This version is not that stable as previous versions, but the new UI looks good.
Now they have both the concise and traditional interface which can satisfy more users I think. Personally,I used to using the traditional skins.
Split view changed a lot. I prefer the previous one. Still as fast as usual.

I mainly use the ultimate version, but I always keep a lite USB version in my computer. IE engine takes more resource compared with firefox engine which is the default engine I use.
Still as fast as usual and the AD blocker is powerful.

MikeTechno

MikeTechno reviewed v2013 Beta 6 on Feb 5, 2013

Beta 6 - Split view feature still isn't working under Windows 7. Split view will appear on the screen for a second when Split View is selected from the menu, then will instantly disappear and go back to single view. Also, when the browser is initially run, Split view will also appear for a second on the screen briefly and then disappear as well, before the browser is finished loading and shows the home screen. Neither one of these things should be happening at all.

Downloaded. Install seemed to hang, then suddenly extracted files and installed but very slow. I have 12gb mem running on a quad core...system hung on install, could not break out. Power down and ran uninstall, very slow. Cleaned Registry to make sure no residuals remain. This pgm is NOT ready for testing or use, IMHO!

Horrid skins, AdBlock doesn't work and overall, just too frantic and a bit confusing. I think most are looking for simplicity and Avant doesn't provide it.

Hall9000

I don't know what you broke but this version works! As in it works unlike the previous versions that forced me to actually roll back to version 10 build 121. That's how bad the previous versions were messing up. So, for now I'm giving it a full rating of 5.

Oops! Where ils the lock toolbars option?

Hum, always end up withs same post. Anyway, when I installed this version the original skin doesn't show the lock toolbars option but if I use the other skins then it shows it. Weird. :P

it is still better then stock IE IMO.

Four stars because it wants to be more than what it is which is a shell

Using the version 10 build 121. :P All versions after it simply refuse to work properly on my computer. Using XP Pro 32 bit. I simply can't find what the hell is killing the latest versions. Interestingly they work properly on my Win 7 64 bit computer and even an old laptop running XP pro. Go figure. I will still give it a high rating. Wish someone could help me find out what the hell is going wrong.

Avant is my favorite browser. It works stably and fast under firefox and IE engine. I haven't tried chrome engine yet.Chrome engine has too many processes, which would occupy more CPU and Memory. don't like it.
This version use less resource than the previous version. I saw they improved performance of Memory Management from its changelog. Well done.

I'm having so many problems with Avant that I will do what I never expected to do, give it a review of only 1.

When it opens it does NOT open the home page. Sometimes it will simply go half black on the screen. The close tab on the tabs don't work. When set as the main driver it does not respond to when I click an email link as it would normally do. Even THIS release is the same.

On this computer I'm using XP Pro with service pack 3. On an other computer I use Win7 and I still have problems there.

Those problems happen no matter what rendering engine I use.

At least Orca is still working... for now.

Wow! Avant 20011 build 27 is great! I never thought I would like the Split Screen feature but once you try it out, you will never want to go back to a browser that doesn't have it. It's just as useful as tabbed browsing is and just as valuable. I have to hand it to Avant, they have managed to put themselves right back at the very top of the browser list for me. Would still like to see them integrate a sophisticed scren capture and annotation tool into the browser, the way Maxthon has. Other than that though, this browser is right back on the top of the list for me. Very well done Avant. Keep innovating and keep up the great work.

Very nice clean easy to use browser with all the features you'd expect. Fast smooth loading of pages with no problems streaming videos from youtube etc.
I honestly couldn't find many flaws while using it for a month or so. I would have liked to have seen better themes. The ones you get are all too similar. Avant should take a page out of Mozilla or Opera's book and make it more customisable and more pleasing to look at.
All being said, a great browser and i would recommend it to anyone.

A most terrific Web Browser. This browser is an up and coming browser but it has come a long way. I've followed this browser for a few years now and always keep it on my desktop to use if I've ever gotten bored with Firefox or just wanted to use something different. I really love this browser and just downloaded the newest version that was released December 2009, haven't used it or the last version or 2 in the past 4-8 months. But I was very satisfied with Avant when I did use it. Avant is just as good as Firefox and could be even better if the developers continued to shoot over the top!! Avant gets 5 Stars!!! AVANT has ALWAYS been one of my TOP 2 FAVORITE BROWSERS!!

I've always been a sceptic regarding alternative browsers to IE. I've use Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, and many others, too many to number. But after using Avant, there is no need to look any further. They looked at what a power user really needs, and incoorperated it into the browser. Not only that, it sits on top of the IE, so keeping your favorites and security settings will not be a problem.
Not only that, avant has a very effective pop up killer, and so many features (easy to use) that when i go back to IE at other computers, i really dont know how i used them before. Download it, and see for yourself. 2 thumbs up :)

plenty of reasons why you wouldnt want to use firefox and still need to use an ie based one.

However, this release is still buggy. Roboform bar isnt skinned correctly and you can move the browser around leaving the browser page (image) in the original position. Stick with the previous release version as that works fine.

I noticed that the usual buttons to open a page or selectively close one or all pages aren't at their usual places but I can live with that but it would be fun to have them ALL visible. To my knowledge.. As long as you don't have the piece of crap called IE6 installed.. Trident isn't that bad.. It renders everything out there that 99% of the internet's users would want to use.. Just because it doesn't render HTML5 yet doesnt mean its behind it just means other engines are fast..

I will not use a piece of software that compares itself to other software and makes false allegations about that software. The mouse zoom on IE8 works just fine for me. In the product description, it claims that the mouse zoom does not work. Hmmm !. Not for me.

I suggest you edit your post Dana as it is not comparing itself to IE8. There is a bug for the mouse zoom which has been fixed for IE7 users but not IE8 users.

Avant is probably one of the best, if not the best, IE based browsers. Rating it down when you havent even used it because you misread a bit of text in the changelog isnt helping anyone.

MikeTechno, after installing the lastest Avant version, build 21, I just tried to go to GOG.com and the page loaded normally. In fact very fast. Default settings? I'd try changing those one at a time to see what setting is making it blow up. Anyway, I'm still in love with this browser. Still rates 5.

MikeTechno

MikeTechno reviewed v11.7 Build 21 on Dec 29, 2008

I just figured out what the problem was with Avant. It wasn't with Avant at all. Avant runs using the underlying IE engine that you have installed on your system. The machine that I was having the problem with has the IE8 beta 1 installed on it. My laptop which has IE7 installed on it will pull up Gog.com just fine using Avant. The problem turns out to be with IE8, not with Avant at all. Thanks for the help. I guess I need to pay closer attention to what underlying version of IE I have installed on my system.

MikeTechno

MikeTechno reviewed v11.7 Build 19 on Dec 11, 2008

I like this new build 19 and all its bug fixes for sure. I would like to see Avant add the spell checking features that FireFox and now Opera have built-in. I would also like to see everyone follow the lead of Maxthon and incorporate a Screen Capture utility right into the browser's Tools menu. Maxthon 2.x has a Capture Region feature that is just incredibly useful and powerful. I would like to see Avant come out with an answer to this feature themselves. Avant is an excellent browser though, no question about it. I put it on all my systems.

I used to be a fond user of this progie since several years and it rocked. However, since last 6 to 7 releases it sucks. Time to time stucking my CPU without any obvious reason. Quit-off while working and other many such problems.

Lastly, I decided to shift on Mozilla Firefox which works perfectly in the same environment.

Orca Browser developed by the same team, works perfect above Firefox but Avant ... I better be off.

Hall9000

Hall9000 reviewed v11.7 Build 17 on Oct 31, 2008

At the moment I'm running AB ver 11.7 build 15 and it's severely pissing me off. It freezes and sends the cpu to 100%. When I check in Windows Task Manager it shows two instances of Avant Browser instead of the normal one instance. It's as though, when I open a new tab, like after clicking on a link or even simply clicking "Refresh" that Avant tries to open a second seperate Avant browser.

Now in THIS version that I'm using this problem is happening a lot more than it used to in the older versions. I wonder if it's not some interaction with Internet Explorer causing Avant Browser to act this way. After all, EI used to open a second IE window instead of a new tab like it can do now. Maybe that's a clue to the problem? I'm just to damn lazy to register at the Avant forum. Anyway, I hope this helps, and because I honestly believe Avant to be the best browser around I'll still give it a 5.

Before I forget I'm running XP Pro, service pack 3 on a Dell Evo with a 3.2 ghz cpu with 2.75 GB of ram

Maybe it is just me but ever since 11.6 build 16 this browser has been very buggy and very unstable. I NEVER had problems or chrashes with this app up to build 16 but after that it seems like this things is crashing right and left. What ever it was they changed from build 16 on has made this app very unstable and prone to crashing every couple of hours. This is just simply an excellent product all the way around. The browser is wonderful. I can't wait for them to integrate a screen capture utility the way Maxthon has done now in their v2.1.x releases. Once Avant catches up on that front, this will be the best browser on the market. They are nearly to that point now. I love this broswer and I use it almost 100% of the time when surfing. I put this browser on every single machine I use. Very highly recommended. The only reason Avant has a rating of 3.3/5 is because so many hate the idea that it used the IE engine. While Avant does have its quirks I still find it vastly superior to IE7 and even to most other borwsers out there. I did notice that some pages look weird as in the text being huge and even overlapping. Should be interersting to see how the "newr" version of Avant will handle that proble. And now if only Orca came out.

Avant Browser is the best browser in the world. I have been using it for a year now, and I love it. I have read some reviews on www.download.com, and on this website, and some of the people that use Avant Browser are always saying that the Menu Bar which has File, Edit, and View is located on the right side of the browser window. In order to change that I discovered a while ago that you must go to View, and Compact style, so the Menu Bar changes to the left side of the browser window. I hope that I have helped out many people using Avant Browser. I would recommend this browser to everyone, and it should be installed on every computer. It is way much better than Internet Explorer.

This is the best of the IE browser shells. It has been around for ages. I stopped useing it a while back due to popup windows showing as tabs, but that has been fixed. Maxthon 1&2 drove me crazy so i came back to Avant and I am very happy i did so.
The screen shot is a little old. The new interface is not 100% to my liking. The header bar is the same colour as the body making it difficult at a glance to see an grab it to move the window. The menu is not on a floating toolbar so it sticks to the unusual place of the right corner. Apart from that it handles everything well and is highly configurable. Found no bugs so far. Although I wish the IE Developer toolbar would work with it.

I will occassionally switch to another browser if I need to for one of their features that Avant doesn't have (yet), but the majority of the time, this is the one that I use. Rock solid, stable, clean, fast, smart interface, very easy to use. Hard to beat it. If you aren't using it yet...you should be.

Good solid browser that rescued me from IE6 at work. Build 8 finally fixed the slightly clunky mouse-trails feature generated by build 4, while this build is merely a few fixes.

I still find the browser-wide freezes annoying - browsing Digg is particularly painful - but everything else is fine.

The stand-out feature in Avant for me is the uber time-saving Autofill. Not only does it save your logins and passwords for entry into whatever web-page needs them but it goes one step futher than any other browser I've tried and actually completes the login authentication for you; all with one click on the bookmark. In an enterprise environment where timed sessions are the norm this is a HUGE frustration saver!

Other browsers should copy this feature immediately.

If you aren't using this browser yet, you really do need to give it a try. This and the latest version of Maxthon 2.x.x are my two favorite browsers. What the HECK would you need 300 tabs open for? That's insane!

I use Avant every day at work and am constantly impressed by it's speed and robustness. My only criticism would be the occassional browser-wide freezes which happen loading new pages; would a multi-threaded approach relegate this to the tab ONLY?

You have to learn to use this one, that's all.

This is amazingly stable, functional and logical browser. Plus highly customizable. The core being IE, it's just a little slower than Gecko-based browsers, but not significantly. That's not Avant Browser's fault, but the fact that IE engine is a bit slower than Gecko. Thanks to many translators, the GUI can be localized to 28 different languages. The skins availability is good; you can make your Avant look like just the way you want.

@ tuneslover-- most IE competitors that utilize its rendering engine-- will by nature have tons of additional features... they remove nothing(except for security risks that is) + only 'add more' functions & improve and/or speed up already existing ones.

In fact, IE loses functions w/ every upgrade: MS instead of fixing inherent problems just tends to scale back default settings... they figure if you don't download, allow common forum functions, view multimedia content not created by them, etc. you won't get infected....yeah, if one doesn't cross the street, one won't get run over.....

horsecharles reviewed v11.5 Build 12 on Jul 1, 2007

I agree with 2xD to the letter. Additionally, another huge peeve is what they did with Favorites:
changed to new format AND made saving links more cumbersome with extra clicks.-- if i wanted a radically new browser i'd pick a NON-IE-based one.

What one looks mainly with an "IE-based browser":

1. Seamless use while changing functionalities as much as possible(except of course, to fix subpar IE processes, inherent IE/Windows bugs & for improved security)...for system-critical internet work, many sites abolutely require IE. However, it may crash at some of those sites due to bugs... or may not fully work because- in the name of security MS has dumbed it down: often in default and/or hard-coded fashion. Even then, it may still remain less secure than competing browsers.
IE won't be able to be forsaken completely though-- its competitors will also have issues with some sites / web apps: at best, one could try Avant et al as a first choice(s) & IE as a backup alternative to it/them(Even if you like other engines like Moz, Opera, etc., some IE variant is still needed at times. So.........

2. One needs auto-complete/Forms/recently-typed/PW/Fave/History/Cookie functions & folders to not change + pick up where one left off after crashing or having to switch browsers, and as well to not lose previous research placeholders / links w/o mahual syncing / location switching & searching.

I have gone back to Avant after a stint using Maxathon RC3 (and earlier versions). Maxathon was buggy on some sites. Particulary on encrypted sites where certificates were required. Plus it couldnt disply the roboform bar (minor as you dont need it).

In reality, most of these internet explorer alternatives are similar and its just a matter of taste to which you prefer. I have tried many and find pros and cons with each. No one browser is perfect. So its a case of knowing what is important to you and picking the one that best fits your needs. At this moment, thats avant for me (although ie7 with a number of plugins is not a bad bet either nowadays).

It is a good program, I have used it before and I hope this difficulty will be sorted out soon. BTW, even when MS doesn't support Windows 98 SE any more many of us old users keep supporting it using third party programs and utilities like this, there is a lot of them on the Internet, many of them cross-platform new ones. In single user machines (not in networks) programs are the main thing and the OS is a secondary one, so the "oldie" keeps being useful because it copes with our needs and we feel happy and at ease with it (no built-in remote access for single user machines is not relevant and means only no virus danger, so you may install and use it without antivirus and even without firewall).

My favourite browser since after GoSurf. It beats GoSurf. I am surprised to know that people are considering IE7 better than this application. IE7 is introducing the features now which are available in this application since years. Other thing is IE7 lacks speed on loading same pages. I would rather prefer to use the combination of IE6 with Avant. It is much more stable, rich in features and fast, a little bit bloated nowadays though (un-necessary buttons and compact mode).

To keep introducing new features the author must himself use a couple of popular browsers like FireFox, Maxthon etc. This would not be leeching just to feel the strength of the new advanced features and providing these features in this application. Like in FireFox I can hide/show individual foto or flash animation with a right-click on any page whereas in this application either I hide them all or display them all without having a control individually.

Further, opening certain sites like www.enfull.com or www.fixdown.com it sometimes open many blank pages without any reason. These might be an attempt for Pop-ups. But even after that this application deserves a FIVE Rating due to the hard work of the author for keeping it freeware and frequent updates. Keep it up buddy.

I don't have to give any instructions to set those up right out of the box. The author is obsessed with adding crappy features like compact mode and screwing up things that worked fine in v10 yet he completely ignored the most important security feature in a modern browser a Phishing Filter! IE7, Opera and Firefox 2 all have this. Now Avant has Firefox icons for an IE based browser, a uselessly small URL Bar and the utterly useless AvantFind Search. Every other major browser uses a normal search feature by default! IE7 uses Live Search, Firefox and Opera use Google. But Avant uses some yahoo add filled crap search called AvantFind. I really liked AB until I found out about the user agent insertion of Avant Browser. There are two registry keys that have to be deleted to get rid of AB in the user agent ID string for Internet Explorer. Here is a link to the posting on the AB forums regarding the fix. Read toward the bottom. >>>http://forum.avantbrowser.com/viewtopic.php?t=14119&highlight=user+agent . Good luck. I uninstalled AB today.

I used to love Avant, but it's gone in a terrible direction since version 10.

It has many problems now, but one thing I really dislike is the browser User Agent ID issue. "Avant" is left in the UA string after uninstalling...so even if you use IE or Maxthon etc., your browser is still identified as being Avant. That's shoddy coding at best, deceitful at worst.

Maxthon, Opera and IE7 are all better choices.

Avant doesn't get in the way of itself, and doesn't require a big learning curve or time sink for users. It reminds me of the XYplorer File Manager — lean and focused on doing what it supposed to do rather than just adding bloat. You can see that on what gets updated, too.

Dear Warped:

The reason Avant's Web Rendering ability is better than any other browser (assuming IE7 is installed) is because it renders using whatever version of IE that is installed on the computer ... and since virtually every professional web designer in the entire world uses IE standards in their design, all other standards that may have been proposed or even accepted by some dubious organization, simply do not apply. Why do users of Firefly, for example, have to occasionally use an extension to properly render webpages when Firefly will not?

I can install this on someone else's computer — you know, like the wife, grandpa, or other idiot relative — and customize its settings in about a minute, and BAM! it's as good or better than just about everything else out there. If you need an advanced browser with tons and tons of options, I'd recommend Maxthon, but for anyone else, Avant is easy, simple, customizable, fast, and it handles downloads as well as Opera.

Avant is a great browser and Anderson is doing a great job, but there is a minor problem that has me concerned, thus my rating the browser a 4.

Whenever I open Avant (now in version 11.0 RC 7a), it sets itself as the default browser. While I really like the broswer, it is still in beta, and I do not wish to make a beta browser my default browser. I have written directly to Anderson about this, but the problem remains.

Now for you guys and gals who want to use Avant as your default browser while it is still in beta, this is no problem, but it is for me.

The Avant 11 RC's are a fairly significant step away from Avant 10, and the UI changes are going to alienate some people. That said, I think the power users in the audience are going to like this a lot.

I haven't run into any bugs or incompatibilities so far. Some allowed pop-ups are still slightly undersized, but they're all resizable, so there you go. It made itself the default browser for me as well, and I had to tell Firefox that it was still the boss twice before it stuck, but it did stick.

It's a good all-around alternative to Firefox, and ver. 11 is a solid step towards replacing it for good.

I was a big fan of Avant 10 (except for the dual-core problems and the memory leaks) but I'm very disappointed with the latest changes in Avant 11. It now uses prorietary bookmarks wich are no longer interchangeable with the ones from IE. Also the bookmarks are encrypted and can't be editet. The biggest loss is that all the Favorites which have been updated with custom favicons are lost. No custom favicons in Avant 11!

I have used Avant browser for years. As others have said the issue of this being a beta is a red herring ... it's never been amything else. It has not previously reset the home page with every release

My home page was substituted with Yahoo search and my search toolbar default was changed from Google to Yahoo - no permission sought, nor notice given.

Permission was requetd by the installation to make Avant default browser ... I selected no but it made itself default anyway, and sets itself as default every time it's opened.

I admire Coover's generosity of spirit if she/he believes that this isn't sll a cheap and illegitimate attempot to deliver users to Yahoo.

Hi, Mr. Space.

No, I'm not blind and my glasses are relatively new. But thanks for asking.

This product is always a beta. But that's not the point.

I've been using this program for years and this new update does not have the functionality of earlier versions. Typically updates involve enhancements, not downgrades.

I'm still hoping though, that the annoyances will be fixed and I can upgrade my ol' faithful ver. 10.2 b52.

To try to be fair, this time I'm giving it a rating of 3 because I'm mostly writing because Mr. Space decided to rate me instead of the product.

Are you BLIND? This is a BETA version.

But better solutions is have another browser like OPERA 9.01 or Firefox, instead IE clone

coover

coover reviewed v11.0 Beta 9 on Aug 9, 2006

Now in Beta 10, this browser remains the best IE clone. But please note, it is still in Beta. If you attempt an upgrade from version 10, you will lose any configuration you have done. Thus, you will lose toolbar placement, you will lose your "Home Page", or as in my case, my "Home Pages". This beta version does not "Hijack" your home page, it simply doesn't know of your previous home page, and gives you a new one. But once you reset your home page or pages, it won't forget what they are, and all future version 11 browsers will use your settings.

You've got to remember, guys and gals, that this is a BETA version, and some things will work and others won't. So don't get down on the hard working author of this software. Beta versions are allowed to be placed on your computer because the author knows there are problems and hopes that you, the user will find the problems and report them to him, so he can repair them, So if you have a problem with this browser, tell Anderson. The b****ing is not necessary, nor is it constructive.

You can report the problems in the Avant
Forum which you can find under the Avant "Help" button.

I have always liked AB and always highly recommeded it. But, the past few updates and now this beta has left a bad taste in my mouth.

As stated below, it reset my home page to the Avant/Yahoo search.

Also the article states "The built-in Google search engine..." which is not true. you will get the avant branded yahoo. You can change this but it is no longer a drop down selection in search options. You have to manually enter the search sites url.

The setup also reset most of my options and buttons.

Lastly I do not like the fact that they now built in the password manager. I would have prefered they left it as an add-on.

This is looking more like adware for Yahoo than the browser I was using.

Avant Browser is just great! Based on Internet Explorer. Avant simply uses the very best from I.E., then adding more options to make it fit your needs - what ever they are! It is so versatile and has a lot of fine-tuning options to make it work the way you want. I like the mouse-gestures - saves many clicks opening, closing, update, hide etc. by only moving mouse in specific directions.
The pop-up blocker, and ad-blocker is very effective, with learning function. Cleaning ops like history, coockies, search, temps, logs one by one - or all at ones - or automaticly when closing browser. Integrated translators. Many skins included with nice colours and XP-style icons makes good overview.
Avant is user-friendy and effective specially with google/yahoo search along with the standard search from I.E.
It's my most appreciated software, the very first I install after OS install.
It's free, yet this program I would pay for!
The producer deserves a donation for this program, and a big -THANK YOU- for making Avant avaliable for the people, for free!!!

Okay, I've just spent a couple of hours looking at this and the verdict is "Nice try..". Still lots of room for improvement. The most annoying thing in this beta is, as someone else mentioned, if you set the window tabs to be at the top of the screen, then go into options and change ANYTHING, when you OK out of options, the entire group of toolbars refreshes and the window tabs toolbar goes back down to the bottom - regardless of whether you've locked them all in place or not. Compared this to Maxthon, Avant (10.5), Greenbrowser and MyIE: Maxthon still reigns supreme, but that goes for it's memory usage as well. Avant's okay, but I'd still say the most annoying thing about it is that they STILL haven't fixed the automatic resizing of window tabs. Maxthon, GB and MyIE can resize them so you can theoretically have 20 tabs in one line if you configured it that way. Fixed tab size SUCKS. For my vote, MyIE (www.morequick.com) is the fastest browser and uses the least memory. If you don't care about memory usage or speed then Maxthon is definitely king, hands down. Oh yeah - and Firefox is crap, always has been.

The tab bar for Avant Browser 10.2 Build 51 is still woefully broken and the problems unaddressed/ignored, rendering Avant unusable (unless you don't use more than 14 tabs, and don't mind decreased screen realestate and cheezy looking dotted lines). Avant used to be a near perfect browser, and until the problems are fixed, I'll have to use an alternative.

There are those at the Avant forums that think the new style tab bar is terrific. However, color me skeptical they've ever used any other browser besides Internet Explorer.

I have a powerful PC at home, and I use Firefox pretty much exclusively on it. At work, however, I'm stuck with a low-end machine, and Avant is absolutely the best solution in that environment (very high bandwidth, very low system specs). It has nearly all the features a power user needs, even with limited resources to draw from.

And best of all, Avant is updated more frequently than any browser on earth. Five out of five, easily.

It is tough to argue against the impressive merits of this browser. As much as I like Opera, it is no where near as complete as Avant and still does not render some pages as well as it should. Sure, Opera may be more secure but the user should take responsibility for securing their machines and not depend on a web browser to do it for them.

*EDIT #1* 03/23/06

There is a very serious problem with this build and 28 as well. The "Apply" button eventually fails to save changes made to any of the options under: Tools->Avant Browser Options...

*EDIT #2* 03/23/06

Okay, the above problem is caused by Webroot Spysweeper's IE Hijack shield being activated. Disabled, the "Apply" button in Avant works as intended. My score for this browser returns to a 4.

Anyone else seeing this? The browser is otherwise near perfect without that very annoying issue.

This is a fine browser. The speed is top-notch with plenty of features to boot. One of its annoyances, though small, is that the drop down menus close on any of the menu bar buttons when any of the options are selected/deselected. Speaking of the menu buttons, they could be better placed with some visual effects so they stand out more. Also, enabling the Links bar takes up too much space for my liking, since there is already 3 tiers of bars without it.

In all, this browser is a vast improvement over the archaic Internet Explorer.

Why You think Maxthon or Avant popularity will go down ? Maxthon already supports IE7 and i think Avant too (yet i not tested this) ... in fact most of IE6 based browsers can't wait till IE7 is out because of extended support and new features they can offer ... Saying it will drop numbers is exactly opposite to what will really happen.

I agree with Aires, once IE 7 comes out these IE shells will go down by popularity a bit. I assume most people only use Maxthon or Avant because of tabbed browsing, there once IE 7 comes with such a feature most people will just go back to IE instead of Maxthon or Avant. Nevertheless let’s review Avant; good browser, fast and stable. However I think Maxthon is better out of the two but not by much. It just seems that Maxthon has a larger following and it will take Avant to come up with something special in the future if they wish to catch up, especially if Maxthon 2.0 is coming out soon with a whole new re-written code from scratch.

Just another opportunity to give a rating of 5 to the best IE based browser.

And with the release of Firefox 1.5, Avant is just that much better. Firefox seems to be getting worse as v. 1.5 has a huge (and I mean really, really big) memory leak. Use it for 30 minutes and it will take most, if not all, of your CPU power.

Don't like IE based? Take a look at the new "Orca" Browser by the author of Avant. It, too, is excellent.

Aires

Aires reviewed v10.1 Build 38 on Dec 25, 2005

Well let's be honest I did say this is quite a good browser shell for what it's worth. But MS getting IE7 right doesn't mean it needs to be perfect and 95% there or there abouts will be good enough for most people. Avant Browser isn't a perfect browser shell either but if IE7 comes close enough to Avant, Opera & Firefox - that'll be good enough for most people, who let's face it use IE6 now anyway. If you use another browser you'll be bound to stick with it, but if IE7's usability is good enough - I'll use it. MS are not going to introduce IE7 and then sit on their hands as they have done in the past, because Firefox predominantly is providing too much competition. I see less and less need for Maxathon and Avant and Crazy Browser et al, the longer that IE7 development continues. Once the standard of IE7 has been brought up to compete with the browser shells, there won't be any need for them and only die hard fans will continue to use them - simple as.

ModderXManiac

ModderXManiac reviewed v10.1 Build 38 on Dec 25, 2005

Quite simply, M$ is not capable of making the "perfect" browser, and there is always room for improvement upon it. Especially the failed pop-up blocker with IE6 on SP2, there's bound to be plenty of flaws with IE7.

Avant in damned near perfect.

My only complaint is that it sometimes "rewinds" to the first page visited in a particular tab. It seems to randomly happen when my right mouse button is pressed, but I can't reproduce it on demand. I've disabled the mouse gestures and all, so I'm not really sure why it does the rewind thing.

Avant is the only browser that I've experienced with this issue. I've never seen it with IE, Maxthon, Mozilla, Opera, Slimbrowser or Firefox.

My only guess is that Avant somehow conflicts with StrokeIt, which I also use on my computers.

That's a shame because otherwise I'd use Avant instead of Maxthon and never look back.

4 and 3/4 stars.

Was it only the beta or the standard edition?

Side-note. The Dr. Orca browser has exactly the same feel and speed as Avant. It did act a bit weird, so I'm looking for it being reviewed here. If I ever switch it will be to Dr. Orca. Question that will show my "in learning mode" level. Correct me if necessary but am I right that "Gecko based browser" means it is entirely IE engine independent? If so, maybe I will finally see some "reviewers" stop complaining about Avant being based on the IE engine. When I'm testing a browser I just don't care on what engine it is based on. It's simply THE BEST FREE BROWSER OUT THERE!!!.
I've been using Avant Browser for the last 2 years, every day, and I LOVE IT.

YES, it DOES have the Internet Explorer engine, but that's exactly why AB is so great, because it's 100% compatible with ALL websites. (Firefox is NOT)
Example: Microsoft Exchange Server Webmail looks very bad in Firefox, with folders at the top, no support for drag & drop, etc. Avant Browser works perfect.

SECURITY/SPYWARE: I LOVE AB's 'add block' feature, as well as flash blocker, as sometimes I just want to read the news without all that junk.

I NEVER , and I mean NEVER got any spyware in the last 2 years using Avant Browser. I have Microsoft Antispyware installed, I dont' run Kazaa and stuff like that, and I don't visit Porn and Crack sites. I also don't install any software before I read online user reviews about it and make sure it's 'clean'. Staying 'clean' is easier than you think! (If I have to do some reasearch on 'shady' websites, I just disable ActiveX, Images, Flash, pop-ups, and Ads, and there's basically no way I can 'catch anything'.

Way to go Avant Browser, and THANK YOU! for making my life MUCH easier for the last 3 years.

i'm an independent user, and have been, I just hate seeing people bashing perfectly good software for subjective reasons like "i just like Firefox better" that's retarted - It's either of use to you or not, you can't judge a tool by it's color.

I really can't see this product being able to use the new IE7 code and make a better browser. So once IE7 is released this product is dead.

Also, it's hard to predict how the war between Firefox and IE7 will go. I'll probably stay with IE7 unless Firefox offers something that I can't get with IE7. Assuming security is equal of course.

wow. there have been many improvements since the last time I tried AB. It has narrowed the gap significantly between it and Maxthon imo. The only thing missing that I noticed in the few minutes of driving it and going through the settings is plugin support. Maxthon can handle some 3rd party plugins, which is nice. I'd say the two browsers are neck and neck now.
(update - http://www.movietickets.com/ doesn't crash for me XP/SP2)

Like realy isn't that kinda childish, Everyone knows that nothing is perfect, so I guess that means that Firefox isn't perfect.

Great browser after some easy mods. It's plenty fast, though maybe a bit behind Firefox. I LOVE the flash ad blocker! I couldn't even see them on this page! That is why my notebook is getting this version of Avant instead of Firefox. Now if only someone would make a browser with image compression built in that would be even better.

ModderXManiac

ModderXManiac reviewed v10.1 Build 16 on Jul 16, 2005

The flash ad stopper is a nice touch...The tabs and the interface are....strange...I hate the submenu's. Too many buttons, just too cluttered to be a friendly interface for anyone, IMO.

I think that Maxthon handles much better than this does. Given its web-blocker, saves my bandwidth(Which is important on satellite) a cleaner tabs system with much more control.

I just prefer Maxthon, this could use some work.

bobad

bobad reviewed v10.1 Build 16 on Jul 16, 2005

Avant browser is nice, but doesn't handle groups nearly as well as Maxthon. You can not click directly on a group; you must select a submenu. The real deal killer is that when opening a new group, the old group does not automatically close. That completely ruins the entire groups concept. Why would I want my "Software" group and my "News" group up at the same time? And what is that page full of shopping links that pops up on a bad URL? For all the FireFox fanboys: Even with the aforementioned flaws, Avant still beats FireFox by a mile at speed, features, and functionality.

Hi! I decided to join because of the review from And|. I have to confess that the Atari Gem was far more stable than Windows! Now how's that for reviewing? :P

I've been using Avant for a long time now. I love its ease of use and its flexibility when it comes to playing with the bars and buttons. I can't say enough of how consistent the maker of this browser has been on alway making the next version even better than the previous one. The tab system it uses is second to none. I've had tons of windows opened and it ran as smoothly as when it had only one window open. I've used this browser in Win98, WinMe, and now, Win2000. I've also installed it on a friend's laptop running WinXpee Pro. In all cases, stable as a rock! Never acting like Netscape Bloatware dragging my computer to snail speed.

The two times I had problems were because of icons buttons vanishing under the mouse.:P It was because of my video card. Using any other video card I had never brought up that problem. So, I see this more as a hardware problem than a software conflict.(?) The second time was while trying a beta.:P But that got resolved as soon as the final came out. I could give it a 4, because of a few nitpicking problems&no software is perfect!) but I will give it a FIVE simply because of it surviving all the stupid and irrelevant bashing it has received.

Haha BungHole...no joke...

I'm with ya.

Avant is a great IE Front End.
There are so many front ends to choose from though...Maxthon, GreenBrowser, Avant, E2 Browser, CrazyBrowser, DeepNet Explorer, AOL Explorer.

For the most part all of the afore mentioned browsers (except E2 and AOL) attempt the mimic the Internet Explorer look and then add some more onto it. They all do it well...

For the most part all of these browsers give you the same nice little tools...
Page zooming, mouse gestures, RSS feed support, form filler, popup blocker, ad filtering, some extra crap on the status bar, skining, multilanguage support, and URL Aliasing to name a few.
They all do it the same...they all give you toolbar and status bar customization to the nth degree.
They all have advanced cache cleaning...meaning you can choose specifically what footprints to clear...just cookies, just cache, just the search history, just the IE history, etc.

Avant stands out in a few places...
It has options to set specifically what you want Avant to handle. If you only want Avant to handle .htm files, and let everything else goto IE (meaning when you double click an HTM file it will open in Avant), you can do that. All the other front ends either let you set the browser as the default for everything or nothing.
Right click context menu editing...really nice feature here.
The right click context menu when right clicking tabs is really nice too.

And best of all, when dragging toolbars, or columns, or whatever, Avant doesnt follow the mundane means of Intenet Explorer...as in you cant see the contents while dragging. So for example, have you ever tried moving the toolbars in IE around? You notice that as you move it, it just jumps around from toolbar to toolbar until you settle on a final position. Avant goes one step further and makes it like iTunes music dragging...you see a transparent copy the toolbar as you drag it, making it very easy to drop it where you want. Its a great feature.

Dont listen to those firefox dopes.
You will find a hundred articles out there that say IE is in fact more secure than FF.
Its pretty dumb that these two or so new security vulnerabilities are getting so much news when they have been there forever...its like a Security vulnerability in firefox gets a 1 second blip in everyones life while the IE ones get blown out of proportaion.
Just get zone alarm's free firewall version, get spywareblaster, get microsoft antispyware, and get bitdefender antivirus free version (assuming you dont want to pay for one), and just browse smart.
Besides...with every new version of these IE frontends that come out comes an improved anti-phising tool (something of which Avant comes with...though i HIGHLY recommend the one that DeepNet Explorer has). That will protect you well enough.

The key is just to be smart on the web...
FireFox isnt necessarily the answer anyway...

bunghole

bunghole reviewed v10.1 Beta 9 on Jun 28, 2005

I'm not sure which beta of Avant disabled skins since I've been using Maxthon with a bit of Opera for a while. Anyway I gave this beta a go and its now definitely faster the aforementioned two (and Firefox of course). Good job, Anderson.

Also, anyone writing about IE's so-called security holes can suck it. I havent had any spyware/viruses in years. Not that anyone would want my info, or yours for that matter...

Firefox zealots are like the AIDS doomsayers of the 80's. They use unrealistic fear to affect a desired outcome. Ignore them, use common sense, and you won't get into trouble.

Not true!

Opera has zero unpatched vulnerabilities: http://secunia.com/product/4932/

Firefox has 6 unpatched issues: http://secunia.com/product/4227/

I have ranked this browser 5 stars in the past but some useful features are really missing which I doubt they will ever get implemented. The new features that are being added, I don't find them useful at all but this is just me. Powerful things such as Super Drag and Drop are not properly implemented, "Add to Favorites" on top of each Favorite folder is missing, there isn't a proper "Undo Last Closed Tab" button, instead you have "History" which when you press it, a big menu that spreads over three/four rows on the screen (depending on your resolution). It pops up covering almost all of the screen if you use low resolution. These features are a must have (my preference) and without them, I can’t use this browser. That’s why I will stick with Maxthon for the time being (as I have always have).

On the positive side, the browser loads up super fast, faster then Maxthon, looks good, very good tab management, and a very good Favorites management. You can right click and drag/drop Favorites from the menu bar itself, just like IE or the Windows Start/Programs menu.. I find this very useful. Good popup blocker, you can zoom in/out into web pages etc.

Worthless cultspeak about spyware and viruses add nothing to a review of Avant; they only show the ignorance of the writer and the extent to which they're able to parrot the latest Lunix FUD.

If they truly believed that IE was so inherently insecure, they wouldn't actually try a shell based on IE. They've likely never even downloaded Avant to see how it performs. Therefore their only reason for adding a comment is to promote Firefox. Such comments should be automatically disregarded.

Having said all that, Avant continues to work flawlessly for me. Keep up the good work.

I would never go back to IE but I will use Firefox for that reason. This has been discussed on the Forums but never resolved.

I don't know why everybody say that other alternative browsers are better. Have you ever run them on a Pentium 233 MMX with 64MB and XPSP2? I don't think so! Then you will take this or Maxthon, cause the speed and memory consume rules in this case.
Used Maxthon for a long time too to say is good, but for me is Avant better and it's cool that is final, finally ;).
If anybody knows a better "light weight" browser then tell me.

alexrhcosta: not really an idiot.tried win98se and xpsp2 (maybe will switch to xpsp1-hate the built-in firewall) runs more stable and faster for my server. It's useless to explain to you when your mom spend money for you.

Just not as polished as Maxthon.

Maxthon also has a bunch of plugin's for added features.

Truthfully wish Maxthon and Avant would join forces. It's a waste to create two browsers based on the IE shell that are almost twins.

What is all of this whining about "too many beta releases" and "not a good browser because its based on IE" nonsense? Maybe more people would download Firefox if there weren't so many elitist attitudes in that community of users. Internet Explorer has flaws, but they are fixed regularly, and believe it or not, some people actually NEED, not LIKE, the ability to use ActiveX without trying to find a million plugins.

But this review is not about Internet Explorer, its about Avant Browser, which functions as a shell for IE. It provides easy access to everything, and includes ad-blocking, popup blocks, on/off switches for Java/Flash/Video/Sounds/Scripts etc. This is a great value especially if you do not want to be stuck downloading Firefox on a Windows machine.

Thank you Avant Browser.

To anybody complaining about having to download all these new beta releases. STOP DOING IT! Nobody said you had to come to "BetaNews" to download beta software. If you only want stable releases then go directly to avantbrowser.com and download Latest Release: Avant Browser 10.0 Build 035, 11.22.2004 which is clearly posted on the main page. This is a beta testing community so it wouldnt really make much sense for the 1 person developing this software to go ahead and waste time putting together another smaller group to perform a task that this site was created to accomplish.

Carlospr reviewed v10.0.114 Beta on Jan 31, 2005

I'm not sure what kind of review is the best.

Some users make a bad review just because it's not freeware or don't have a nice installer. I saw an user give one just because he was not to able to download a freeware, but bandwidth costs money... A freeware turns a shareware... And some user will probably give one not because he can't download, but because it's shareware now...

I think we have to also review the software itself, even if we don't use it or don't need it in any way or don't want to pay for.

AvantBrowser is an IE interface and for what it is, AvantBrowser is great. It has lots of features and functionalities that IE doesn't have.

I hope all users could focus their skills in the software itself too.

There is a perfectly good reason to use this. If Microsoft were smart they'd buy Avant. incorporate its innovations, and release it as IE7.

From Monday, August 30, 2004

A word about the Wired article. I didn't "reveal" that I run Firefox. The interview itself was a 45 minute long affair from which they distilled four questions and answered them with paraphrases from my answers to the questions during the total interview. That's how their hot seat interviews are done.

What I stated in regards to Firefox is that as a security professional I keep abreast of a variety of products on test machines and that just that morning I had to install an update on the machine running Firefox, which was true (EDIT: The update I applied was specifically to Firefox, I merely point out that it was not on my primary machine). That got distilled down to just the last part, that I had to update Firefox to apply a critical security fix.

And I didn't say Windows would finally be secure in 2011. When asked about our efforts I pointed out that security is a journey not a destination, and that our trustworthy computing initiative was a 10 year one.

Lest anyone be confused, my primary browser is SP2 Internet Explorer using Maxthon .

I have used this browser and find it to be very fast and efficient as well. Previous versions were good also, and I cant recall finding any bugs in them. One thing I can recommend if you use Windows XP, and do not have service pack 2, is that you remove the Java Virtual Machine from windows. Then install the Sun , Java Runtime enviornment . If you wish to learn how to take out the Java from XP just do a search on Google for " remove Java virtual machine" and it will give you the page. That will solve a lot of the IE problems. If you have XP service pack 2 you wont need to do it.
Anyhow overall I rated this file a 4, I think its very good. If you want one thats even better try Opera 7.54 its faster and offers tons of nice user friendly features.

I would tend to agree with the previous post about Mozilla. However, of the browsers mentioned, this is the best adaptation of the IE spinoffs yet. I can't use Mozilla, alas it STILL does not support certain Program Functions like IE does, and since Avant Browser is the best of IE clones, I would say Avant Browser has the best chance to succeed. I have tried Opera, Netcaptor, Firefox.. I dropped them all, and keeping Avant Browser. Two big things I like. You can remove file menu items like help.. who needs help once you have used it? And this browser doesn't require that you use a scroll bar to see the tabs. I prefer to keep IE for ActiveX compatibility, therefore my vote is for Avant Browser. And another post said something about "beta of the week...". Well, 2 schools of thought on that.. would you rater wait until next years model to see the changes? OR interact with the programmer now to see the changes, and have a chance to use them/make suggestions? Myself.. I would be here. This is BETANEWS last time I checked.. I like to see the new stuff WHEN its available, not when its released. Besides, EVERY program has a new update.. weekly. I don't trust programs that don't have something in works all the time.. complacency is not good for applications. Some companies don't let you see what they are working on.. why not? They must have something to hide. . . . . .

Maxthon 1.0.0250 is final now and works great. It doesn't crash at all and the bugs have been crushed, so I switched from MyIE2 to Maxthon.

Avant is still trying to keep up. It's fast and lightweight but doesn't have the super drag and drop feature and the mouse gestures are pretty bad compared with how well they work in Maxthon.

I really like Avant Browser. It has a lot of power but is still nice and simple. I don't want or need RoboForm and all that stuff so I just use the browser as is. It works fine however what puts me off is the IE engine. I would like to use a version of Avant that used Gecko. Until then I will be using Firefox.

Avant IS better than Firefox, but the engine is not. There is a big difference!

Still beta, of course, there are still bugs: skin doesnot work, when I install this 10.0 beta 006, it doesnot remember my former settings (and I have to configure the Options again).
However, there are a lot of new things which are very useful. I'm waiting for the offical version.

Didn't see anything about 10.0 b6 on the site, but 10.0 b5 has this for changelog:

Here is some features I finished for 10.0:

XML RSS/ATOM Feeds Reader
Auto-hide left side bar in full screen/desktop mode.
Floating Bar for selected Text (Copy, Search, Find, Highlight...)
Floating Bar for Flash Movie (Save, Play in Player, emailing, Block...)
Floating Bar for Image (Save, View in Viewer, Zoom in/out, emailing).
Send the page...
Page Zooming
Privacy Report...
Fixed Web Page Printing Bug
Improved Memory Usage, it's faster with large number of windows opened.

There are several feeds will be installed to your favorites folder, for testing purpose. If you know any excellent feed that would be great to be package by installer, please let me know.

Floating Bar will be shown if you move your mouse over "Selected Text", "Pictures", and "Flash Movies". And disappear after 2 seconds if you don't use it.

There will be some other features added in the following beta.

Thanks,

Anderson

For an IE wrapper, this is the best one that I have found to date. For those sites that insist on viewing with IE, this is what I prefer.

I am a little confused to the changes that led to a full release - all I can see are newsfeeds. I did notice my google bar is no longer working.

Anderson, A list of changes would be much appreciated.

Still rates a '5' from me though.

I enjoy using Avant. I have had it since version 8, it has only gotten better. I did not like the fact that the upgrade was not smooth like all of the ealier versions. It aphabetized my favorites after the upgrade, I had them already arraged the way I wanted. Changed my tool bar layout, form my customization. It has a new tool bar 'XML', not really sure how to use it, but could be a great tool. All in all, very good 'skin' for IE engine.

It's an awesome extension to the IE rendering engine, which is the only reason I replaced IE with it - it's now my "microsoft site only" browser.

If it ran the mozilla rendering engine, it'd replace everything full time... it's a great piece of software, unfortunately it sits on a weak, very buggy rendering engine, which makes it 2nd best

I have to agree with Sirhardi, this release and prior - back ot build 012, freezes IE. I have to end the IE process, restart and then all set. Seems that if too many "tab windows opened" with a small cache limit, is an issue. Otherwise a very program. Rating it a three since this new build has an issue that the previous release didn't.

sirhardi

sirhardi reviewed v9.02 Build 021 on Apr 24, 2004

Dont know what it is , and how to describe the re occuring crashes now in this release 021, seems like somehow related to the amount of IE Temp files, once full and i have no idea what the limit is within Avanty as in IE it wont happen, the browser just stops responding, ceases to render pages..
I am hoping it will be fixed soon, I also would like to know , why kerio at times tells me that the app has changed.............if this is re occuring, I am also utilizing my other browsers more.

I love AvantBrowser. I give the older versions a 5, without hesitation. However, this new one has a SERIOUS issue. They decided to add a "Sitefinder" type thing to replace DNS errors.

So if a page gets one single DNS error (even an image that is linked wrong) BAM, you get to see the www.avantfinder.com site.

Because of this, I am still running 012.

RedBadger

RedBadger reviewed v9.01 Build 121 on Mar 29, 2004

I would give it a 5 except it locks up a lot when I try to play (click on) quicktime videos. MyIE2 does not have this problem. However MyIE2 does not open new resized windows correctly, so I guess I can't win either way.

The popup blocker is excellent in Avant and that reason alone makes it worth using over the standard IE browser.

debonair

debonair reviewed v9.01 Build 120 on Mar 25, 2004

great to use inplace of IE, but opera is still my first choice. UNfortionatly, because avant is using the API of IE, it inherits IE's problems as well...the slowness, and all the other annoying crap. It's good that it finally got mouse gestures, however, I couldn't get them to work (how hard should it be?). I'm still going to give it a 3 for this particular release, since mouse gestures was the big thing. Otherwise the browser would have gotten a 4 from me.

I like Avant Browser, its cosmetically good looking, and I like the tabbed windows, I feel for power users who surf multiple sites as I do it the way to go. The only problem I had so far is that Avant associates itself as your primary browser, so if you click on something from inside another program Avant opens up instead of IE. This isnt bad but Avant is slow to open compared to others such as Green Browser. However its never crashed or locked up on me, nor has it malfunctioned in any other way that I am aware of so I gave it 4 stars. It has a lot of nice features.

Not a bad piece of software. But I don't think it will be replacing Firefox for me any time soon.

Pros:
- Tabbed browsing, always a good thing.
- Uses the IE engine. Some sites still don't work 100% correctly with the Gecko engine. Plus RoboForm is really slow with Mozilla browsers (at least on my computer), on IE-based browsers it's quick.
- Buttons to enable/disable flash or images with a single click. Quite handy.

Cons:
- Uses the IE engine. Loading sites just feels slower and clunkier. Not always standards compliant which can screw some things up.
- Doesn't really offer anything over my current browser (Firefox).

I give it 3 out of 5.

The interface is clean and easy to navigate. The only issues I have are cosmetic and is a personal opinion and does not detract from the ability of the app to do what it claims. I've been using Avant for a loooong time and love it. Over time it grows on you. The multiple tabs are nice the way tabs can be opened and closed is interesting but for me the best feature is that when you close the browser and reopen it it brings back all the pages you were on.

Nice product.

i've been using Avant Browser since before it was called "Avant Browser", before it I used many other IE front-ends such as Netcaptor, MYIE, MYIE2, CrazyBrowser and many others. None of them really appealed to me outside of the fact that they had tabbed interfaces. None could drag me away from Opera and Mozilla (Firebird is great too) until i found Avant Browser...it had all the features i liked about Opera, and it supported all those "nonstandard" sites that Opera and Mozilla do not, so it won me over. i have been using it as my main browser on both my work and home PC's for a very long time now. It's updated regularly and i have had little to no problems or "bugs" in the extensive time that i have been using it...and believe me when i say i am a power user. Years back I even helped a friend by making icons for a tabbed browser he did called Scope, the thing i loved about it was that it could render pages using both the IE and Mozilla engines and you could view them side by side. I would love to see that in Avant Browser, then Avant Browser would be really stiff competition.

I recently tryed this out for a few days. For the most part, this is an awsome browsing tool...easily setup, totally configurable. The only issue I saw, however, was it seemed to use alot of CPU %... at first, it would be minimal, but after 30-45min this would increase to around 12% CPU usage, and 30mb RAM... this seems a bit high to me for a broswer, this is based on having approx 5-6 windows opened, and none of them have anything major in them, like flash running. Now, I know my system is outdates, P2/450/448mb RAM, however, I also know, that nothing else I run uses this much. Even Winamp5 doesnt use CPU/RAM close to that. So I am wondering is there something running in the background of this proggy to cause such a mem leak? Anyone else seen this? thanks

This feature I have got used to & now is a must for me.

The only problem with it that I have found is high CPU usage on pages with animation.

NetCaptor has Aliases that can be defined such I can enter something like 's.' (no quotes) into the Address bar and NetCaptor knows to go to http://slashdot.org

It also has a QuickSearch feature that let's you define a search engine and search terms so you can enter 'g Foo' into the Address bar and NetCaptor knows to run a Google search. You can create a QuickSearch for any URL that shows you the variable in the URL.

For all of the look-alike, NetCaptor programs that are around, I wonder why no one has incorporated those features.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, "Crazy Browser" just uses the IE engine as well, so there is no way it can render/load pages faster, unless it has some kind of spider go through the pages' links and cache all the links... which imho is a waste of bandwidth and HD space.

OK, I have used Avant Browser for a couple of weeks now and I like it a lot. It has quite a few more features than Crazy Browser and despite some very few drawbacks, on the whole it is quite a good browser. However, it just doesn't load webpages as quick as Crazy Browser and for me, that's it's problem. I have a DSL/broadband connection and pages load more speedy with Crazy Browser, than any other browser I've used before. So with great reluctance, until Avant loads webpages a lot faster, I now have to return to Crazy Browser - that's the bottom line.

This is a good browser - better than IE. In addition to the the multi-window browsing, it has some nice mouse gestures, plenty of keyboard short cuts and a nice "One level up" function. However, it doesn't order my favourites correct - annoying. (If I select "Organize ..." I get the correct order that is used in IE.) I also use MyIE2 - http://www.ruihehang.com/myie2/html_en/home.htm - which is *very* similiar to Avant. It handles the favourites better and has a nice open closed windows function. I think Avant and MyIE2 should merged... I don't use the pop-up killer on any of these browsers since I use Proxomitron - http://www.proxomitron.org/ - which is far superior.

I was on a quest for a broswer that supported tabs. I downloaded all of the well known ones out there and this one was simply the best. It is really IE with a face lift, it actually usess IE for the core - that advatange is that it's fast and stable. My favorite features are the Tabs but many peopel forget the groups. The groups allow you to setup custome favorite groups. So when click on, you can open all the web pages at onece. Very handy with your daily web pages you always open up. It uses Google for it's search engine (although I wish it supported the google toolbar). This is a must have replacement broswer. Once you get use to tabs and groups, you can't go back.

This is the best skin/enhancement for IE. I've tried many other similar browsers such as MyIE2, NeoPlanet, and Netcaptor, but none of them are as good as Avant Browser. I always end up going back to the original IE browser after trying out the other browsers. But Avant browser is a keeper. I like it because it looks almost identical to IE, only it has the tabs and has smarter features. The mouse button functions are outstanding. The builtin ad popup blocker is very good, plus its easy to toggle it on and off. Plus it remembers which sites you were looking at before it crashes, so when you restart, it opens those sites up. Good job Anderson, keep up the good work. :-)

If you like Internet Explorer options but are sick of I.E. Instability , Avant Browser is your only smart choice. It also updates usualy at least once a week.(Tip)Always click on help on top tool bar & then click "check for update". That a feature all browsers and thus all software should have.
You need to ask yourself-"Can I be without Avant Browser"?
Anderson Che is on the ball. Also Avantbrowser.com also has a discussion group and Anderson Che listens to what you have to say.He responded to my request in under 6 hours.
Avant does not deserve the low rating this site has given it.

A great front end with the IE engine behind it. Mozilla is nice, but I've always liked the IE engine better (it can render anything) and this adds the tabbed-browsing feature that IE lacked along with popup blockers and other such things. Furthermore you can minimize, resize, etc the windows inside Avant, something Crazy Browser lacks. Awesome program.

My opinion why i like avantbrowser more than other browser:

Easy accessable popupblocker (just one click away)
Nice XP Style.
Best support ever!!!
frequently updates!
It's damn fast!
It wont open new instances with popup windows (like in phoenix or mozilla)

btw i've never seen an uglier Homepage than the one from mozilla.org! Hard to find what im looking for!

Ok, netcapter might be good I guess...but it is not free and I don't particuarly care for it. MYIE is good as well and also free and very customizable. My favorite is CrazyBrowser though, I absolutley love it. This program "Avant Browser" is great as well and free, it is also the only one that I have used that feels like a true MDI program because the tabbed windows can be the actuall size the webmaster intened (on sites that use pop ups...even though I hate those f**king kinds of sites) or you can maximze the tabbed window to occupy the entire space within the browser (I might not have explined the very well but look at the screen shot to better understand what I am trying to say. The only problems I have with Avant browser is that it lacks user customization and dosen't remeber it's last position on screen when you start it back up (a minor annoyance but an annoyance nonetheless). A final note, I like to read educated reviews, it irritates the hell out of me to read reviews in which the reviewer hasn't even used the program so please at least use it before blindly recommending something else! That is all...

As far as this broswer goes, it is the first broswer ever to permanently pull me away from IE. Understandably, it does use the IE engine, however, the GUI is much more user oriented and provides just the right options without over cluttering the screen.

Nice looking, but if you are looking for something similar to opera this aint it. Though slightly more confuzing, MyIE is more configurable.

Because it uses IE's engine, this is just an interface change, with extra features. Bottom line, this is like using IE6 with Office XP's interface (very nice and clean). It allows you to be at more then one website and switch between them fast and simple. This program is for people that want the power of IE6 with a little more control and options. You can't beat that. There is other programs that offer more, but this is simple enough for my mom to understand. I wish it auto reloaded web sites when I reopened it. Also have it abble to use the default mail client by default.
