Yahoo! Messenger allows you to quickly exchange messages with your online friends. Unlike e-mail, instant messages appear as soon they're sent. By downloading the application to your computer, you can send instant messages. Other features include voice chat, file transfer, mail and stock quote alerts, sports scores, news, and much more.

So far, so good, I think the era of IM"s to be gone, today a lot of MM's who replace all, in one program, lighter and ads free.Good thing - really improved video call feature from last 5 years of YM history, in the same time bad thing - big pop up banner ad in the conversation window within video call. Very annoying. I don't like apps displays ads, slowdown PC and don't want to buy something, while speaking or working.

This new refresh of Build 922 is just a whole new messenger! Honestly, I am very surprised over the big changes that have been added. Build 922 had no games in it whatsoever, and we finally have games in here once again!
Also, from the looks of it, I believe Yahoo has a plan to allow custom theme downloads soon. Hopefully, we can get more information on this real quick!
But, the only thing at this point that is keeping it from getting a perfect score is the fact that their webcam broadcasting feature still isn't streamlined. While we can get image downloads every second, it should be streaming like Windows Live Messenger.

This thing was promised months ago. In fact it so "alarmed" Microsoft that they went to work on an improved version of Windows Live Messenger. And they got it out the door several months ago.
Meanwhile 10 months later, we see just a *beta* of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista.
And you know what? It's crap. It looks nice but it's buggy as heck *AND* the regular version has many more useful features.
Speaking of the regular vesion, that's what is in the screenshot (as of this writing). The screenshot is *not* of the Vista version.

To be honest.. I'm not really impressed. 10 months of development and all they came up with is a pre-beta version from with you can only send IM's. No email notification, voicechat, videochat, games etc. Even the sidebar widget thingy isn't working. The only thing I am positive about is that there are no ads in this version ;)
Reviewing 9.0.0.907 Beta (Nov 8, 2007)
I give it a 3, as its still one of the most common messengers and makes web cam easy, and while bloated its still crashes far less then Skype. Also ICQ is still the best IM client IMHO because the messages are directly peer-to-peer and not routed through some mystery (untrustworthy?) middle server, which also makes transfers faster, and most importantly its the only IM I know of where I can right-click on my contacts to get their current/last known IP address, useful if your pals don't have a static.

Yahoo messenger is dead. The chat rooms are dead. It has become ugly and bloated. From my experience and a list of around 200 contacts, most of them have migrated to other clients. Ir has gone the route of ICQ. Google talk and Skype are about the only ways to go right now.
To semi-quote the guy below. This is a piece of crap.

I'm as suspicious of the "piece of crap" language as I am "It's a slam dunk" language. Saying something is a piece of crap doesn't say crap about the software.
Reviewing 9.0.0.797 Beta (Nov 1, 2007)
I downloaded it yesterday, I am quite pleased with this Beta. It's stable and does what it is supposed to do. Another improvement on the previous version is that the minimize, maximize and close buttons are now workin in Vista.
The steps to change skins have changed from the previous version, now you just click the little green icon, left of the minimize button to change the preset skins. There is currently, as far as I know, no way to set up your own designed skin.
The only letdown for me is that this is not the long awaited Vista messenger, but apart from that I can certainly live with this Beta.
Reviewing 9.0.0.797 Beta (Oct 31, 2007)

What a pile of crap. Yahoo was fine back in the day until they turned it into a mess. It's sad, many people used to use yahoo messenger mainly for the chat rooms which are completely destroyed now and all this program is becoming is a wannabe skype. They have completely turned their backs on the chat community and replaced them with VOIP cronies. Well i am sorry but skype smacks yahoo around as far as VOIP. Yahoo is dead. let's hope the "vista" edition cleans things up, it does look pretty. If you still like to weed through the bots and server problems of the yahoo chat rooms, try Yahelite or even Trillian....at least yahelite gives you some protection. Ytunnelpro is a nice addon for yahoo Messenger but yahoo is so screwed up lately that its not worth the annoyance.
Reviewing 8.1.0.415 (Aug 20, 2007)
@osric, use the "customized" install option & you can uncheck everything.
I still find Yahoo! to be the best mainstream IM client, and many of the bells & whistles, as well as other settings are useful to me. I was hoping it would inherit a few of the MSN functions when they "merged" or whatever they called it, but that didn't happen. Sure it's got a few bugs & lacks desireable features that other clients have, but don't they all?
I find alternative clients to be too limited as far as native funtions go.
I don't use the chat rooms, so I can't comment on that.
Reviewing 8.1.0.415 (Aug 20, 2007)
I didn't think it was possible but Yahoo proved me wrong. They did some maintenance to the chat rooms and have actually found a way to make it suck even more.

- Creates a Desktop Shortcut without asking
- Creates a Quick Launch Shortcut without asking
- Adds itself at startup without asking
These are the characteristics of a spyware.
An installer should have a checkbox so that a user can disable the creation of these shortcuts. I find it really strange that it remembers all my user preferences except the "Whenever I start up my computer - Automatically start Yahoo! Messenger" setting. I have to uncheck this every time I install a new version. That too, you need to login to uncheck this box.

My biggest gripe with Yahoo Messenger is their chat rooms, which are in need of major updates. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 attempts to enter a room because it takes too long to long on. And when you do get on it's just plain chaos. Chat rooms seem to be runned by spam bots, booters and the annoying pricks who spend 30 minutes saying Hello over and over even when others say hello back.
I like PalTalk for chat rooms there are moderators who take care of such problems.
Without the chat rooms Yahoo Messenger is of no use, Trillian is the way to go in that case.
And that's my 2 cents :)
Reviewing 8.1.0.401 (Jun 10, 2007)
It would be great if ppl would back up their claims with any substance or at least not make ridiculous claims.
The update is recognized within YIM, about 200k in size and updated inline - you do NOT d/l the whole thing.
I happen to like the emoticons best of any alternative messenger. They are nicely designed with good proportions and some are well animated.
I could do without the bloat and currently have no use for the plugins.
However you can always use the Yahoo Mail inline messenger or the new Yahoo Web messenger...

Has NO voice capability on Windows Vista. Not that I would ever use Vista without a working keygen/crack (which as recently come out by Paradox) but Yahoo needs to get on the ball with their utterly retarded voice codecs. Microsoft is to blame too for the spending of OVER TEN BILLION DOLLARS and 5 years of development (3 of which went to Vista WGA 'Windows Gay Annoyance') on an operating system that isn't even backward compatible with a stupid cheesy ad-ridden crap-of-a yahoo messenger.

I like Yahoo Messenger because of the fact that I can be invisble and chat while invisible, something that MSN Messenger doesn't do or didn't do last time I tried it. So, Yahoo, what gives?

This app great on most fronts but...
I have a possible bug to report for PC-PC conference calls.
I currently have two soundcards but I use my secondary onboard Soundmax soundcard (Not Windows Default) to make Yahoo! PC-Phone calls from Yahoo! Voice. They’ve always worked.
However, I discovered when I initiate or join conference calls Yahoo! Messenger uses my main Windows Default soundcard (Creative Audigy 2), even though the second soundcard (Soundmax) has been properly selected and saved via audio tuning wizard.
The bug is: it reverts to my main (Windows Default) soundcard only for conference calls, even though I’ve selected my secondary soundcard (Yahoo! Messenger default) in Yahoo! Messenger preferences.
Can anyone confirm please?

Version 8,1,0,209 is great.
As for the ads, it's there because if it were not there, the application would NOT BE FREE. The ads don't matter, and it's UNNECESSARY to remove them. I don't pay attention to them much, and they're NOT invasive. Some people really like to complain for complaining's sake, which is rather childish.
The look and feel of YM8.1 is so that I can be a mirror of sorts to Windows Live Messenger (since YM and WLM can interop with each other). Saying that they should have left it alone is crazy.

I have used this IM off & on for over 6 years & have tested many versions. I quit using yahoo msgr. as much when they started putting to much trash inside the program & like putting the profile option in places where you have to have a search warrant to find it. I took a point off because it's using about 55mb of memory - not sure if this is localized on my system or in general. If it's just a local situation then 5 all the way, if it's standardized and happening to everyone who uses it, then 4.

Reviewing 8.0.0.682 (Jul 29, 2006)
The Final is much more stable than the Beta release.
One thing I don't like about the Final is that you're unable to block those annoying ads
Reviewing 8.0.0.682 (Jul 29, 2006)
Working well for me.
Voice calls to another computer are clearer than MSN and connect much faster too.
I have added WLM users and we can IM just fine. But they have to be part of the beta of the interop program too.
In all, pretty nice effort.
Reviewing 8.0.0.682 (Jul 28, 2006)
I must say I like Live Messenger more... Yahoo messenger always feels somehow outdated
Reviewing 8.0.0.682 (Jul 28, 2006)
Messenger 8.. Is very nice I dont know why people want to trash it like they do..
The only problem I see with this new build is that the default plugins dont stay on. Its kinda surprising that they released the final build this quickly. But thats yahoo for ya..
Reviewing 8.0.0.682 (Jul 28, 2006)
Yahoo Msg has def. jump the shark. Thank god i still have the full download of version 7.437- the last descent version. Since than, you have to download the dopey starter file. I tried this version as a wtf and i hate it. Appearance is crap, probs with my address book. And who cares about communicating with msn msg. Is it that hard to have all ur instant msg's start individually.
Reviewing 8.0.508 Beta (Jul 14, 2006)
libasta: The interoperability with Microsoft Live Messenger works great! Not sure what wasn't working for you!?
This is a good messenger, only let down slightly by the installer attempting to install lots of crap along-side it.
Now there is interoperability, I'm using this instead on Live Messenger (for the time being at least).
Reviewing 8.0.508 Beta (Jul 13, 2006)
The interoperability with MSN is obviously not working. Only one out of five trials with users using WLM 8 is actually working. The WLM user cannot send back the message in the end.
Reviewing 8.0.508 Beta (Jul 9, 2006)
bravelass, you can just install the 8.0 beta version. All options are functional apart from communicating with MSN Live users. You can always reinstall 7.5 or 7.0 if you don't like the 8.0 version.
Also this review says it's for all windows versions, this is incorrect. When installing 8.0 on anything less than xp or win2k you will loose functionality: no skins, crashes when loading plugins, and unable to see remote avatars.
Reviewing 8.0.508 Beta (Jul 7, 2006)
i hope this is not off topic. i need to ask what is up about yahoo messenger with voice beta 8.0 before i up grade. friend in Scotland upgraded, then couldn't read my offline messeges, and was going to send me a voice messege but couldn't figure it out! another friend uploaded it yesterday while we were talking and my name disappered off her list had to send me a request...good thing we were on at same time! plus all of my audibles turned into kisses on her screen!!!!!!!! i have phone in and phone out also. i want to upgrade but am afraid i won't know how t do anything that i am used to doing, or will lose things! anyone there that can give me a heads up on 8.0 and what works and how? thanx
Reviewing 8.0.508 Beta (Jul 7, 2006)
Suzzywoozy, you know that if you "remove" the ad, you'd be violating the agreement that you signed (by clicking next) when you installed the software? The ads are supposed to be there..
Anyway, I love this version.. it's so much better than YM7, in that you can send 1GB of info to friends and you can even have 1000 contacts on your list.. plus plugin feature is cool too. Actual version number is not 8.0.0.058, it's 8.0.0.508..
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Jul 2, 2006)
I upgraded from Yahoo Messenger 7.0 and now can't make PC to Phone calls. I'm not sure if Yahoo no longer has a relationship with Net2Phone, which was integrated into the 7.0 Messenger client. I had to downgrade to get this feature to work.

Nice Messenger, needs more Skins directly added to it, than just the 3, something like ICQLite skin thingy would be good, that way you could change the colour of it without downloading skins
time for a Newer Screenshot of YIM isnt it?, also this release wil coincide with the MS an Yahoo deal so people will be able to chat to others on Windows Live Messenger via yahoo Messenger 8 an Vice Versa
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Jun 21, 2006)
I like yahoo messenger for it's intutive interface and support from gaim. Unlike skype I am unable to make PC to PC call from the net may be this from the limitation from the cisco router or from the proxy server. Though it supports UNICODE that includes support all indian languages including my mother tongue Tamil still I am unable to send Tamil UNICODE characters dirctly to yahoo messenger. I would appreciate more if they develop their chat client to by pass the proxy and/or firewalls to make PC to PC calls .
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Jun 20, 2006)
This beta release is very unstable, feels more of an alpha release then a beta, wonder if they didn't jump the gun on this one because of the M$ MSN Live release ?
I downloaded the "Canadian" version from Yahoo's website, a bit of a mistake. I wanted it to install Yahoo in d:\Internet\Yahoo, to which it did create the folder Yahoo! and then two subfolders, all of which are empty and then it installed everything else on my c: drive lol
But it's a beta :)

Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Jun 20, 2006)
Good messenger, stable, loads fast and doesn't use much memory with no plug-ins loaded.
Here's a way to get rid of the ad:
Using regedit, open up HKCU\Software\Yahoo\pager\YUrl. Create a new String entry named "Messenger Ad", and give it a value of "*" (no quotes).
It has the option to add MSN users, though the actual "connection" has not been enabled yet.
And it shows your real name, rather than your nickname as in previous versions.
Full thumbs up from me :)
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Jun 20, 2006)
Overall this is a good update. You have plugins now and a few little UI changes. But, its obviously to me that Yahoo doesnt care about having major UI changes or at least some evidence that its a new version.. Its been the same since 7.0.
As for the ad flamers.. How does ad's keep you from using the product? How do any ad's in any program keep you from using the product?? It does NOT keep you from IMing other people or other various tasks. And its not like they are advertising 2 for 1 pepsi.. Come on people..
Reviewing 8.0 Beta (Jun 20, 2006)
The plugins are great to work with and I liked the file share feature which has been boosetd to 1 GB which was previously 100 MB.

Reviewing 7.5.0.814 (May 20, 2006)
I have not been able to figure why yahoo messenger uses so much memory. It uses 35,000 k compared to 6,000 for ICQ, and 15,000 for AIM? My computer seems to run fine until I start the yahoo service and run it for about 6 hours or use it---then it screws up the computer so badly (cursor freezes, extremely slow typing, like the memory is gone and can take a minute to do a normal 2 second move, sometimes ruins my internet connection, won't allow shut down) that I have to manually shut down, reboot and do a system restore to get the computer back----maybe I can find an older version to download and install.
Reviewing 7.5.0.814 (May 18, 2006)
I'm really confused. I don't see any ad of the sort shown in that link. I have the latest version and I don't have any Adblocking software on my computer. Is that something country specific? Anyways as it is said - Never look at a gift horse in the mouth. If theres no ad then why should I complain? hehe

stick with 7.0. If you get this whatever you do, do not right click the buddy list. It will crash everytime.
edit:
Stated above is that windowblinds causes it to crash. I have always told windowblinds not to skin Yahoo Messenger. So...I still stand by the fact that this thing crashes when you right click the buddy list and am now lowering my rating. 7.0 was much better than this. at least it worked properly.
Reviewing 7.5.0.811 (Apr 26, 2006)
don't listen to those giving this a low rating because of the one add near the bottom of the messenger. The add they display is not intrusive at all, and are a yahoo products there selling, so its not that big of a deal. As well as memory its the same as it has always been,it uses about 7mb-10mb of memory. there are some small minor problems with it but nothing to realy complain about. It is a beta after all. This is probably the simplest messenger they have put out yet. I have had no problems with it crashing or any other problems. If your having problems go back to your last release. I dont know why the people on here have had problems with this but if a small minor add is the reason to rate this so low then you seriously need to grow up. if there is a problem let us know, but just because it has an add and thats the reason we shouldn't download it is just childish. dont even bother posting anything then, it realy make you look stupid.
Reviewing 7.5.0.811 (Apr 26, 2006)
Well I must agree ad-ware is s***. No one want's it. No one needs it. And no one should be subjected to it. However, let's be constructive for a change and help one-another out. What I mean is, take a look at the BB (beyond bloat) factor in AOL's "triton" (bloaton) client. Well, since we know that no amount of b*tching will make these companies remove ads, then whats the next best step? REMOVE THE CRAP yourself!! :):):) Problem is, HOW?
We see that someone made an ad-removal util for AIM triton, why can't somone step up to the plate and make one for Yahoo's client?? I've already removed the ads through firewalling/ad-blocking programs but it still leaves that ugly blank space. Anyone know of a utility that can rip-out the crap from Yahoo's clint!?
There's a lot of third party apps btw (GAIM, etc.) that connect to yahoo servers with no ads, but most of them are UGLY and don't have voice-chat capability.
Reviewing 7.5.0.811 (Apr 26, 2006)
You do realize that Betanews alot of the time doesnt include an updated screenshot. So please use the program before you just look at the screenshot and trash it on the spot. Ive been using the 7.5 beta and this is a great piece of software. Who cares if it has ads; do the ads keep you from doing anything? No.
Reviewing 7.5.0.811 (Apr 26, 2006)
Do yourself a favor and start using a website like meebo.com. This is becoming bloatware. Also, I understand that companies need to make money, but Google has found a terrific way of placing ads in unobtrusive ways...maybe Yahoo could follow suit.

I like Yahoo! Messenger but stay with 7.0. This version closes every time I right click. What is up with that?
Reviewing 7.5.0.811 (Apr 26, 2006)
To Joe Dirt:
If you actually took some time to sit down and work with this application, you can obviously tell that Yahoo is now working with PC to phone calling and have implemented this feature into builds 7.5 and up, each build corrects a bug and enhances the program's interface/features. Secondly, I don't want to hear nothing about Messenger looking the same as far as the UI, if anyone recalls before version 6.0, yahoo! Messenger was built off of the same GUI that Windows has had. Stop bashing this program because you've never tried it. Lastly, fine...good, so what if it has ads? As far as I can tell, they're Yahoo! Sponsored Ads, and if you don't like them, get a 3rd party app like AdMuncher or Ytunnel. AOL and MSN have ads, and nobody's griping about that. Yahoo Messenger needs to have some revenue come from a great service.
To Snoeks:
You can change the skin in Messenger -> Change Skin...awww, so sorry to dissapoint you, no points this round.
Personally, I give this app a 5 because I have tried it and worked with EVERY feature.
Reviewing 7.5.0.811 (Apr 26, 2006)

I've made 7 calls so far using 7.5 beta. With almost everyone of them, I struggled to have a proper conversation as the voice quality was so poor. After reading reviews of how good voice quality was, I thought I'd give it a go. I have very fast broadband access and have checked all the settings. I'm behind a firewall at work and thus have to use the http proxy option. Maybe other options have better quality but the http proxy settings are a joke. Waste of time. Waste of my $14 AUD. I thoroughly recommend using another service.

Although yahoo messenger has nice features, it is not reliable at all. after keeping yahoo messenger logged in for more than 4 or 5 hours it hangs.
Reviewing 7.5.0.333 Beta (Dec 14, 2005)
Yahoo! Messenger is a good client in my opinion. It's got a nice clean interface, and is pretty easy to use.
For those that like lot's of feature all in one, this is a great package. It's got everything you need in an IM client plus a bit more for advances users.
Unfortunately there isn't a second lighter version, because much of the content isn't very useful. The network is a bit bumpy, I've had lot's of issues with chatting, voice service, and some messaging. It's very slow on computers with less then a 800mhz processor.
Yahoo has the right idea with what they got, and could really make this a great client if they fix up the speed, reliability, and give some options for content.
Reviewing 7.5.0.333 Beta (Dec 13, 2005)
The more junk they add in the worse it gets. Yahoo needs to prioritize their development efforts better and bump up resolving network infrastructure issues to #1. The stability of the client had steadily declined as well. I find myself on BitWise and Skype (yes for IM) more and more lately.
Reviewing 7.5.0.333 Beta (Dec 13, 2005)
Yes smanofsteel76,
This beta does same here. I also noticed that this beta is not intended for United States residents. Its a beta for select European countries to test the pc to phone capabilities.

I love yahoo messenger but this release seems to close when I do certain things like change the tabs or change my status. Anyone having this problem?
Reviewing 7.5.0.333 Beta (Dec 13, 2005)
While Yahoo has the right idea in many ways it falls short of achieving what they wish. I commend them for the advancements but in the end, however, the weak points with Yahoo Messenger are security flaws and the simple fact that their network is unbearable unreliable. If it's not voice server issues there are issues of undelivered private text messages, etc. Some like to blame it on a person's computer when it isn't since the problem can come and go with no changes being made. In my case I gave up trying to send text PMs after 5 days of them simply not arriving where they should. I'll give the program a 3 because they are trying to make it better and when it works it's great BUT I can't rate it higher because Yahoo is too flakey and unreliable.
For people who want a reliable [in my experience] chat program I'd recommend CamFrog. To me it is Yahoo on steroids and it works!

Reviewing 7.0.0.437 (Dec 10, 2005)
The reason why they call it Yahoo Messenger with Voice is because now you can leave voicemails on someones account if that person is offline.
It's a new feature that works ok for me.
As far as this version being unstable, I don't have any problems with it at all. I have it installed for weeks now and it hasn't crashed once.
So as far as I'm concerned, it's full marks from me.
Reviewing 7.0.0.437 (Dec 9, 2005)
I've been using Yahoo messenger for years without any issue, and now I'm having a very frustrating experience with the 7.0 version.
First of all, why did they rename it to "Yahoo! Messenger with Voice" ?
It's been years it has voice support! Sounds rather silly, but well...
The real problem is that this version is so unstable ! While I'm writing this review it has crashed once already.
And for no reason, now, the audibles refuse to work...
I'm not even talking about the IMvironments that randomly won't start, telling me that I'm not in the same country as the person I'm talking with... even though we live in the SAME effing city !
Not to mention the fact that the integrated games work only with one of my contacts...
Seriously, I'm expecting way better from a company like Yahoo.

to the poster doing the net2phone it is a computer to computer call alot like another voice chat in a way. and it is doing it cause it is a bug a bug yahoo is working on but it. the new features of YIM have always had problems til about the second release of a build after they have finalized the code itself. i have been using YIM for about 7 years now and every beta has run stable til i test the new features so it isn't just you it is alot of people.
Reviewing 7.0.0.247 Beta (May 30, 2005)
I am having the most frustrating thing with YIM.
Installed the latest app, beta and stable, and both of them give me this error:
Everytime I go to "Make a net2phone call" as soon as I enter the first phone number digit the proggie crashes on me!!!!!!!! AAAAAGHHHHHHHHHH
Install, uninstall, reinstall, you name it, the same exace thing happens on every phone call attempt.
Anyone have any clues on why it is crashing as soon I punch in the first digit?
Yahoo's support site SUCKS THE BIG ONE...........

I like Yahoo Messenger (after you get rid of the junk), however, if you use this beta back your computer up first!!!
They are also bloting it way to much. To many "features" and it is just becoming another junk IM program like MSN.

Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 18, 2005)
Well, yeah, its good. Don't see too much of a difference for a change in the main version number. The lil thing I noticed and which is actually a step backwards is that now we cannot search for a friend.
Will have to go back to version 6 if u have lost a friend ;) or are looking for one at random ... unless someone could point me in the right direction.
Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 18, 2005)
this is much better than msn messenger for one,and yes serrebi, if you do not use your yahoo id, why do you bother with installing the latest beta version of yahoo messenger.if you dont use a product, dont bother writing reviews about it.atleast dont give 1/5 without using a product.i recommend yahoo messenger to any one who enjoys chatting.
Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 18, 2005)
This program would not connect for me.
During the instal it claimed it couldn't communicate with the download server, so it did not really complete instalation[what do you expect from yahoo!] anyway
After entering my yahoo id, it would not connect, told me to config proxies, everything is open here, so there should not be a prob.
I quickly logged in from the web, double checking that my yahoo id was still active[hell I never use it lol], it was, could not log in, even when looking at there crappy confusing help system for asistance.
Maybe they should do more in-house testing before releasing to the general public.
Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 18, 2005)
What I like the most is the ability to rename a user name (without using a 3rd party add-on). I don't know why but MSN IM users often choose silly or offensive names.
Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 18, 2005)
Ok all you crazy fanboys and haters, here is the low down.
This programs does what is says, it does have some extra (for some unnecesary) features, but that is part of why its free.
If your computer is having a bad time with it, that means either something is mixing wrongly with it win98, norton av, etc or your computer is just plain old.
If you don't like it use the free alternatives (e.i trillian, gaim) or just simply use an older probably vulnerable version of yahoomessenger.
Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 17, 2005)
i think the new version is pretty clean looking after you configure it.
Reviewing 7.0.0.242 Beta (May 17, 2005)
I am disappointed that the big 3 - AIM/MSN/YAHOO all of which I use - are well on their way on the road of bloatware. I do not care for their ads, annoying "Logon Screen" website popups with news etc, I do not care for their music services, nor use their address books. Their large buttons for features which I have and will never use (games, news, stocks, alerts, and other useless features) are only pushing users to install more programs to hide or remove these bothersome 'features'. I use the big 3, but in each new version, it's more ads, more waste of space, more junkware...
A focus needs to be put on user-friendly and satisfaction. UI customization, modularization, resources, and speed is where instant messaging should be right now. None of them have made those advances. *hugs IRC but still a big-3 user*

5 rating - In general for all 6.x versions. Basically now Yahoo! Msgr is much more fun than any of those dull clients like Trillian. Its this so called 'bloatware' that makes using Ymsgr worthwile. And as for this particular build, well, some update is better than no update as I always say :)

This is most stable version yet. Obviously he doesn't know how to upgrade Y!Messenger properly.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1922 (Feb 28, 2005)
Nicely looking, but bloated. Requires the Internet Explorer is the default browser for the avatar functionality. Also the Yahoo! Messenger for the other platforms (Mac, Linux) is not kept up-to-date and is more than a year old.

Tested, worked fine... But I still keep Trillian. Btw I don't know how this soft can crash so many things on your comp. It mostly a problem with your comp, not Yahoo!
And Symantec AV is a crap... Just use a real powerful AV like Kaspersky or F-Secure...

Reviewing 6.0.0.1921 (Feb 19, 2005)
Far better program than either MSN or AIM. Suffers a bit from ICQish bloat, but it'd need to be a lot more bloated to be nearly as useless as the alternatives.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1750 (Jan 3, 2005)
this is a good program. It has a good interface and the game feature is really nice. The only things i think this program needs is some personalizing features, like custome emoticons and display names. other then that its a great program to keep in touch with all my friends and family.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1750 (Oct 17, 2004)
This program definatley sucks... It crashes so much, cam and audio conferences are of worst quality, emoticons are low-res. Chatrooms are filled with bots, and soon free Hotmail accounts are going to reach about 240MB the fact that will put Yahoo! out of business...
Reviewing 6.0.0.1750 (Aug 18, 2004)
I have been using yahoo messenger since it started i thought they were making progress untill now. Too cluttered, but some of the features are good such as contact renaming and offline messages. I use it as a backup for when MSN goes down. It's still very buggy, but looks good. If Yahoo was to fix all the bugs, i'd give it a 4.

By new version, they improved what? Decreased CPU usage? Decereased memory usage? NO. They just added some unnecessery features. It really sucks computer resources.

It's also stable.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1710 (Aug 4, 2004)
I'm in love with this program now.
I don't use it for many other features (concerning outside parties, like games and such) - though the radio is pretty nifty and I've used that a few times. I've used the video, the little fun stuff, the sound/voice as well as file transfer (probably THE best)....I'd recommend YIM to everyone. And with 100 megs of free email now....I use yahoos webmail almost moreso than my own *paid* msn accounts (though they are getting raised too).
Still, review wise - I think this is program is pretty solid. I have 2 PCs and its never crashed on either.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1671 (Jun 28, 2004)
I have been using Yahoo Messenger for a long while and thought it was ok. It had all the features I needed, like file transfer, web cam support, etc. As for voice conference, the quality has always been rather poor and as an alternative for that I've been using Skype.
Talking about the new version, there is no way it can be called stable. It crashed three times in a row the first day I downloaded and installed it. The support of SMS is very poor. The online help is not covering all the newly added features. The menus are modified to the point where an experienced user (of the older versions) has difficulty finding what he needs - absolutely against the usability principles. The whole thing looks rather like a beta version but by no means a completed product. The only thing I liked is the built-in Launchcast (online radio). There seems to be a tendency in Yahoo Messenger to s*** to the entertaining side at the expense of more important functionality support.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1671 (Jun 26, 2004)
i have been using yahoo messenger for 6 years and this is probably the best IM client ever released by Yahoo. Cool animated smileys and other important features are added into this version. worth a try...
Reviewing 6.0.0.1671 (Jun 18, 2004)
To date Yahoo is my personal fav as far as IM's go. Having said that I hope they dont go into a wild feature mode as did ICQ which turned what was once the top into a sinking bloated IM. The audio thing is funny but I would have axed it. Still I like and use Yahoo for both biz and personal communication.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1671 (Jun 17, 2004)
There are some problems with new YM and old version too:
1. New YM use too many display space, it must give option to resize it more smaller.
2. The SMS not support all operator yet. ICQ is more broader.
3. If the SMS receiver have no more money it will make blocking the next SMS. and there is no way to activate/normalize this again. so the receiver still can receive the sms.
It is very anonying.
4. SMS address book need to be improved, instead of only in drop down list only. it is difficult if we have many address/number.
5. Voice chat need to be improved.
ETC
Reviewing 6.0.0.1671 (Jun 17, 2004)
it's alright better than messenger 5.6 by far. the new interface was long over due. I like the shoutcast radio feature that is a cool feature, and i also like how you can show as invisible to someone but appear online to someone else. Good job Yahoo. Although you need to make it so you can use the older skins as well like the ones you can download from other sites.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1671 (Jun 17, 2004)
Love the new 6.x version. Easy to use and stable. The audibles rock.
The Yahoo "Doodle" enviroment acts as a whiteboard using Macromedia Flash.
The numerous menu items are a bit much and needs more skins. Otherwise a solid rating here for usability.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1643 (May 25, 2004)
What I hate about this version: They install shortcuts everywhere in your computer just like the old AIM, let's see -- 4 in your favorites, 2 in your desktop, 2 in your quick launch, 2 in your start menu and 2 in your document settings folder -- there is no way to gracefully turn it off; I can no longer choose to see my buddies by their screen name instead of nickname, this sucks since I have 3 Irene's on my list; software is slow... on the brighter side, I love the new smileys and audibles, I can play with the new audibles all day long, another great innovations but yet pack with all the annoyance AOL used to have.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1643 (May 25, 2004)
buddy windows is too big and can't resize smaller. No option to auto minimize to system tray during startup. (like ICQ, msn, etc.) I have to close the program (minimize) everytime I start my machine.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1643 (May 24, 2004)
Still my messenger of choice, just please remember we don't want another ICQ. The inability to resize the messenger to the size I have always kept it is a big deal to me and hope that is remedied. Close friend hardly uses Yahoo anymore due to the fact that it constantly is kicked off. I had the same aggravation til I started using broadband.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1555 Beta (Apr 28, 2004)
bloated piece of crap now, you cant re-size the main buddy window any smaller. The new features are ok, but totally not needed. Hopefully it will be better by final.

I am giving it a 5 now due to the enormity of the upgraded feature set and extended FUN........that is exactly how my friends rply to it.......
Avatar building works "thumbs uop"
Sound files work.AWSOME major step aheasd from the old days with phone cow bell etc.....
Why is the Yahoo doodle not included??
Contact info should be synced with log in user id..which BTW does not carry over to the site yet "auto login to account"
This is the best functionality yet...tried the SMS messaging, was able to send one, next two give me error messages with country code, which does not reply, seems repeat actions is causing problems.
Great Job guys.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1555 Beta (Apr 27, 2004)
Nicer GUI, with options to use the classic.
But the problems is:
- The windows resize have limit. it is not good. and also the default window size is too big.
- SMS have too much limit: need to work with more operators, and reply to yahoo account sometimes it failed. and we cannot continue sending the sms via YM.
- need to reduce resources used.
- download better if full installer. so we can installed it easily over dialup.
and others improvements.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1555 Beta (Apr 26, 2004)
3 Stars from a paying Yahoo! client.
Program is now over 11mb in size and is bloated and out of control. The interface though new, is a mimic of the Microsoft XP Bubble Look. Thank god they left classic view in tact, however it appears it needs some work from the myriad of changes. Not sure why I need the new music interface as Winamp continues to shine for me. They do have an option to remove it from the new tabs. The new e-mail interface is at least worthy of comment and is what kept my rating from being lower. It appears to use your current e-mail client when you select e-mail to a person on your contact list, I half expected it to go to your Yahoo! account to send the e-mail. Lastly the weather tabs and news tabs still refer to an obviously outdated set of WebPages that have seen better days, so instead of a new interface, it still reads the Yahoo! webpage for the news and weather which has always been less than acceptable unless you make the messenger main window quite large.
My recommendations, cut the bloat out, it’s just wasted. Put some encryption in the program for us security minded folks and finally stop trying to make your application look like Microsoft. Be your own company with your own look and feel, what I am saying is be original. To modernize your program, does not mean make it like everyone else, it means be innovative and creative.
Reviewing 6.0.0.1555 Beta (Apr 26, 2004)
The interface is definitely more refined, yet bulkier in some way. I hate to see the feature of displaying friends' ids instead of names gone. Over all I feel great about the new release. I just hope it has the webcam integration like MSN, and it will surely rock! 4 stars for now!
Reviewing 5.6.0.1358 (Feb 2, 2004)
It's quite a memory hog, had some issues with it. Not worth downloading (yet).
@Mikee4fun: we're here to sort BAD software from GOOD software. This is BAD software, even though you CAN make it work. It doesn't have to be completely broken to be bad. It's disfunctional, and that's enough to make it BAD. At least as a BETA VERSION.
--> sorry for all the caps.
Reviewing 5.6.0.1358 (Jan 9, 2004)
Garp, you are a true lamer! If you can't afford memory which is peanuts in cost, you shouldn't be using a computer. But I forgot, you must have a Emachine lol =P
Reviewing 5.6.0.1358 (Jan 8, 2004)
This program is nice and easy to use, the chat rooms aren't too bad. The use of Voice and Camera options are quite good. It doesn't compare to MSN6 however, due to Yahoo's lack of qualities such as customised smilies and display options. But Yahoo has its own qualities such as its unique smilies and services. But to be honest, everyone I know uses MSN6 and only Yahoo as an alternative.
Reviewing 5.6.0.1358 (Jan 8, 2004)
Mikee4Fun, I think the point is for a small program like this to work without having to buy additional memory, go to a command prompt, or download additional software such as y!pipe. If it requires ANY of the above, I consider the software to be a failure. Noobs are allowed to use programs too, and should have the ability to. There's no reason for it to be so buggy, and there is no reason for it to be such a hog. That's just simple fact. Defend it and give it five stars if you want to, but for me it's just a 2/5.
Reviewing 5.6.0.1358 (Jan 7, 2004)
I have been with yahoo messenger for a long time, and so far nothing beats the yahoo voice chatroom's and also it's webcam works very well. The bad parts are the client is buggy and filled with ads, and there is a limit of 1mb when sending files. Over-all it is the best messenger, I like it better then msn (although msn should still be used for sending large files).

I absolutely love this program. the IMenvironments are very good and are actually fun (stuff like "doodle" is innovative and simple to use). the emoticons are also very neat and offer a great variety to the user. Perhaps the thing that stands out the mosty thought is the SuperWebcam feature. When using a highspeed connection it simply puts netmeeting and all others I have seen to SHAME). The sound however is not as good as netmeeting and peoples voices do not get through sometimes. However, it deserves a 4.5... but since i cannot put that, I will round up :)
Reviewing 5.5 Final (Aug 17, 2002)
This is a great chat program with few exceptions. The newest version does not work in WinXP as the prior betas do. You MUST set the compatibility to Windows98/ME. The exceptions are that you can't search your address book to add buddies like ICQ and MSN Messenger. This latest version adds advertising on the pop-up notifications. That is why I rate it a 3, otherwise it would be a 5.
Reviewing 5.5 Final (Aug 16, 2002)
Word brother if it weren't for Yahoo I would not be able to deal with this long term relationship I am currently in aswell. I mean IMing each other no one could last, voice chat a little longer but the awesome webcam features (vastly improved!) make it all an ease.
The betas sorta sucked since they were litered with bugs but the Final is all worth it, less crashes, faster and better quality webcam streamsm, unbootable (for the moment lol) and so much more. Sweet a** interface and nice smilies which now got some animation.

Overall, great, non-annoying program. I'm not a webcam user, but the masses seem to love it. I would like to see them invest more time in developing an efficient, effective Whiteboard addition. Jabber has beat them to the punch on this one, if it ever comes out of beta. As far as interoperability goes, it's not a programming issue, the business people to work it out. They can't just add a hook to MSN or AOL chat services and expect to get away with it!!!!

Use *Trillian* (www.trillian.cc) in order to log onto your YM, MSN, AIM and ICQ accounts in one single soft.
Also supports IRC. Works like a charm :)
Other than that YM 5.0.0 build 1015 is a good IM soft.
Reviewing 4.1.0 Build 993 (Jun 26, 2001)
Is it just me or everytime I go into Preferences it logs you out !?! Never used to do that. Apart from that it's just getting better and better. Shame us UK users can't phone the states for free anymore.
Reviewing 4.1.0 Build 993 (Jun 26, 2001)
Great new webcam feature... Worked RIGHT out of the 'box' and around the firewall at work... No configuration issues at all...
As for the smilies...

Combined with the long awaited archiving of messages. A great program.

That's not cool... Why did this cut my review? Perhaps the combination is some kind of code for this site. Let's try it with spaces:
Reviewing 4.0.0 Build 967 (Jun 7, 2001)
I don't see why so many people have problems with it - I'm running a P200mmx, 64ram, 4&3gig HDs, and I never have it crash on me. I use AIM too, and that never has problems either, tho I hate AIM... ICQ only gave me troubles once or twice, but that's probably cuz my cache was full from leaving my comp on for a few days straight... I've used them on Win2k on the same system, no prob. I'm using Win98SE again now though, cuz it runs best with my low-end system. Oh, and I used them under WinME, same thing - no messing up. Anyhow, Yahoo is my fav after ICQ and 'maybe' MSN...
Reviewing 4.0.0 Build 967 (Jun 7, 2001)
Chat & email notification makes it worthwhile (yes, you can access the same room via the web, but this program makes them faster and easier to use). Sure, your friends probably don't use it but if you chat online, using their chat rooms you'll meet people who do. Promising.

For some reason my previous review didn't work. If you would like a list of new smileys that I have found, send an e-mail to n2flyinplanes@yahoo.com and I'll try to send a list to you. :o)
Reviewing 3.0.0.825 Beta (Sep 19, 2000)
This build is alot more stable than the last one, but there are still some bugs to iron out, but none that I have seen so far that are too bad..Fixed the Messenger to Chat Room Option which prevoisly caused yahoo to close...overall I think they are doing an excellent job...
Reviewing 3.0.0.825 Beta (Sep 19, 2000)
Yahoo Messenger is quite nice, but as said below, noone seems to use it. MSN Messenger is much more streamlined and integrates nicely into the MS stuff most folks already use, so that messenger is a better choice for now. Once the seems-like-it's-taking-forever universal IM protocol gets implemented, then the messenger of personal choice will be up for grabs. :)
Reviewing 3.0.0.814 Beta (Aug 19, 2000)
Yahoo! Messenger is AWESOME!!! Being a beta still, I would like the following bugs fixed. When Switching from one version to another (due to updates) It will not save all of your settings. For example under appearance, it still has the default settings take over. It also will uncheck the box stating "allow others to see your ip address". Also Yahoo has an ad in the chat section when you enter a chat room. I would like to see that go and have more chat options on the top possible mirc-like options. Also my smiley faces do not show up when I send them to others they can see them, but I cannot, when they send them to me, they can see them, I still cannot. I run it at work and win95 displays them fine, but here at home on windows 2000 no luck yet!! Proxy support is great! looks great! small in size! Not many ads, unlike aol, icq and msn. I love yahoo!
Reviewing 3.0.0.812 Beta (Aug 12, 2000)
No one uses it. MSN does have the universal buddy list. MSN does have voice chat. MSN has free long distance calls. MSN integrates nicely in the MSN homepage. MSN notifies me of Hotmail AND Pop Mail MSN fits nicely withing Outlook Express. MSN has the smallest footprint of them all (all mentioned). MSN Mobile Pager Device Handling. MSN slso does a nice job with file transfer. I will stick with MSN.
Reviewing 3.0.0.776 (Apr 10, 2000)
Yahoo Messenger is an excellent program.
ICQ is big for nothing. MSN's got ads. Don't even talk about AOL IM...
YM has voice chat that ICQ does not have. Voice chat is even hands-free. Your contact list is stored remotely so it's always handy compared to ICQ where you gotta re-add everyone and wait for their permissions everytime you reinstall the soft or the whole OS.
YM is simply the best chatting tool out there. Period.
Reviewing Build 764 (Mar 16, 2000)
Yahoo Messenger rocks!! Aol = ads, icq = aol, yahoo = proxy support which I can't seem to get the others to work, easy install, great potential, NO ADS!! Yahoo has been great with adding updates that you want if you email them! what else ya need or want for that fact??
Reviewing Build 762 (Mar 13, 2000)
It's ok until you can't get any of your friends to use it. Any company that wants to compete with ICQ and AOL should ask themselves... "Why bother?"
Reviewing Build 762 (Mar 13, 2000)
This tweaker is best programm for Savage cards. I use this programm as my favorite.
Reviewing Build 762 (Mar 12, 2000)
This program has ALWAYS been buggy for me. I use AOL Instant Messenger instead, even though it's extremely buggy also. I think they should make all these programs work with each other. Like a universal IM standard or something.
Reviewing Build 760 (Feb 29, 2000)
Before this build, Yahoo crashed very often under Windows2000 (i don't know why ), but restarting it was enough to use it anew. Now, with this build, when it crash and i want to restart it, i got an error message "CoCreateInstance for the My Yahoo DLL Failed" and i must restart the computer. So i prefer to use the old version. For me, this build is worse than the previous one :-(
Yahoo msngr is going worse..every time..always hangs..no maintainace
