping engine:
pinger set the protocol and TTL for outgoing test pings
pingstat print ping statistics (-clear clears stats after printing)
    pingclear clears ping statistics
pingboot cycle thru all pingers to find best protocol and TTL
sethops set the TTL for outgoing test pings

+ New language: Nederlands! That makes a total of 19 languages supported.

To many linux geeks to simple geeks what this program does may seem trivial: it introduces QoS managament. I agree that routers can do that, but the thing of it is that usually setting it up is pretty damn hard (on dd-wrt) and seems overwhelming (on tomato) on some firmwares.
I think for the price this program is a huge find. I mean, it does NOT magically make your internet connnection faster, but what it really DOES do is it makes the way your traffic is managed more efficient. For example, let's say I got a download or upload going and I want to browse the web (which is usually barely works when either download or upload are maxed out): what cFosSpeed does is it gives a priority to http traffic thus making browsing smooth and fast. What's good about such QoS approach to traffic management is that it does NOT set a limit to your download or upload, rather it redirects traffic to a higher-priority protocol ONLY when its in use. Thus you get the best of both worlds.
Priority can be assigned either to protocol or to any application, which is friggin great!

Anyhow, this program TOTALLY worth the money, especially because for a license you get LIFETIME support/upgrades! Support is good and updates happen quote often. Plus, it supports Windows 7.

Domket: How so? Peer-to-peer doesn't mean ILLEGAL, there are tons of LEGAL torrents like for Linux distributions or demos for games and even the WoW downloader works with a sort of torrent-client.

So, what you're saying is not true.

It let's you prioritize certain software for example:
I want to download but I want to play World of Warcraft without too much lag, this is where CFOSSpeed comes into play, it gives WoW high priority and downloading programs low priority.

You can setup your own rules regarding this, this is just an example of what you are able to do with this program.

Fellas, toasale has no idea what he/she's talking about. Anyways, you don't need me to tell if toasale is right or wrong, the facts are all out there. I'm just here to review cFosSpeed, and to the best of my knowledge, I can assure you that there's no other program or technique on the Windows platform that does what cFosSpeed does in it's entirety. The closest a program comes to a *part* of cFosSpeed's functionality is NetLimiter, but saying cFosSpeed is something like NetLimiter is a gross understatement. I'll leave ya'll to the product page to find out all the features.

Personally, I've faced no problems using cFosSpeed. Sure, there are bugs here-and-there, but I've used this on three computers for the past couple of years and never faced anything serious, 'cept maybe the odd ping loosing its way. Lemme tell you, cFosSpeed makes a *big* difference if you're a multi-tasking net-a-holic like me, or if you're an online gamer where low ping/lag is the of utmost importance. Online gamers would probably know that a high speed net doesn't automatically translate to a low latency. cFosSpeed helps you achieve that (among other things). It's NOT some friggin' internet-boosting-registry-tweaking-accelerating-junk which is found in so many suites these days, like System Mechanic.

Kind Advise: If you have no use for/idea of a program, please don't "review" it. More than anything else, you're just making a fool of yourself.

I've used cFos for years, both betas and stable builds, and have never ever had a problem with it.
No BSOD's, corrupt downloads or slow speeds. Well at least none caused by cFos.
And cFos is not a Netlimiter type application where you set a rule telling a program how much of your total bandwidth it can use. The traffic shaping doesn't work like that. It works by prioritizing packets sent by different applications and/or protocols, allowing high priority ones to "jump the queue".

it's a tiny systemtray ballontip that appears once, like per uptime session or so (?), then dissapears after a few seconds....

due to a copy/paste mistake/mix-up i blocked the wrong IP with my firewall (namely the ping IP of cfosspeed) and did not recognize it for weeks.

    duh!

also, a traymenu that goes to a depth of four levels (skin selection) is a design faux pax.

the idea behind this program is great,

and i'm sure in the future, these type of programs will be essential in corporate environments,

but it has to be said, that with every release, its just constant bug fixes, i have still yet to see a release that has not had something critical fixed,

it would be nice if this company launched a better beta system, as this type of program could seriously screw up ones networks, or even cause massive problems with windows, as this program literally sits in between the network cards and windows, very dangerous if something goes wrong, and the company has been releasing a lot of updates lately,

i feel that the company should launch a 3 step release system, like other companies do when working on sensitive software like this, (something firewall developers should also do aswell!!!!)

    step 1, beta test,
step 2, fix problems from step 1,
step 3, release stable version to public,

but the company doesn't do this, they keep touching and adding things, and breaking things, so a stable version never gets finished, (just like firewall developers hehehe)

    Reviewing 4.07 Build 1378 Beta (Nov 30, 2007)

Point Zero, Sorry but you are just plain wrong. You obviously don't know what this product does.

This is an active network traffic monitor that throttles {shapes) certain low priority traffic allowing higher priority traffic to get through.

For example, I have a 20Mbps down / 2Mbps up internet connection, this translates to approximately 1.9MB/240KB. My bittorrent client runs 24/7, without cFosSpeed i would need to set the client to upload at around 180-200KB to allow me to download at full speed or try to browse the web (painfully slow).

With cFosSpeed I can set my upload to unlimited and bittorrent will use all the bandwidth until something with a higher priority needs it. So now... instead of uploading at 180KB and browsing very slowly, I can upload at 240KB, download at 1.9 MB and still browse the web or play online games, without worrying about shutting my bittorrent client off.

Changing the MTU and other things in the registry WILL NOT do what this program does, Period!

This is one of the very few shareware programs I have ever paid for. worth every penny and more.

cFosSpeed is a very handy QoS application. It lets you do things like set your BitTorrent client to full speed, and since it [using default cFosSpeed settings] gets the lowest priority, it'll use your full bandwidth unless you're using it for other things that are typically higher priority, like VoIP or web surfing.

This normally excellent program has run into a serious technical problem in recent releases. Whereas previously I could run downloads and uploads concurrently with good speeds all round, now uploads (via FTP) cause downloads (via browser or a player) to slow to a crawl. I've gone back to v.4.02 until such time as the developer can fix the problem. There seems to be no equivalent program one can switch to.

simply works! i've been using this software for about 2 years now, and it has never failed me, when using p2p i used to lose download speed do to upload speed choking all the connection, cfosspeed is like a police officer directing traffic by priority, slowing down the upload a bit in order to max the download speed, great app for p2p and browsing while using p2p... worth every penny.

s0121: No, you haven't used CfosSpeed _ON_ you router - you have used it _WITH_ your router.
CfosSpeed is a Windows-driver with a control-application that can only be installed on a computer with MS-Windows.
You can, however, install it on all computers in you home - which are in turn connected to a central router or switch - and all the computers will then be able to co-operatively use the bandwidth optimally.
If you use a computer as a router (with ICS, Windows Server, or some third-party connection-sharing) you only install CfosSpeed on that computer.

This is a wonderful application - while my server (used as a router) is filling my bandwidth with torrents (24Mbps/8Mbps) I can still browse the web at full speed - and those browsing my websites feel no slowdowns either.
If someone is using my FTP-server or my Version Cue-server - they get max priority, and the torrents instantly gets lower speeds.

cFosSpeed is one of those programs that you initially don't know about, then get sceptical of its working or maybe think that you don't have any need for such a program. I mean, I never even heard of the term "Traffic Shaping" earlier. But after you install and use it, you'd be wondering how you survived all these years without it! These days I keep talking about how great Traffic Shaping is (even though I'm no expert on the subject :P)

Like yesterday, I was using BitTorrent and VoIP on my low-bandwidth line and I suddenly remembered that before cFosSpeed how the VoIP clarity wasn't that great with lags, jitters and crackling. Now I just can't do a VoIP call without cFosSpeed installed!

    ---

The main interesting features in the past few releases have been:

    - the cooperative mode, where cFosSpeed works collectively on multiple PCs that share a single line

    - the line speed limiter, where you can manually limit the upload or download speed to an exact value

These two features further increase the utility of cFosSpeed, making it an even more unique program and perhaps an alternative to other bandwidth management programs.

Couple of reasons for his rating, we here in the land of OZ have what we call Fraudband. I'm supposed to be on ADSL2+.I only live 100 metres from the local exchange. Download speeds are ok, indeed there was at one stage several months ago managed to get a DVD size file coming down @50+mbs. Yet, my upload speed is only about 12-18kbs, depending on the time of day.
I should also qualify this, I'm spoilt in that my office has a line of sight laser connection @155mbs (should anyone from Australia doubt this check http://msi.net.au/connect.htm#adsl).
Anyway, that [deXter] has gone to the effort, not only revwieng this app,yet also giving his usual highly informative assessment.

it took me a while to figure out wether this works as advertised or makes things worse.

it seems both is true, depending on situation.

when trafic shaping is enabled it may block uploads of utorrent from 90 kbps to 50 kbps. the rest will just be unused since i am not doing anything (like surfing). when all i want is upload to get a good torrent ratio - that is bad. so i would just disable traffic shaping (right click on tray icon) and get full speed uploads.

when i want to surf and download 5 files with IDM and run utorrent at the same time cfosspeed will allow me to surf fast. so it works as advertised. thats priceless.

and it works MUCH better (in enhancing the responsiveness while browsning) than just setting an upload limit to utorrent.

my understanding is probably still not right, or maybe the mystic calibration will improve the behaviour someday but the bottomline is, that cfosspeed is a must have, but not a set and forgett thing.

and it is a pain to crack. might be the first software i will buy.

i really dislike the whole interface.
there is hardly a good thing to say about it.
worst thing is that you get no reliable information about wether it is working. just a silly tray popup ONCE when it is not working.
the whole thing is just not transparent enough to an intuitive user.

Right; cFosSpeed is not about making any overall speed faster--they don't lie to you like the unethical purveyors of those crap "tweaker" pseudo-utilities do. What cFosSpeed does is prioritize TCP/IP traffic, which allows you to get the most out of whatever bandwidth you already have.

For example, normally, if you have a BitTorrent client running with aggressive settings (to maximize upload and/or download performance), your web browsing speed will suffer to the extreme. (Let's not get into BitTorrent client chauvinism here; any client going full-tilt will kill HTTP traffic speeds.) With cFosSpeed, what you'll see is that your BitTorrent client will run at full speed, but then if you load a few web pages, they'll load almost as quickly as if the client wasn't running at all--and the client will temporarily slow down, so to speak, making way for the higher-priority HTTP traffic. Once the web page(s) have loaded, the BitTorrent client will once again reach full speed. This is what the cFosSpeed driver/service are doing for you, in the background, automatically.

After reading some reviews I thought I would give it a try. Honestly unbelievable because now I can browser the internet, FTP, download and upload at 30k with almost no lag! Simply amazing.

Apparently people have less lag(and more consistent ping) in games I host with 2560/640kbit ADSL than another person with 2560/896 ADSL.

That's about a 20kb/sec difference in the amount of data sent, so it's shocking I would lag less. I guess this does do something after all, even if it's only prioritizing who gets data when, and blocking* useless instant messenger stuff during games.

To the ones complaining it doesnät speed up your connection - you have missed the whole point of cFosSpeed.
It's a traffic shaper, which optimizes the speed when using several different programs accessing Internet at once.
For example - I have Azureus, eMule+, a FTP server and host a couple of websites on my server. Even when my connections is fully used by these programs, if I start to browse the Web from my other computer - cFosSpeed prioritizes my browsing more than the other programs, and I can surf just as fast as I would if none of the other programs occupied my connection.

bjoer751: My $19.99 modem has that feature builtin, it seems. Love those Canadian ISP's.

I can set one comp to torrent with all of my 2560/640kbit connection, and my modem will ignore its requests and grant another computer(out of three) up to 33% as requested.

Despite that, the torrenting computer still averages 55kb/sec up, and 220kb/sec down, but I can host games of say....Warcraft III custom maps, with 10 players, lag free. Browsing is instant.

So....yeah. Now I know that I need this even less, and at least I know why it's not terribly effective(if my modem is ignoring what hogging computers request...).

    Original Review:
I can see why many people would like this, but for me it didn't actually do much except slow it down a bit. My ISP is Telus(Canada). I notice other people mentioning Canadian ISP's also said it was slower, so maybe there's a lot of s***ty drivers or ISP's in America?

All that aside, this program does what is claims. It really helps my ping times when running torrents. Web pages load just about as well as if I wasn't using my connection at all. Maybe one day these QoS features will be built into Windows, but for now this is as good as it gets.

I've been using it for several months, and I've not had any problems with it.

You don't even need to restart your computer when you install a newer version.

It takes several days for the program to gather enough information about your connection to operate most efficiently, so give it time.

It won't make things blazing fast, but it definitely does work and makes a noticable difference.

Without this, surfing the Internet with BitTorrent running is a horrible experience, however when using Cfos it's much better, altough it can still be somewhat slow at times... just not nearly as bad as without it.

I've never had a crash, error, or any other problem while using this.

It sets a System Restore point on install, so if you do encounter any problems, you should be able to restore your system and be back on your way.

Tech support for this program has also been very good the few times I had questions for them.

    Without this software:
BitTorrent users are advised to cap their upload bandwidth to somehwhere around 80% of their upstream capacity. The remaining few percent is required for sending acknowledgement responses (called ACK). If the upstream is not capped, the ACKs will take longer to reach the recipient, possibly fail to reach. This causes downloads to become slower.

The above explains the need for capping at 80%. HOWEVER, ACKs do not normally use up that remaining 20% thus the idea of capping makes downloading/uploading somewhat inefficient; not fully utilising the bandwidth.

    With cFosSpeed:
You do not cap the bandwidth, let cFosSpeed manage priority of traffic. This results in improved efficiency.

The optional System Restore Point is only meant as a safe guard, in case anything goes wrong during the installation, in which case you can use the Window System Restore to put your system back into the same state it was in before the installation.

I saw the benefit of this just before version 2 came along. Before that I had little luck with it.

Now, I have registered it because it makes a huge difference for my system.

I download quite a bit from bittorrent sources and the occasional eMule session. With this driver installed and running, I do not have any problems with checking email, browsing the web, etc.

Made a big difference here. It does not increase your speed, don't look for that. It applies priorities on the traffic and that is why email, browsing and such are better when this is active. They get bandwidth before lower priority apps get it.

Simple, but cool. And works quite well.
According to the last time I read the info on their website, the traffic shaping (priorities) only work on XP.

Nice program, had it for these 30 days of trial period and i was fascinated about how good it was working ... Even P2P programs which fill your Upload doesnt impress it ...

    i agree with tbaster.

The most important function is the abilety to prioritize programs, so i.e. browsing and online gaming will be sent and received first instead of being 'queued' behind any P2P or whatever other program. I use download managers alot and that always eats away my complete bandwidth when downloading.(3200/768 That used to make my winamp radio stop playing. I've set priorities and it works perfect now. Online gaming and down/uploading fast is now a possibilety without taking away the playability.

I'm very pleased with this program, since it alows you to use the bandwith you've got. However, i think the price is way to high, so I'll give it a 4.

An added goodie is that you can set different priorities for p2p apps. Bittorrent is very aggresive by design, can shut down the upstream volume of other p2p apps that run concurrently. cFosSpeed always you to give a slice of the pie back to your other p2p apps.

It give it a 4 out of 5 - the price is a little too high, even for a useful utility.

Your overall connection doesn´t get any faster really. That is not the point with the program. You still have the speed that you get from your ISP, you can´t get faster than that. I have an 10/1 ADSL with IP-telepone. My rates are, when testing 8.26Mbit down and 860/kb up, that is fairly good and cant expect more not many get the full speed in ADSL.

Read about what the program is supposed to do here:
    http://www.cfos.de/techinfo/shape_e.htm

It is when you are downloading something this program kicks in, it doesn´t allow the downloading to interfere with browsing. For me it did this: Everytime I used a p2p-program it was very time consuming to browse the web because of the 100+ connections to and from my computer. When I installed this program the downloading with bittorrent or emule didnt interfere with my browsing at all. It was like I wasn´t downloading anything. Yet I got atleast as good downloadspeed with the p2p as before. I might be imagining this but my expierience is that the downloads are faster. I might just be lucky right now that I happen to connect to peers with a big upload line, I don´t know really but it goes faster. And I don´t have to cap my upload as much (now I cap my upload with only 5% of my uploadlimit, I had to cap 25% before cfosspeed to be able to browse the net somewhat normal)

Maybe not everyone notice any difference for one reaon or anther, but it is like that with any program one uses - it works for some and some have huge problems because of different configurations.
But thats the beauty with try before you buy :)

I might add that my online gaming doesn´t suffer much from connection interupts anymore. But that might be a lucky coincidence too...?

The program works as it is intended. I have a 8/1 ADSL connection.
You browse the web fast when downloading something with bittorrent and 100 connections to it. Surfing the web isn´t affected at all while downloading, it´s as fast as if you weren´t downloading anything. I imagine the normal browsing is faster too, my experience is that the pages load faster even with no downloads going on. But that might just be my imagination?

The uninstallation process is a bit muddled. Surely they could have proper uninstall process instead of having to use system restore? It would be nice to know why they have chosen to use that approach on uninstalling.

This progran is good and works well.

Uploading now is constant 20k/s on my 1 meg ADSL while downloading is constant too where befeore both would go up and down like crazy when doing them together.

I'm only giving it three though as I believe the price is too expensive for this. If you can afford it though then it's a 4+/5 app.

Works well for me. On a 2meg ADSL connection, it increased average sustained bandwidth (11 mins) from ~215 to 225kbps. Worth a go.

I've tried version 1.08 and 1.09 is just as good if not better. Before installing this program, connecting to webpages took ages when using p2p appz like emule... now i connect to them quicker thanx to this programs inteligent bandwidth priorty handling.

This is my 1st review for a program here and this is the 1 i wanted to rave on about. Well worth getting if you're fed up with slow web browsing due p2p apps...

my only gripe with this software is it's unisntall procedure.
you have to create XP restore point before install, and then do system rollback go uninstall it....this is rather drastic measures. and i had a few bad experiences with 'system restore'.
if they would implement true and proper uninstall, this soft easily gets rating of 5
